2006 Post Your Workstation

Hi all! New to the forum and I've been lurking here for a while, checking out all the cool case mods and workstation setups. I recently upgraded my old system and bought a new desk so I thought I'd finally post some pictures.

Here is my old workstation:

workstation_old.jpg

It was an AMD Athlon 1.2GHz with 768MB of memory and an AGP nVidia GeForce 5500 w/128MB of memory. The monitor is a Dell 19" 1905FP LCD monitor (very nice). The laptop is my work laptop.

Here is my new workstation:

The new system is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Dual-Core overclocked to 2.4GHz (from 2.2GHz) with 2GB of Dual-Channel DDR memory and a single PCI-E x16 nVidia GeForce 6800GT w/256MB of memory. I also added another Dell 19" 1905FP monitor to run in dual setup.

Since I took this picture I've also added a new wireless keyboard and mouse and I plan to get rid of my old HP LaserJet printer (a freebie) and Canon scanner and replace it with an Epson CX4200. Also plan to eventually upgrade the video card to a single 7900GT or GTX.

I still have cable management to handle and some more setup on the case, but I'll post more pictures as I get the system cleaned up. Thanks for looking!

Invest in some HDMI or DVI wall plates. It's a much cleaner set up than just having holes in the drywall.

I LOVE that idea but the idea of how it works is beyond me. Wouldn't you still have to drill a hole behind tv to run the wire? and where exactly would it run to/from? Where would the back of the plate run to?

/totally confused

the cable box/receiver/etc. would run into the wall plate. the wall plate will be connected to another wall plate directly behind the tv. the tv will be connected to that wall plate.

it's just so that there aren't holes and the wall, giving the area a professional look.

ah, gotcha. I was trying to figure out why they were so expensive though :( Is that because of the included lengthy cable of whatever choice that runs through the wall?

would the wall plate behind the tv even be necessary as it won't be seen and the wires can be run through a circular hole cut behind the tv?

it looks like the nzxt lexa case,

Give the man a gold star! Yes, it is a NZXT Lexa case. Very nice, but be careful with the finish on the front, is scratches very easily.

Buy two plates: one for behind the TV and one for where your components are. Go to Home Depot and buy two PVC Boxes to put int he wall and to attach the wall plates to. Buy a length of DVI or HDMI cable to run behind the wall. Since it's low-voltage you don't need permits or anything. Use a dry-wall saw (these cost about $5) to cut a square hole where you want the two plates to go. Ask someone at Home Depot to show you which boxes to buy if you are confused. I get the orange ones that attach to the drywall and not the studs.

If you run an extra power outlet up to behind the TV then it's a little more involved because you have to splice from a power outlet, junction box, or light. I usually end up doing it myself and shocking the hell out of my hand or hiring someone.

They don't include cable. The reason they are expensive is because DVIgear.com is a ripoff. They do make them very well but it's outrageously priced. I bought from them because, at the time, they were the only ones to make dvi/hdmi wall plates.

Might check out these too: http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/DVI_wall-plate.html

crap. I totally forgot about the power. :( I was all set on doing this, but this may delay me or turn me off from the whole idea. The thought of splicing into a main power source from the house does not sit with me very well.

You guys got some very nice setups. Mine's not much to see, but its the only time my room will ever be (somewhat) clean for another year...so enjoy while you can!

^^ let me guess you got wireless keyboard and mouse and a ned tray so you can ly in bed and do everything :d

ah if only that were the case. although i do have a laptop as the next best alternative so i can still sit anywhere i want

I would, and have, put them on the end part...but bad experiences of me or some other person knocking them over and plus the fact i mostly listen to music with them convinced me to simply just leave them the way it is.

Begone... You have SO many CD's... lol I hope those arn't dvd's.

What could you POSSIBLY need all that storage for? Hmmmmmm

Heres my dual display kick butt setup enjoy

haha, ya, i know its old as hell. but it is halfway decent, or, atleast a quarter of the way decent. it performs perfectly fine for what i do. i boguth a better budget card (ati radeon 9250 pci 256mb) which works well with cs 1.6 (the only game i play.) i also upgraded from 256mb to 512 mb of ram. everything other than that are original parts.

I just fixed a client's computer that looks somewhat like that. It's an HP that looks to be in the same case. They're a pain to open up and put back together...I told him he needs a new case, heh.

where do u put ur legs man? That sub takes all the room.

...then I see crutches so I hope I didnt offend :)

actually, that offened me alot. i lost one of my legs in a car crash 2 years ago......

hahahaha, nah, just kidding. i recnetly broke my foot, thats what those are for. what i do is put one foot on top of the sub and one foot off to the side in the space between the sub and the desk... thats why its off center, so i can put my foot there.

Lemme guess.

Wife broke your leg when you walked in the door with that pc and she was like teh noes not another pc!
