Necessary? Nope.

Programmer? Nope.

I am a network administrator for a company and have a side consulting business. If I want something, I work more to buy it. I could have saved money but my 7800GTX are watercooled so it would be a pain to get rid of them. The thing I love the most are my monitors. Those Dell 24"s are great. I have a Westinghouse 37" downstairs on the wall but that was just TOO big for a computer monitor.

Then there's us depraved students, who can barely scrape together the pennies for another pint... I mean wholesome meal, let alone build a new PC. To think I haven't built a new rig since the socket-A days...

So this is my desk at UWA in the 10ft sqaure white box that is my home for 9 months of the year. Starting at the far right is Touya (see sig) who outputs to the 2x 15" Flatrons (darned nice monitors back in '03!). Above is Sakura (sig again - she's an old G-series Shuttle) who outputs to the 17" CRT because her main task is as a media machine. Continuing left is Tomoyo (again see sig) who atm is cloned onto the 15" CRT on the far left to make sure it's okay - it'd been gathering dust for probably 3 years. After I've been home for Xmas I'm bringing my Dreamcast over with me, & that's the permanent job of the 15". Other things to note... buckling spring AT keyboard (DIN connector) & old-fashioned big trackball (serial connector) on Touya, Tapwave Zodiac 2 sitting in it's cradle on top of Touya... Oh & the speakers are just cheapo Logitechs because the walls here are too thin to bring my Sony Bookshelf speakers (120Watts each with 6" kevlar woofers ain't great for the person next-door who doesn't appreciate Dir en Grey at 2am!).

daylight.jpg

And at night (how many people'll recognise Dawn - I was stress testing the tower after removing the broken NB fan by running a max heat prime95 torture test & temp monitors on the right panel & the Dawn Ultra demo on the left panel). All seemed happy after 6 hours solid!

And because I'm not paying the university 5p a page, a HP LaserJet 4 M Plus. Oh yes, I'm that hardcore.

Everything would be networked together with a Netgeat RT314, but the university runs 802.1x authentication for the halls off campus, & the old Netgear can't do that. I suppose I could make a gateway box at some point, if I can ever be bothered...

And before anybody says anything, yes I know everything is horrendously out of date, but I can't & won't be able to afford anything in the near future, what with being a penniless student & whatnot. If you want to help, my paypal ID is...

I happen to find your setup inspiring, it just shows that you don't! need to have 4*24" lcd and such.. good stuff ;)

Hell yes! I love your setup (kinda reminds me of mine). And I have the same printer. Works like a champ after all these years -and the toner is a hell of a lot cheaper than inkjets. The only problem is that the lights in the office seem to dim when I run it (probably needs its own circuit or something -then agian, the wiring is from the 50's). Don't knock them old machines man, they are some of my most reliable systems!

Amen. Though I wouldn't turn them down if someone offerred! Though that chances of that happenning are....

Kick-ass machine isn't it? In the first week of university, everyone ran around & bought silly little inkjets that have probably already broken or gone through 20 cartridges, not to mention cost them a fortune. I paid £32 for this printer, including delivery, JetDirect card & a toner cartrdige that's already done 600+ pages & shown no signs of fading! Bloody incredible machine, I love it.

My dad has one of those printers, it does work good.

Currently I only have a folding chair, the office one I had kept squeaking and was dropping grease on the carpet / my rug to cover up the grease on the carpet. So it had to go. The 37" westinghouse is here to stay though!

how is your westinghouse LCD?
i was skeptical.... with the brand name... how you like yours?

It's absolutely awesome if fed native resolution signals.. don't even try anything interlaced unless you want to be disappointed. PS2 looks absolutely horrible even over component, why the hell couldn't they have just de-interlaced it to 320x240 instead of trying to do it properly and failing so badly? Agh. It's also much harder to get the contrast right. Games that looked fine on my old viewsonic hdtv had me bumping up the ingame brightness to see any detail in dark areas. Also, you can see slight ghosting.. but you have to look very closely and very hard. Nothing you'd see at the monitor's normal viewing distance of 3+. The ghosting is almost as bad as a psp's screen on interlaced signals, it's poor.

I have a Flat tube projector.. PS3 is connected VIA HDMI........
no problems here... also connected it to a cple differnet LCDs with incredible resolutions and colors... Havnt seen it on a 1080P yet though... I have a really good feeling that i would never be able to tell the difference.. :D
Yay to PS3...
I do love Gears though... easily the best game ive played in a while...

Hello all! I must say that I created myself an account just for posting in this workspace gallery. I watched this topic for a while, and now, here I am posting my crappy workstation (Linux). Hope to buy soon a dual-core laptop :)

The desk is very old and it was manually made here in Romania. I think I should buy something more fancy, but for this moment I enjoy the old look of my desk. BTW, my camera is kind of crappy .

I wouldn't knock it at all. We all start somewhere. Welcome to the [h] BTW! I take it you like yellow! That desk lamp reminds me of big bird.

nah i doesn't, and the cord is very light that you don't even feel it's corded. honestly, i'm not a fan of cordless mice due to their performance reliability issue, NOT SURE IF IT'S STILL AN ISSUE. i dont like the fact that i have to keep recharging my mouse battery, as it's responsiveness decrease when the battery is low.

they are actually slightly modded Bose mini speaker stands, cost about $50 bucks at Fry's when i bought it. i bought an L-shaped piece of metal with 2 holes on it in order to mount the speakers. i dont have a link to it but im sure you'll find it easily if you go to the bose website or fry's website.

yeah, plus 2000dpi pwnz 1600 anyday.

yah if you're browsing the internet or something...makes pointing an clicking faster, but i've never seen any very good FPS players who were able to handle 2k dpi, heck 1600 is too much already! that's to damn fast, i dont know any human with a degree of reflex that can handle 2k, correct me if i am wrong pls, i hover around 400dpi for sniping and 800 for ground pounding

I prefer 1600 over 800 in a lot of my FPS's and I'd like to think I can hold my own. It's more of because I lack desk space, so I've just practiced keeping my hand steady and knocked up the sensitivity though :)

the g5 is considered a "gaming" mouse yet it has 1600 dpi, you claim thats alot..not sure it is. but hell, i'll just slow down my speed if needed, and boost it up when I want.

nah, i'm saying 1600dpi is too much already, not that the G5 can only go "up to" 1600dpi, it is in fact up to 2000dpi. but don't get me wrong, i'm not saying the G7 sucks it's just a matter of my preference. both mice are share some features, but what really sold me to the G5 is, again i don't worry about forgetting to recharge the battery so i can have optimum performance all the time, and you can adjust the weights. again this is preference, i like my mouse VERY heavy in the front side for maximum stability, it greatly increased my accuracy = MORE FRAGS. but i know some people like it as light as possible. see link below.

I too use that same printer. I picked up mine in 1997 while working at Comp USA. It was abandoned by a customer who just brought it in for a paper jam. I picked it up for exactly $10.00 and a few toner cartridges later it's working still today.

The truth is I have seen so many of the Laserjet 4 series printers still in operation today. As far as printers go I am convinced the Laserjet 4 is among the most reliable printers ever built.

Here is my setup. (Printer is elsewhere in the room.)
