1) What will you be doing with this PC?

Gaming and word processing

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?

$1600-$2000 delivered

3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.

Brooklyn, NY

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.

cpu, mb, ram, graphics card, heatsink, fans, case, ssd, hdd, psu, keyboard, mouse

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.

Monitor (somewhat old, will replace later)

6) Will you be overclocking?

no

7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?

For now it's fairly old (no digital connections) but will be replacing with a current model a few months down the road (undecided on which)

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?

soon

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.

No specific requirements here, just the most bang for the buck

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?

No, will likely go win7 (want to avoid win8) and prob pro since I want to RDP to the machine.

I've looked at cases a bit already, considering the Antec P280. I'm more used to Intel than AMD, though not opposed to either if it makes sense.

When exactly will you be upgrading the monitor?
What's the resolution of your current monitor?

The above determines what GPU you should be getting.

Could you reach any of the Micro Center stores in NY or NJ? They have some in-store specials that NewEgg can't beat. For example, for the rest of the month of November, you could grab the following (using the Long Island MC store as reference):

$170 - Intel Core i5-3570K (in-store loss leader)
$80 - Asus P8Z77-V LK (on sale plus instant $40 discount for purchasing alongside the i5-3570K)
$30 - Crucial Ballistix Sport 2x4GB DDR3 1600
$26 - Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus (a good CPU cooler in case you want to overclock in the future)
$190 - Crucial M4 256GB SSD
$100 - Seagate Barracuda STBD2000101 2TB HDD
$16 - LG GH24NS72 SATA DVD burner
$74 - Antec HCG-750 750W PSU
$58 - Cooler Master HAF 912 ATX mid-tower case
=====
$744 - Subtotal (not including tax or rebates)

That's most of your internals (save for the video card and extra fans) for less than half of your total budget. And you could easily find a 23- or 24-inch 1920x1080 monitor plus the rest of the parts that you need at Micro Center. For example:

$160 - Samsung SyncMaster 23.6" 1920x1080 monitor
$380 - EVGA 02G-P4-2670-KR NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670
$110 - Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit OEM
$30 - Three Cooler Master R4 Series 120mm case fans (at $10 each)
(Plus the above components)
=====
$1424 - Subtotal (not including taxes or rebates)

In short, you can buy all of your parts at Micro Center and still have plenty of money to pick out the keyboard and mouse of your choice.

I know that you prefer the Antec P280 as your case, but the Long Island Micro Center store didn't have it in stock. Is that a "must have"?

Yes, I can get to Microcenter.

I'm home for the holiday this weekend, so I can't get to the monitor to check stats easily. It's seven years old and analog, though. I can probably include a monitor in this budget if the old monitor is really going to hold me back, but if I wait and do it in a few months, I can put this entire budget towards the build. I'll do whatever makes the most sense.

Re-read the rest of my post. You can easily add the new monitor in with the rest of your build.

I saw your post, I was responding to Danny Bui's request for information. I am considering changing my mind on the case to one that Microcenter has in stock, to save all those shipping costs. I'm going to look through all the links you listed once I'm back from the holiday.

Revisit this thread about a week before you're ready to buy. Some of the Micro Center deals may change during that time.

Think I'm gonna run out to Microcenter tomorrow night, actually...

RAM links says they no longer carry it, not sure if that's accurate or not.

Also, I'd like a modular or semi-modular power supply.

I recommend this PSU and RAM:
$30 - G.Skill Ripjaws SeriesF3-14900CL9D-8GBXL 2 x 4GB DDR3 1866 RAM Combo
$140 - Seasonic X650 Gold 650W Modular PSU

So while we're in the store picking everything up, someone else buys the last cpu before our sales guy actually goes and gets it for us. So we ended up having to go with an AMD core instead, they literally had nothing else comparable from Intel in that price range, and we didn't want to wait when we already had the rest of the stuff to buy and build that night.

My question now is if any of the other stuff from this build will cause an issue if ran with an AMD core instead of an Intel one? FX8350 and an Asus M5A97LE

There won't be any compatibility issues... but what does the rest of the build look like?

Besides the processor/motherboard combination, what other deviations did you make to the build I recommended earlier?

16GB ram instead of 8
LG Blueray burner instead of the standard DVD burner
Corsair HX650 modular PSU
Gigabyte GTX 670 (were out of eVga)
They had the P280 Case so I got that.
