2.8P4 vs 3.2 Celeron

I'm currently using a P4 2.66 and want to nudge up the ladder a bit. Can't afford to upgrade MB so need to stay with 478pin cpu.

I'm looking at either the 3.2 Celeron or a P4 2.8 800 mhz or a Prescott running at 2.8. I use my puter primarily as a DAW and I play entirely too much WoW.

Machine now is:

2.66 P4
NVidia 6800 unlocked
1.5 gigs of DDR ram.

definitely the P4. it has the extra L2 cache which is critical to netburst, and is also going to be hyperthreaded if it is an 800fsb chip.
 
The P4 will be faster, but not by as much as you'd think. The Celeron D's are actually pretty fast. I have a Celeron D 320(2.4) at 3.8 and it is slightly faster than a 3.0C. And in some benchmarks is actually faster than my 2.4C@3.4.

But for you, since you game I would get the P4. The P4 will beat the Celeron, even if overclocked, in gaming any day.

plus, no amount of clockspeed can make up for hyperthreading. It adds a great deal of smoothness under load compared to the non-HT parts. For example, the difference between my old 3200+ winnie at 2.5ghz and my current P4 560J @ 4.14ghz is very noticeable under load. The p4 is much more responsive. Obviously not as good as a real dual-core but it definitely better than true single-core.
 
Yeah - in my experience Windows does seem more responsive and fluid than an Athlon XP. My friend is running a 3200+ w/ 1gb of ram and using XP on his machine feels slight "slower" than my own machine... but that chip would see things differently in gaming.I could be imagining it.
 
Definitely the P4. I've seen a 1.7Ghz Pentium 4 outrun 2.7Ghz Celeron. Same specs for the computers but different CPUs.

The original poster is talking about a Prescott Celeron D, not a Northwood Celeron.
