I have a server 2000 with exchange (5.5? i think). Something has happened and the OS won't boot. Been messing with different things to fix it. That's not the point though.
They have a tape back up of the server.
They do not have their 2000 cd.
May end up doing a reload and restore from the backup.

Question - is it possible to load small business server 2003 instead of 2000 and restore the 2000 tape back up to it? I don't think so, but wanted to see what I'd get in response to it. More info needed, let me know.

Erm... Not sure how well thats going to work.

From what I can tell you though is that you do *NOT* want to install the entire SBS suite and then restore.

The restoration procedure will depend on what software was used to perform the backup. How much of the server you restore largely depends on how well the tape backup was setup in the first place.

What software was used to backup the server?
What *exactly* was backed up? just business data or the entire server?

From experience, your going to want to hire a professional who deals with SBS for the job since SBS in itself is tricky to backup let alone perform a disaster recovery restore.

There are also other considerations by installing SBS, First off there cant be another on the network.. Also This server will become your PDC, you have no choice in that, also if you have anyone connecting via terminal services you can kiss that goodbye also..

psst

Exchange 5.5 and Exchange 2000 do not work with Windows 2003. You MUST upgrade to Exchange 2003.

Meaning either recover what you have or be prepared to upgrade Exchange along with Windows.
