I need some input whether I screw something up or just a coincidence. I bought 3 brand new APC Smart UPS model SUA1500, these are high end model. I connect the 1st one to a 20A/15A wall plug, this is a delicated elec. line that I have been using for 1.5 yr. It was meant for my SUA2200 SMart UPS, but due to the fan noise, I stop using it.

There is a plastic plug at the rear end of the SUA1500, at the tail end of this plug, there is the thin plastic dangle. I simply push the plastic dangle out of the way, and within seconds, the UPS beeps and said Replace Battery.

So I stop touching that plastic tail, and everything back to normal. When I touch it again, just by pushing it out of the way so I can plug in my answering machine adaptor, the above happens again.

http://www.apc.com/products/moreimages.cfm?partnum=SUA1500&type=Back

see the above pic., it's the plastic plug at the near top right.

Repeat the above 3rd time, I got the unit totally dead, no beep, no battery, completely malfunction.

====================

Now, I replace with the 2nd brand new SUA1500, everything works fine, but on the 4th day, there is a loud noise that sounds like gun shot, turns out it's a capacitor that blows out, the unit is still functioning, but I need to replace it, as someone has the same problem, and weeks later, there is smoke coming out of the unit.

The question is, could the above be cause by that 20A/15A wall plug? The 20/15A was installed by an electrican, I use rated 20A armor cable, and it's directly connected to the elec. panel at the basement. It's meant to fit 15A or 20A plugs.

If not, is it fair to assume it's just a coincidence to have 2 DOA?

You really shouldn't mess with the battery connector while the unit is powered on. Only disconnect or move it when the unit is off for battery replacement or shipping.

Wow...I was thinking of buying a bunch of these too. Besides your problems....are you happy with them?

you dont happen to have a laser printer or copier plugged into them do you?

no I have 3 separate independent power source in this room, each one of them directly connect to the panel at the basement. The laser printer is on that other separate wall plug. So no way it can affect the UPS.

JayAre, they are the best that $$ can buy. Not to mention there is only 2 brand names, the other one sucks (TrippLite). And SMart UPS is the fastest switching that I can find, I believe it's 2 ns on surge but I can't find that table I seen before on their web site.

There are tons of brand names:

APC

Tripplite

CyberPower

Liebert

Eaton Powerware

OneAC

MDS Power

MinuteManUPS

Opti-Ups

Exide Technologies

GE

Toshiba

Power Innovations

ChloridePower

Energy Technologies inc

Intellipower

With Tripp-Lite being one of the better that sells into the consumer range.

APC is good, but Liebert is definitely better. I used to have a Smart-UPS 1400 and my Liebert kicked its ass to the curb (or, rather, to Ebay)

Does APC has a big leap in R&D vs. the others?

Exide is good, but not much distributors carries it. I don't know triplite, quality isn't good, I have sell that brand to some clients before

Triplite, is not better then APC from what happend. Durring a brownout for 3-4 seconds killed a computer mobo, my network (switch, router, and network storage), a monitor, and a printer. oh and that was on 2 triplites I didn't have one I had 2 one for for computer and printer and the other one for network. Sure did a nice job.

But in my room (4 APC's) everything was fine. that a flat screen tv, 3 computers, 2 laptops, my dsl network and some other crap...

Just could be my luck I guess.

If your not going to use APC (which I consider the best) at least do yourself a favor and get another great brand like MGE.

No they have a big leap in PR vs. the others.

Yeah, APC quality is crap when you buy their crap units too.

It was and when you are comparing different UPS topology/design/ratings with different loads the outcome is completely uncomparable.

There is something wrong with your product numbers (APC missing some information to know what they are) and/or the Tripp-Lite ones are very old.

Im away from home for about a week to give you full infomation on all the battery back up's

I read from a table at APC.com that Smart UPS is 2 ns switching time when there is a surge. And i am quite impress by that but I can't find that table.

I notice none of you mentioned Compaq/HP. I attended a training course a no. of yr. ago on their UPS. Apparently, it's quite good, they are 3 yr. warranty w/ pre-failure, i.e., the UPS has ongoing diagosis, send a mesg. to the computer that it's going to fail, and you get the UPS replace before it actually fail.

But the really good thing is, they are actually Exide UPS and they c/w 3 yr. warranty vs. 2 yr. at APC.

Our UPS is a Liebert PS2200RT2-230, AFAIK it's response time is 0n.s as well because it's setup as a buffer between the wall socket and the server (it also helps smooth out the voltages being delivered)

I've never heard of this brand name before. Is this a "Nobody" brand name or do they have hundreds of millions dollar put in to R&D?

Tens of millions into R&D. One of the biggest companies out there.

You seem to be very fixated to R&D and "brand name", obviously, this has done no good in the past. You should just look for recommendations and what meets your needs. There are going to be newer vendors or smaller vendors that out perform the larger or more well known vendors.

UPS's have warranties for these events. No matter how good equipment or what brand you have, this can happen. There are a various assortment of possibilities on what could have caused your UPS to fail... this could be due to the age, battery, condition, etc etc etc or simply a failure due from bad components.

libert is THE brandname when it comes to large on-line ups systems...

but anyway... sounds like someone just had some bad luck (or electrical problems)... which can happen with any ups...

i would have a qualified electrician come and inspect your circuit grounds, just a suggestion...

anyway i have all APC's at home (smart UPS') and i have never had a problem (and i live in miami, so lightening and power glitches are an everyday event... along with the occational hurricane )

at work i have a mix of large rackmount APC's, Trip-Lite's, and HP ups'... they are all ok, not a huge fan of the HP ones... they seem cheap

Because R&D yields high performance spec. For a UPS, I need:

- ) Voltage Regulation as tight as 0% if possible, + and - ,

-) fast switching from detection of surge, like 2ns, 0 ns sounds even better

==============================

Anyhoo, for those of you using Smart UPS from APC, I have a question on the spec. stated at the back of the UPS

The UPS is 1500VA, and yet they said their rated Wattage is only 980W.

For a household or an office building, the power factor should be about 0.90, so using the power factor triangle,

W (Real power) = 1500 VA x 0.9 = 1350W

As such, the UPS should support about 1350W

For a UPS that is rated at 1500VA, and gives only 980W, that would mean a power factor of only 0.65, how can this be? I am not running my UPS at a sawmill.:D
