read this thread http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=300888 and seen a post by "Papsomax" about how he is running two instances of folding on his athlonXP boxes.
Most AMD folders run two instances of fah on the XP's. Since I began running 2 instances of fah on my AMD's, I've seen a 15-20% increase in ppw over running just one instance. These are dedicated folding boxes and if you look at the cpu usage one fah instance takes up 48% of the cpu, the other instance takes up 48%.

im curious how to do this first and second if any one has tried this and nothiced any PPW increase at all.

I have never seen any posts that have shown that running two copies of F@H on an AMD system have shown any increase over one copy.

With a hyperthreaded Intel system then you will get an increase of around 15-20% with two copies.

Also since Stanford rebenched all the protiens on their new Intel "standard" system I have seen an increase in Points per hour per Ghz from around 1.5 pphpg to around 1.8 pphpg on my AMD systems with Gromac's.
This is also an increase of around 20%.
Tinkers have gone from around 0.7 pphpg to around 3.7 pphpg.
An increase of +500%...... :eek:

If you are going to run two copies on a dedicated folding box then the best way is to run one copy on low with F@H for Gromac's/ Tinkers.
And the other copy on idle with G@H for timeless Tinkers.
That way your boxen normaly crunches F@H but if it cannot get a new download then it crunches G@H.

I run two instances occasionally when I know I'm not going to be around to connect to the internet (damn dialup) and don't want the system sitting idle. I have never seen any extra work being done. The instances just use up 50% each and they take twice as long to complete.
 
There was a protein (can't remember which one now) that went idle for a short period of time and then started up again. If I remember correctly quite a few people started running two instances just so the box would be doing something during the idle time. I usually always run two instances just in case a Stanford server goes down or I loose my internet connection or something, each instance takes roughly twice as long to complete so your machine dosn't have to connect to Stanford as much. In the long run it's more efficient, 15-20% is doubtful but still more efficient. :eek:

Run some benchies and let us know what you find out. :)
