simple question, is it safe to hook up to fans(low power 120mm) to one motherboard fan header?

I only ask because i have only one fan header and no free molex connectors.
 
yes, you can use a splitter (they make a 3/4 pin motherboard header to 2 3pin or 2 molex connectors if you look hard) or splice the red and black wires of one fan to the other. Do not splice the yellow rpm wire as it may cause problems if the fans have them. Just use one yellow for rpm monitoring of one of the two fans if you have yellow wires.

Note: you said low power and I am taking you at your word. Modern motherboard fan headers should be good for 1.5A total with is 18Watts and is plenty to run 2 normal fans. If you have beastly fans you need to check, adding the current draw or wattage which should be on the fan label and see what the combined load is. But with any normal fan, even 120's 2 fans on one motherboard header should not be a problem with a motherboard manufactured in the last 5 years. You might check your manual, sometimes they put the max amperage in the "connectors" section.
