Culprit #1
AMD Athlon 1 Ghz
256 Mb Generic RAM
IWill mobo (working on finding model #)
Ati Rage IIC AGP
40 GB WD
Netgear NIC
Generic CD-ROM
Windows XP SP1

Symptoms
From day 1 it was flaky randomly hanging and just kept progressing to the point that it randomly locks doing anything/nothing
Underclocking to 800 Mhz allows me to start doing some archiving of data before it hangs after a while
Passes memtest/scandisk/WD diag w/o errors

Culprit #2
PII 350 Mhz
32 Mb PC100 Generic RAM
Asus P2B mobo
Cirrus Logic 5465 AGP
Intel Pro NIC
Generic CD-ROM
Windows98 SE

Symptoms
Seemed stable ran stress tests and shes passes them all
Randomly boots from CD though.....half of the time shes good...other half not so good
1/10 POSTs list undefined hardware error, quick tap of F1 and we're up and flying
Windows98 no longer recognizes CD-ROM (BIOS does though) I know theres a fix but MS Knowledge Base isnt behaving right now

Suggestions would be appreciated
Working on BIOS flashes for both boxes as I type

Clean out the cases?

read the Tweak Guide sticked to the top of the G[H] (specifically the Hardware ones, for instance the Airflow Guide, etc...)

perhaps the Thermal paste you had on there has worn out? especially as underclocking (and thus lowering the temp. of the CPU) helps?

culprit #2 is the only one that had a bit of problem with dust build up and it turns out the secondary IDE controller was a problem...I moved the cd-rom to a slave on the primary and everything seems to play nice

i never thought to check the thermal paste...but now that you mention it its not a bad idea...thanx

both boxes have clean installs now and im running prime95 on them over night to see what happens

.....crossing fingers/toes/eyes

How is the PSU in #1? Could be an issue. Also, have you run memtest on it? The generic RAM could be causing crashes.

both clean of viruses on clean installs

havent had time to check the PSUs....I inherited these boxes and basically got instructions to make them work now without spending money
