2 Raptors in RAID0 vs. 1 SSD Drive

Currently I have two WD raptor 10,000 rpm drives running in RAID0 for my boot drive. I was wondering if it would be worth it to upgrade to a low end SSD drive for the boot drive. How much performance gain could I expect? I was thinking of an SSD drive in the $75-$95 range (30GB is fine). What drive would you recommend?

Obviously if I were to get 2 SSD drives in RAID0 that would definitely be faster than the raptors, but I was wondering how 1 SSD drive would compare to 2 raptors in RAID0. Thank you.

Any good SSD will murder any amount of mechanical disks in raid0 when it comes to seek and access time and 90 %+ of typical desktop or even server disk usage. High end models will also beat 2 Raptors in STR.
 
Corsair SF-1200 based (F240 for example) would murder stomp raptors in speed

less real-estate, FAR less noise and less heat/power as well

Price per GB is the only negative factors for SSDs

I understand that a high end SSD will beat 2 raptors, but will a low end model (such as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...ark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Page=2#scrollFullInfo) beat 2 raptors? And is the performance increase of a low end SSD over 2 raid0 raptors worth the cost? Should I stick with the 2 raptors or spend the money to get a single SSD drive. That is my question.

The problem is I have a limited budget to upgrade my computer, and I want to get the most bang for my buck so to speak. There are other things I could upgrade if the difference between SSD and 2 raptors isn't that big.
 
Please run AS-SSD on your Raptor RAID volume.

Then you can compare that with what other people have measured with AS-SSD on their SSDs.

For an inexpensive SSD, I recommend the Intel 40GB X25-V. I expect it will outperform the Raptors in all but sequential write speed.
 
And are we talking about raptors or velociraptors? Because if we are talking about the 3 to 5 year old 74 GB raptor current 7200 RPM hard drives beat that.
 
in reality the ssd will own everything that isnt an ssd. period. the HDD will handle one thing better: seq write, BUT onlyu under certain conditions. if you are doing other things while doing a seq write (ex. using browser, gaming, watching video) then the SSD will positively torch it. hdd do not multitask anywhere as well as ssd. not even comparable.
 
I was recently working with a RAID 0 array of raptors on some quad core Intel machine and it was positively a pig compared to 1 X-25M on this 2 core, low voltage Mini ITX thing I use as a desktop. Honestly it astounds me that people are still in the dark about SSD's. Getting a SSD is the single most drastic improvement you can make to your system.

Newegg lists the sequential write speed of the OCZ at 70 MB/s while the Intel is only listed as 35 MB/s, however the Intels sequential read is faster than the OCZ. I will be using this drive for the operating system only.

Size doesn't matter, I just want to know which drive is faster for a boot drive. Thank you.

The Intel is faster due to it significantly better random read/write speeds.
 
I'm still getting over the shock of moving to SSD's, I've actually been buying them and upgrading my family's computers and some of my friends. If you are thinking about going SSD, stop thinking and just do it.
