Hey all,

I've been out of the HW buying scene for quite a while but I have seen some good prices for AMD stuff. I'm basically looking for the best bang for the buck on ONLY a mobo, cpu, and ram (4gb minimum), all totaling about $200. Any suggestions would be awesome and appreciated.

Thanks

What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Where do you live?
What PSU will you be using?
Will you be overclocking?

Corsair 450VX?

That mobo is pretty decent for the price. Since you're not overclocking, just drop the HSF that he listed.

Cool thanks guys, maybe I should try to save up a little more for a quad core :D

Builds are going to depend on what games your going to be playing if any. If your going to be playing battlefield bad company 2 I prefer to build using a 4 core. I feel like I skimped out buying my 3 core.

What I dont get is why all the suggestions are for micro atx boards?? This is a standard gaming pc with antec p180 case so I really don't need micro. All I've ever bought are standard atx boards. maybe just because they are cheaper?

That's pretty much it: They're cheaper. Your budget does not allow for a standard ATX motherboard.

Definitely go with Bastage's recommendations. Sorry 4LC4PON3!

Actually, microATX boards fit nicely into standard ATX cases.

And the only reason why we are recommending microATX boards over standard ATX boards in the same price range is that all of the competitively-priced standard ATX boards are outdated or obsolete (this means that those standard ATX boards use older, no-longer-widely-used RAM technology and/or lack many of the currently popular modern features found in microATX boards in the same price class). Plus, the least expensive worthwhile standard ATX AMD motherboard now costs as much money as many of the worthwhile Intel motherboards we have been recommending for those interested in building an Intel system.

The only reason for a full atx board anymore is for crossfire or sli. feature wise you can get pretty much everything else out of a matx board and a lower cost.

the problem with that board you listed catz is that its a "AM2+/AM2" though it will hold an AM3 proc you have to use the expensive DDR2 memory wich as you see DDR3 is only 50 bucks at this point. its also an older tech board so my suggestions above are still the best choices

Hello again,

what if I could bring my total budget to $300? just curious what opportunities that would allow for, a nicer mobo would be good especially since i need onboard sound, and quad core cup would be preferable.. i have had good luck with gigabyte boards, maybe i should see what they have to offer

So the 200 dollar build I linked on the previous page with good onboard sound & a quad core CPU wasn't good enough? If you want to up your budget to 300 you can get to a Phentom II, but board wise its not likely that your going to get any features or better performance within budget.

I figured if I put a little more into my budget I could get something better than patriot and biostar.. brands i usually wouldn't take into serious consideration..i'll take a look at phenom 2 prices, thx!
