Would this be a big preformance upgrade (for gaming)? If it isn't now, I can see it being useful in the very near future. Considering games like UT2004 are just begging for 1GB RAM.

1GB of RAM is plenty for right now. You definitely dont need 2GB and wont for a while to come. If you were doing heavy encoding or rendering then 2GB would probably help, but if you aren't doing something that requirs more then 1GB of RAM then having 2GB doesn't make the system any faster.
 
Not sure which UT2k4 you're playing, but with AIM up, winamp playing, and UT2k4 running, i don't break 512mb. It gets close, but 512mb is all you need for it. I do have a gig though. Only game I've played so far to use more than 512mb is Planetside, but I'm sure there are others.
 
Not to mention they don't make 1 GB sticks and there is performance decreases when you fill all four DIMM slots on most motherboards.

Are you sure about that dude?

There ARE 1GB sticks. I think they even have 2GB sticks now. And the 875p ideal configuration according to the Intel spreadsheet thing is to have all 4 DIMM slots full.
 
1gb is all you need for gaming. 2gb is prob a waste for gaming. Now running a server/encoding/decoding is a different story.
 
The only problem is the cost

2x 512 MB is cheap.

2 X 1 GB is not cheap.

I am too, 14 months is an odd number. I was thinking about a year, but that's just a gut feeling. There really is no way to predict this though. A game could come out in a couple of months that really likes MORE than a GB and we wouldn't necessarly know about it today....
 
I'm hoping the RAM prices go down a bit in the next 2-4 months and then I'm getting another Gig for my XP machine.
 
thats why you keep an extra stick handy, and when you wanna play that game, just stick it in, and play...:D :D
 
I plan to get a near top of the line computer in the next few months and expect it to last 3-4 years with just a video card upgrade. Do you think it would be worth buying 2 GB of RAM? I'll only use it for gaming.
 
No, my basic plan when I get a new system board is to upgrade the RAM and video about 1/2 way into it. The RAM will be cheaper when you actually need it. Right now 1GB is plenty for most people.

unless you buy a top of the line system it'll be hard to strech it out that long for games. i'd say it's probably not worth buying all that memory now. to put things into perspective, 4 years ago the piii was barely to 1 GHz (and nobody could find them in stock) and 128MB of memory was ~180 a stick. A near top of the line system back then was a PIII 800, 128MB of memory and a geforce DDR running windows 98.

wait until you need the memory before buying it, regular DDR will drop in price a bit over the next year or two before they stop making it.
 
I bought 2GB mainly due to my business revolves around photoshop. If you dont use photoshop, 3dsmax, maya, or any other 2d/3d apps then get 1 GB.

Wrong on both counts - Intel chipsets rock with 4 slots filled [you can check reviews at www.anandtech.com] and there are 2GB sticks out, even.

I do alot of work in photoshop and 3ds max and i only have 1GB. If your business involves running those applications then yea i would get 2GB. I dont need 2GB for the work i do though which is primarily modeling for PC Games like Morrowind.

Mad_Pyro, thanks for jumping in. I may not be very knowledgeable on old or discontinued hardware but I am pretty sure filling the slots don't slow the computer.

I like to use 2GB of memory in WindowsXP because I turn off my swapfile. This speeds up my computer. (Maybe it is in my head, but I think feel it speeds it up).

I have a gig now, I'll go to 2 once the prices get down to around what I payed for my twin set in November. It was 235 then, I'm not paying 257 now.

I need it for photoshop, as well as scientific imaging.

As far as games go, I don't think they need more than a gig really, plus the performance hit you usually take going to 2 probably doesn't make it worth while anyway. Usually the timings get sloppier.
 
I would get 2GB now, if only to say "Dude, I've got 2GB of RAM," because then people will bow down at your feet and grovel and say things like "I wish I had 2GB of RAM" or "I bow down to you, oh lord of RAM"

But seriously, I have 1GB now. As they say though, "You can never have too much RAM or too big a hard drive." Get the RAM now if it doesn't bust your wallet, you'll thank yourself for being 14 months ahead, if you believe what people post here.

I would personally go to 2GB if it wouldn't bust my wallet, but my computer only has 3 DIMM's, so I would have to buy one of those expensive 1GB DIMM's to get to 2GB - oh well, 1GB suits me for now.
 
I'm going to stick with 1GB for now because thats more then enough for gaming and applicationi usage that i do. I may buy another gig after prices fall as they should some with the release of DDR2 on the market but i dont know. They might go up instead lol. I need to find something anyways to fill up some of these 6 DIMM slots i have on my motherboard.
 
RAM plays a greater importance for database applications. For instance, we upgraded our two ES7000 servers to 32 Xeon processors and 32GB of Ram. (Yeah, I know... I'd love to run a UT2K4 or BF server on it too.) I know the DBA's would love to get some more memory on both machines.
