Hey guys, I realize this subject is a little beaten to death but I was hoping to get some opinions on a few things.

I would like to pick up a nice 2.0 set of speakers for my apartment. I will use them almost exclusively for music. I listen to a mixture of both rock and hip hop. My soundcard is a Chaintech AV710 and I don't really plan on needing/being able to pick up a subwoofer for a while.

Im hoping to spend less than $200 on this and I've noticed that there are some nice deals out there for some highly regarded sets on this forum that I'm considering:
Swan DK1080MKii ~$125
Swan M200MKii ~$189
Audioengine A2 ~$149
M-Audio AV40 ~$134

I don't really care for booming annoying bass but I am a bit concerned with the consequences of not having a subwoofer in terms of bass response since I do listen to a significant amount of hip hop. Anybody have any opinions or recommendations given the price range? How do these speakers compare to each other and are the price differences justified mainly between Mk200 and the other 3? Thanks for any input :D

The only one that I am sure won't give satisfactory bass will be the D1080 MKII. A2 and M200 MKII might be ok. AV40 should have solid bass.

As already mentioned many times, any of those choices will be a nice addition to your audio setup.

The AV40 is good if you want something that does a respectable job on a limited budget.

I agree that the AV40's are great. I have them hooked up to on board right now, and they still sound great.

I don't have a sub yet, and I find the bass enough. If you need more, there is a bass boost switch on the back.

The AV40's are nice if you can't spend that much, but since you mentioned looking at the M200MKII's, get them.

Best bang for you're buck AM's I have listened to in awhile. Very happy.

Not to mention the quality attainable with a decent DAC.

I would recommend Swans m10... They annihilate absolutely any Bose/Logitech and Creative COMPUTER speakers.. been there done that. (-; And, on top of that, they look totally gorgeous (not as beautiful as my wife but acceptable). Talking of sound, it is clear, refined, precise and the bass is pleasant to the ear, not the big, cheap and boomy bass often heard in other sets.

To sum it up, Swan M200MKii can sound only better. (-:
