Hey guys. Not sure if it's kosher to make my first post here a call for help, but if it matters, I have been a lurker for years and years and you guys always deliver.
So earlier today, my 4 year old machine died a horrible, horrible death and I figure it's time to get with the times.
I have been researching for the last few hours to get back up to speed with all the new tech, but as you can imagine, I can only learn so much in 4 hours. I have a basic idea of what I need/want but I'm sure you guys will have much better suggestions.
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
3D modeling, texturing and photorealistic rendering (3d Studio Max)
Digital Sculpting (ZBrush & Mudbox)
After Effects, Heavy Photoshop, etc
Lets just say I need to run everything in the Adobe CS 5 Master suite at maximum.
Massive Gaming (Ex. SC II at full settings). I need to be able to put this thing through the paces.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$2000. I can go to $2,500 with all the shipping included as a max price.
3) Where do you live?
Albuquerque, New Mexico
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
Motherboard, CPU, RAM, GPU, HDD, Power Supply, Case and OS
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Only the Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse
6) Will you be overclocking?
I would like to OC the CPU a TAD but that is up in the air if I want the stress of doing it with my primary work machine
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
I have 2x 24 screens that need to work in multiple setups (dual screen, split, vertical etc)
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
ASAP 4 hours ago would have been good
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
I need at least 2x onboard Firewire ports and support for at least 12GB of RAM upgradable as high as possible for future use.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If so, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
No. I was on Vista but that machine took a dive a few hours ago. Looking for Win 7
I managed to cobble together some good suggestions from here today and came up with a few pieces of hardware that I think will be good, but feel free to laugh, call me names and suggest something better.
MB: GIGABYTE GA-X58A-UD3R LGA 1366
CPU: Intel Core i7-930
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
HDD: Western Digital VelociRaptor WD6000HLHX 600GB 10000 RPM
For graphics cards, I used an old Quadro for a while before changing it to an actual gaming card. The performance change in applications NOT dealing with my 3d programs was substantial and I think I need to go with a gaming card again. Not sure if the advances in the workstation cards (Quadro, FireGL) have made them work well outside of those applications or not. I'm reading up on it.
Cases and Power supplies I am clueless on. I read the links in the FAQ here on power supplies and they made me feel very old and very out of touch. I am assuming I am going to need a fairly large case and a beefy PS.
Thanks a ton for any help.
