Total: £1,064.90

I went with the MSI non-external exhaust GPU’s for the sake of noise reduction. My biggest concern at the moment is whether or not the PSU would be enough, considering there will be SLI, and it will have 3 hard drives pulling from it.

To the stickied questions:
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
The most demanding thing will be gaming. Though it is will be used for everything.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
~£1000 but any savings would be great.
3) Where do you live?
UK
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
CPU, Motherboard, RAM, GPU, Cooling, Case, PSU, Optical Drive
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
Hard drives (3*SATA) and peripherals (mouse/kb/speakers/monitor)
6) Will you be overclocking?
Yes but not pushing too hard.
7) What size monitor do you have and/or plan to have?
1680*1050 – 22”
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
~1 week.
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? etc.
SLI, either strait away or for later.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If so, what OS? 32bit or 64bit?
Win 7 64bit.

Thanks!

As long as you don't OC past 4Ghz, that PSU will be just fine for your planned setup.

However if you don't need a modular PSU, go for the Corsair 850TX or 950TX which will be close to the same price to the 650HX IIRC.

GTX 460 1GB SLI is a waaay overkill for a 1680x1050. I'm more than willing to bet that a single GTX 460 1GB will be enough.

Im looking at a very similar build after being pointed here by danny (thx), so can i just ask where you purchased these from, as they are better prices than i found at my local stores.

Thanks for the advice Dan. I’ll probably go with the larger PSU.

As for the SLI 460’s, I wanted to be able to have smooth game play on newer FPS’s with everything turned up the max (Crysis, Metro 2003). I may try getting one now then another later, can’t hurt to test the water first.

Michael, all those prices are from www.scan.co.uk . The prices have changed ever so slightly since I last looked e.g. the 930 has gone up by ~£2, as has the MSI 460. As long as they haven’t agreed to sponsor an event, they’re pretty reliable : )

My only real pickle now, is down to the i7 950’s price slash. They’re only *just* above the price of the 930’s (£213 vs £234) so naturally I’d get the 950, but I can’t find a D0 stepping as I can for the 930. D’oh. So is a D0 stepping 930 likely to beat a non D0 stepping 950, when it comes to light’ish overclocking.

All i7 950 CPUs are D0 stepping.
