We watch TV through our computer on an older Nvidia Geforce4 440 8x (AGP), something like that. Well anyways, I want to upgrade to an 9800XT ATI card. Those dont come with tuners so im wondering if i could just pick up a cheaper TV tuner that can slide into a PCI slot and have the mobo run 2 video cards, the 9800XT in the AGP slot and the TV tuner (or an older video card w/tuner) in the pci slot. Im sure I could buy a card that is ONLY a TV tuner to go into the pci slot. The thing is i want to still be able to watch TV but have a good video card in my AGP slot (9800XT). Thanks:) Id appreciate any input.:)

And would the system be ok with both a 9800XT in the AGP slot and a TV tuner (or an older vid card w/tuner) in a pci slot. I just wanna make sure this is ok before I go and buy a 9800XT.

The basic system is an AMD Athlon XP 2600+
Nvidia MX 440 SE (AGP) (garbage i know thats why im upgrading)

Err of course. Almost all tuners are PCI based, unless we are talking all in wonder, or even some USB based cards now..
Go to www.tv-cards.com and read up on pro's cons of various tuners.
 
thanks gsporiqua :) Actually our nvidia MX 440SE i believe is AGP and that does have a TV Tuner. If that is a pci slot then thats even an extra bonus and i dont have to buy a tuner, but im almost certain that card is AGP. So ill probably have to sell that card on ebay for dirt cheap and then buy my 9800XT for that slot, and then another tv tuner for the PCI...thanks for all ur help :)
 
In most situations PCI based TV tuner cards deliver better quality than all in one AGP cards. If you upgraded your mx440 to the 9800xt you would need a new tuner card as the motherboard only has one AGP slot. Also, there are many better cards for the money right now. With the 9800xt going for $350 - $400 you could get a vanilla 6800 and a hauppauge PCI based tuner card for a similar price.
 
Yeah but the 6800 series Nvidia dont have very good clockspeeds... Except the 6800Ultra which i dont have the money for. Ive been looking on ebay for a 9800XT and ive been finding some pretty good deals...im on a tight budget thats why i might have to buy used. As for a tv tuner, i could probably pick that up pretty cheap and im not too worried about that...ive also considered a 9800PRO AIW...again the clock speed lacks a LITTLE bit at 380mhz but still not too bad...but i still want that XT. Thats why I was only wondering if a PCI tuner or an older pci vid card w/tuner and a 9800XT AGP would conflict in anyway or something? thanks
 
Just so you know, clockspeeds arent everything, there are many other factors involved in the actual speed of a video card like the number of pipelines. Benchmarks will prove that a 9800xt WILL get blown away by a 6600gt or 6800 for less than what a 9800xt goes for. Just my 2 cents. (Ive always wanted to say that)
 
There is more to graphics cards than clock speeds.

Most cards of the same price point from this gen perform similarly. (besides the x800 xl :) )
 
I knew i was gonna get posts saying "clockspeeds arent everything" after i mentioned slow clockspeeds. dont worry ppl i do know that...but i dont want a 325mhz core in my system...sorry to say. Comparing the 9800XT prices on ebay to the 6800s...the 6800s are way more money and i believe the 9800XT is just as good. And this thread has gone off topic, i was just curious if the 2 cards would conflict...with a card in the pci slot (tv) and the 9800XT in the agp slot. thanks again:)
 
basically what they are trying to say is that getting the 9800xt is stupid. you will have a hard time finding a good USED 9800xt for less than 200 dollars, which is what you can buy a NEW 6600gt for. The 6600gt outperforms the xt in most tests and also has a 500mhz clock speed.

you would absolutely be getting ripped off by buying the 9800xt because the price has not dropped, it is older technology and is out of production.

and to address what i thought was your question: tv tuner cards are PCI, a TV tuner card is not a video card. your current card just has a tv tuner card integrated onto the video card. you will find that a tv tuner card by itself provides a lot better quality than your integrated one, and that it will not effect the performance of your (WHAT I HOPE WILL NOT BE A 9800XT) video card.

Ok, believe that if you want to. The 6800 and x800 series beat the 9800xt like a red headed step child. :cool:

If you can get a good deal on ebay then more power to you. At retail though, the 9800xt is a POS compared to similarly priced cards.

And no, in most cases the cards won't conflict.

L M F A O !!!!!!!! dude my 6800 Gt at 350 core / 1000 Mhz Memory will STOMP THE CRAP out of that 9800xt with *Faster clocks* do yourself a favor get a 6800 Non uiltra or a 6800 Gt
and who cares how fast the clocks are...
id be embarrased to say i bought a 9800 xt over a 6800 series becasue it has a faster clock .yet is slower in games

Its just that ive been told CLOCKspeed is one of the most important things on a video card for gaming. And it kinda stuck im my head. lol The only thing that holds me backon the 6600GT is the 128bit interface. Will that at all pose a problem?

The 6600GT is a great card; while it won't let you play the newest and latest games at 16x12, you will have an excellent gaming experience at a lower resolution, assuming that you have a decent processor to back it up.

Don't just settle for any TV tuner! I know everyone has been going nuts over the video card thing but don't just buy any generic tuner card. It all depends on what you plan to do with the card.
 
Lol i plan to watch TV with the Tvtuner card. Its just regular Cable, approx 60 channels or so. Does anyone have some ideas for some cheaper cards but with at least a moderate quality. Thanks:) And one more thing...

6800GT VS X800 XL PE or X800 XL (no pe)

X800XL has the most bang for the buck. But I haven't seen an AGP version (it might be out there though).
 
The leadtek 6800GT runs fairly quiet, and come with a massive 2 slot copper cooler, which means that if you want to OC you aren't going to need to purchase a third party cooling solution.
