1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Mostly gaming, but needs to be fast enough for Matlab/Simulink and other engineering related applications.. Not as important is Photoshop and video encoding. It should be decent, but doesnt have to be the fastest in that area.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
1500€, which should be around 2150$, but everything is a bit more expensive in Europe, so let's stick with 2000$ as a budget.

3) Where do you live?
Germany, so no Newegg for me. I will probably order from mindfactory.de and alternate.de

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
CPU, RAM, GPU, Mainboard, Case, HDD, PSU, Bluray Drive, (Soundcard)

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
I have an Intel X25-M G2 160GB SSD, which I would like to reuse if possible. Or would that be stupid?

6) Will you be overclocking?
Probably not while the warranty still lasts

7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
24" 1920x1200. Is it possible to have 2x24" + HDMI TV on one GPU? Don't need it right now, but would be nice to have for the near future.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
I want to finalize the build this weekend and order next week.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc.
Some of the Z68 stuff definitely sounds interesting

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?

So as I said, it will be mostly used for playing the latest games. So I compiled a few items already and would like your opinion and suggestions for the missing parts.


CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K (or is the 2600k worth 110$ extra for Engineering+light video encoding?)
RAM: 8GB (2x 4096MB) G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3-1333 DIMM CL9-9-9-24
HDD: 2x 1000GB Samsung Spinpoint F3
Mobo: Asus P8Z68-V PRO Z68 S1155
Case: Silverstone FT02 (I heard that it's reasonably silent and overall a great case)
PSU: Corsair AX750 (enough?)
BluRay: Samsung SH-B123L (don't have any specific need, so this should be good enough)

That leaves me with 3 things I can't decide on at all.

GPU: ? (Normally I'm a little Nvidia fanboy, but I will just take what's better)
CPU Cooler: ?
Soundcard: ?


It would be great if you could help me. Thank you in advance :)
 
For your usage, the 2600K is worth the extra cash. The AX750 is more than enough. So far your current parts choices are fine.

GPU wise, go for the HD 6950 2GB or the HD 6970 2GB. Speaking of GPUs, yes you can have 2x24" + HDMI TV on one GPU if it's an AMD GPU and if one of those 24" monitor is connected via displayport or working DVI to displayport adapter.

GPU HSF wise, I recommend the Coolermaster Hyper 212+ 120mm HSF
 
Would the 2048MB Gigabyte Radeon HD 6970 be a good choice?

With that and a 2600k I would be at 1800$, so I've got a little wiggle room. Anything else I should upgrade or get?

Yes that card would be a good choice.

You might as well get another 8GB set of RAM to get a full 16GB. Then grab a SSD like Crucial's C300 or m4 SSDs or Intel's 510 series SSDs.
 
Would it really make sense to get a newer SSD, considering that I already got a X25-M G2?

Seems like my shop doesn't have the Gigabyte card in stock anymore. What do you think about the Asus EAH6970 DCII? Does it even fit properly in the FT02 and is the triple slot design something good, or should I get the 2slot XFX Radeon HD 6970 instead. Both cards cost pretty much the same.

But I guess that would ruin the possibility of a 2nd card in the future, so that's probably not worth it.
 
Yeah try to stick with a two slot design like the XFX.

And one last question before I'm ready to order: Someone told me that there are often problems when using all 4 Ram slots. Is that still a problem or not?

Yes, that would make it similar to my system, see sig.
Rocks for video, gaming and music ripping.
