2 + 2 = 4 = SLI on steroids, QUAD solution?

Well, make of this whatever you want, but WTFBBQ?

Well ok, so it is not 1 single quad, it is two dual GPU cards running in SLI or some other parallel format. The Gigabyte dual GPU card got mediocre reviews, so whats this. I found these on the web, by the URL they seem to be ASUS, not the Gigabyte with bad reviews ..

+ look at the slots & placement of cards wtf and the HSF??

wheres the sli connector? i thought the whole point of a dual gpu card was a cheaper sli alternative

if you look closely, one card seems to be in an "AGP" conector, and on the PCI-e or maybe something else, I dont know?

PS: there are several more pictures, just get creative and change the number at th end of the URL ;)

also, is this maybe the conector isntead of the standard SLI thingy?

Wasn't it DFI that had the "XLI" that didn't require the bridge connector?

conectors arent needed for sli at all, if you knew anything about it sli works without the connector its just there to lower latency

I dont understand why SLI wouldnt work between a PCI-E card and a AGP card if they both were locked down to AGP bus speeds.

Wrong, DFI is using the SLI bridge chip. A few clicks on DFI's website can tell you this.

I think its a money shot, but there are rumors of a motherboard that spilts the 2-8x sli config into 4-4x sli settings. Good when it works, but when it doesn' (WoW) you are running off a single 6600GT at 4x speed. Which needless to say is just lame.

Woudln't the GPU chips be rotated at an angle of the other board was an agp 6600. I thought becasue of the native design of PCI-E the gpu has to be rotated on no PCI-E cards. That solution seems very expensive, not too interesting to me.

Just b/c there's a picture of it doesnt mean it will work.

Hold on let me take a picture of 6 PCI cards in all of PCI slots on a motherboard.... and tell people he look, 6 x videocards in SLI mode! :)

So what exactly is the question? All this is is two dual core cards (that are probably test cards and not retail) without heatsinks in a SLI board. The cards are not SLI capable though. Looks like wishful thinking to me.

Any dual core PCI-express car out now, or this one by ASUS uses SLI. Its just built into the card.

The question is if Asus is going to make a motherboard that supports 2 SLI setups. Meaning PCI-express 16 divided by 4.

newcard.jpg

was taken from the secone pic and blowup useing opengl filters, its about the best i can do... now we need some photoshop maverics to clean it up and tell us what it says.. all i can make out is 6800 gt on the chip and samsung on the ram

edit/ the chip in the lowewr right reads samsung, 434, L4755183x and eather 6088 or 6c88

thore

jesus christ...it says 6600GT...these are the asus dual chip cards...they have those little white connectors that could THEORETICALLY be for SLi...and that's ALL ANYONE KNOWS

First- those are 2 6600GT dual cores sitting in two pci-e slots w/o heatsink/fans so probably aren't going to work....or if they do not for long. Edit: That doesn't mean the scenario won't work....just not as pictured...ie no heatsink/fans AFAIK

Second-SLI doesn't require the connector......or even two 16x slots

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=850692

http://xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=47627

Third- SLI isn't a functoin of the cards so if the drivers are right then the SLI will work. Who knows maybe ASUS or Gigabyte will decide to make it work.

These are pics of the new ASUS 6600GT dual core board. some believe that little white socket connector near where the SLI usually is in fact the SLI connector, and retail boards (this is a prototype) will have the actual SLI connector. Guess we won't know til the real thing is out.

Looks like a regular multi-vidcard setup to me.. Minus the heatsinks of course.

Jesus christ, for the last time, these cards can not be run in SLI mode!

As of now. How do you know its the same case for cards still in the R&D departments?

The website that this pics were taken from has a different story. Its got a "what-if, its possible, maybe, could asus do it" scenerio going on.

It talks about running the PCI-express standard in 4 parts instead of 2. With the motherboard being the road block for why it hasn't been done yet.

So does anyone know theoretically using this same principle will it be possible to put dual cores on an AGP card? Does nvidia SLI function completely independant of the Pci-e bus?

I saw the press on the 3d1 a few weeks ago and have been wondering if we could eventually see single card agp SLI solutions.

theoretically nvidia or asus could be working on an SLI solution not requiring a chip bridge, ala voodoo2. perhaps it could be the end of the throughs of prople bitching about not being able to play fucking grim fandango in SLI mode

You can clearly see, from the photo, not only the ASUS brand name on it, but the sli connector [pointed out in the linked image above] as well as the pci-e power header under the asus logo.

My guess is the picture has no heatsinks cause they were going to water cool it :)

Says who? Where do you get this information? Since these cards are obviously not OUT in the retail channel yet, who knows what they can do? Unless you work for asus, I doubt you have any knowledge as to WHAT their capabilities are. - If you have some PROOF that they can't run in SLI mode [x4] enlighten us. Otherwise... quit your taking the lords' name in vain and be constructive.

Excuse this if someone has already busted your balls about this but how do you know?

It would be up to gigabyte and asus to make specific drivers to make them work since the SLI can be handled a number of different ways in the hardware(ie MOBO) any number of which would be compatible.

So how do you KNOW it won't work when it isn't out yet? Crystal ball?

I already asked him that.

Right I must have skipped it somewhere up there...sorry.....posts seemed to have gone a little astray of topic so I just skimmed them.

And I asked him before you did. No need to bust someone's chops over a repost with the thread already gone to hell.

Apparently you didn't get that the reason I said that was specifically because he said "sorry if it's already been said" .. I was kidding..

Dual core cards running in SLI should be possible. The signal could be split by the drivers and then passed off to each of the processors on the card themselves. Also I wouldn't tak e too much note about the heatsinks being removed. They could have just taken them off for pictures to show that there were actually two GPUs on each card and not just a huge heatsink covering blank PCB.

Yea and thats just the thing...it has to be enabled inside of the drivers. Something that nVidia hasnt done and doesnt show any intentions of doing. That is part the reason why believeing that that setup was actually running a dual core sli setup is pretty dumb.

Another factor to bring in is, whats the point of having a dual core sli setup? Why not just buy 1 6800 Ultra? or 1 6800 GT? There just hasnt been an tangible reason to buy a dual gpu video card yet with the current prices that they are set to retail at.

Well by the driver comment I meant the dual gpus on the cards would be transparent to them. Perhaps all the drivers can see is two cards, and then send signals to them as the drivers would for any SLI setup. Then when those signals arrive the hardware takes over and further splits the signals distributing it to each GPU on the cards.

As far as it being necessary, probably not. I would much rather buy a 6800GT now and then maybe add one down the road, or just upgrade to an all new solo card alltogether. This is really only another rich kids toy, or a tech demo, but it's still interesting.

What would really make it more intresting is if they did this for AGP. About the only reason why a AMD person would upgrade to PCIe is for SLI as an upgradble option plan. However if you were to start to make dual gpu video cards in an agp format...well lets just say PCIe is moving really slow right now it will probably move in slower if dual gpu cards became available in agp flavors
