Hey Guys,

I am planning to build my first computer. It will mainly serve as a gaming computer, as well a school tool. The OS will be Windows XP Pro (from my old computer). Here are my core components, first revision:

ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe Wireless Edition
AMD 64 X2 5000+ Windsor
Geforce 7950GT KO 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16
Segate Barracuda 7200.10 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA (x2)
RAID 0 configuration
Kingston 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) System Memory (x2)
NEC DVD+R 3550A
Samsung 204B
NeoPower 550W
Antec P-180B Case
Logitech MX1000
Logitech G15

Do you think that all these pieces will function well together? Here is a list of the games that I would like to play on it: Rise of Nations, Rise of Legends, Civilization 4, Command and Conquer: The First Decade, Command and Conquer 3 (when it comes out), and Star Wars: Empire at War. My price window is $2100 - 2400. Thanks for the help.

I would never spend $700 on a processor when one that costs half as much will do the same speed, and to be honest Conroe is the way to go right now. You'll have a faster processor and save enough money to add a Raptor for your OS drive, which will make a significant difference. Why aren't you getting Vista?

I kinda agree with Demographik... As much of an "AMD !!!!!!" (*Edit* HAHA fan boi is edited) as I am, Conroe IS the way to go right now... DDR2 Ram is equal if not cheaper than the DDR1 stuff. Not to mention a E6600 Conroe will, for half the price, beat the pants off that X2 5000...

Sure, the motherboards might cost more, but even if it makes up for the cheaper cost of the CPU, you're still getting a fster system!

What monitor will you be using that requires such a beefy GPU? By all means go and buy it, I want one myself, I'm just curious! You know, DX10 cards are coming out soon... You might be better to wait, or at least till Nvidia shows off their next generation G80 core.

if you order the mobo+cpu thru monarch like I did, the cpu is around $320. ;)

well since nobody else has mentioned I will....there is no such thing as a Geforce 7950GT KO 256MB. The 7950GT is 512MB.

Even though it's the AMD forum, I'm gonna have to agree with everyone else on your processor choice. I built mine (in my sig) when AMD was on top of the game, about 6 months ago, knowing conroe was around the corner.

Conroe really is a freaking monster. Hell, even the Core Solo laptop I bought yesterday, with a single stick of 512mb ram (yes, running single channel) SuperPi's within three seconds of the machine in my sig, with a 1000mhz clock speed decrease! (1.86ghz laptop vs. 2.8ghz desktop). Conroe is even more effecient by a long margin than the laptop versions of Core and Core2.... it's THE way to go right now.

And as everyone else said as well, that's a lot of GPU power, especially for the games you listed you're planning to play, and considering directx 10 release being within half a year.

Then again, you may be looking to go big NOW and upgrade later down the road. But if you're planning on making this machine last you a while, I'd definitely reconsider the CPU/mobo combo towards the direction of Core 2 Duo, and for the time being, maybe one of the 512mb 7900gt's :)

Why the hell does everyone keep saying to lower his gpu? He has a 7950GT 256MB listed which is a mistake that none of you have even figured out. He must have meant 7950GT 512MB since that is the only way they come. A 7950GT is NOT too much gpu for his setup since he has a 1600x1200 monitor. If anything the 7950GT is the minimum he should get for that resolution if he cares about eye candy.

You guys do know that a 7950GT is just an overclocked 7900GT with 512MB and HDCP dont you? I dont think the 7950GT has even been released yet but STOP giving this guy bad video card advice!

People used to say my old 9800 Pro wasn't worth it boils when it first came out. They all had 9700s and comforted themselves at night by saying there really wasn't THAT much of a difference. Well, when I did my X2 build my 9800 got relegated to my moms computer. I had some friends over for a LAN party and had to use her computer for CS: Source. Once I turned off HDR, it purred along at 1680x1050! Let's see your 9700 do that!

i would recommend changing your hard drive setup.

RAID 0 using your only two hard drives (320GB's at that) is prolly not the best way to go.

I'm assuming you're doing the RAID 0 for speed? (however incremental)...

just get a 10k drive to hold your OS and programs and use one or two of those 320's as a storage drive.

I'd like to point out to all the point screaming OMG CONROE CONROE, a 5000+ isn't $700, it's $281.

So is a Conroe... $240 for an E6400 which will whomp that 5000+, stock and overclocked on each. If he wants to spend another $60 on his build, he can get an E6600 which outperforms an FX-62 at *STOCK* by a good amount and would utterly decimate the 5000+. Conroe is simply the only good choice at this time. Otherwise, the rest of the build looks solid to me, but I would swap the motherboard for a Gigabyte DS3 if going for the E6400, or an Asus P5W-DH Deluxe if going for the E6600.

Quoted for truth.

Either way, it's not $700 so people don't need to be misinforming him. I'd personally also go with the E6300 and just overclock it in case you were wondering.

Motherboard

Core E6600

Two of these.

HDD's, One 74GB Raptor and one Seagate 320GB, no reall reason to use Raid-0 but Backups or RAID 1 might not be bad at all.

Skip the added cost of the Neo with that case. This one is just as good if not better.

Optical 1

Optical 2

For Conroe DDR2 667 (I used to scream for DDR2 800) is all you need if you're not or just overclocking a small amount.
