15k SCSI for games?

How much faster will games like UT2k4 load with like an 18GB 15K 8MB SCSI drive (probably Fujitsu or Seagate) over a WD1200JD? I'm considering getting one anyway since I do video work, but I was wondering if it would help in game loading times much also. I've Googled and found benchmarks on various SCSI drives, but I can't seem to find much that benchmarks with games.
 
Well, most scsi drives don't go into game systems, mainly they go into servers, so they benchmark them accordingly, 15k scsi will give a great performance over a 7200 rpm ide drive no matter how you look at it.
 
It sure will be an improvement but cost vs performance i'd go with a 36GB raptor
if you do it, please write a good review :)
 
my old gaming system
dual p3 933
1.5gb ram pc133
15k 36gb 16mb IBM u320

was able to load any game faster than
anyone at any lan i went to
it was the slowest hog on playing
vs the guys with xp3200 systems or FX-51's
or P4 3.2+'s
but they were all running 7.2k drives
7.2k sata or pata has NO chance
in comparison to a 15k drive
a 15k 18gb is the same price as a 36gb 10k raptor
 
The SCSI drive will load much faster than a Raptor or IDE based system.

I use a 15k Cheetah drive. In a P4 1.9 system. I have been on one system with a 36 gig Raptor drive. It was a AMD 2500 or so. I was not impressed with the performance of the drive. We play MOHAA. I beat all the people I play against into the game.
 
Not impressed with the raptor or the cheetah? Looks like you were talking about the raptor, but I can't really tell. I'm looking into a 15k os and game drive for my rig so more opinions would be great!
 
I've got a Fujitsu MAS3184NP and an LSI U160 controller on the way, will let you know how it goes.
 
I run 2 15k.3 Cheetahs in RAID-0 but I don't play many games, so I couldn't tell you if there's an improvement. Sandra says I move 119MB/s though, so I suppose any sort of disk usage would be markably faster than a 7200RPM drive.

I was not impressed with the performance of the one system I have been on that had a Raptor in it.

From what I noticed about it. The Quantium Atlas 2 10k drive I have in this computer with 98 on it was faster. This is a 5 year old drive to.

same setup, two 73gb 15k.3 drives, amazingly fast... like, so fast... wow...
 
I my self have only ever used SCSI for my gaming systems. I do not have a 15k drive, but
I do have 10k drives and I am usually the first on a level in any game I play because the load time is faster. I do not have any bechmarks to prove it though, sorry.
 
Okay, well, I don't have any real benchmarks done, but now I'm loading Jailbreak levels in 4-5 seconds... HUGE improvement over my SATA drives...

Time for SCSI cd-roms and burner. Its fun being able to burn cd's and play games at the same time. I use 5% CPU when doing burns. :D

You are not limited to leaving SCSI devices in your computer case. They can be exterinal mounted. My cd-rom and burner are on my desktop setting under my printer. The computer case is in the footwell of my desk.

The Atlas 10k drive I mentioned earlyer is not my only SCSI drive. I also have a Cheetah 15k-2 with windows XP on it. I use a IBM 15k for storage. I have been full SCSI based for 3 years.
 
Yeah man, I got this drive and now I can look at SATA drives and be like PFFT.... It's spoiling me already....

I used to run full SCSI but not anymore. There are extremely few SCSI peripherals on the market which really limits your choice, and the choices you do have are generally slower than their IDE counterparts at 3x the cost.

Don't get me wrong. I used to have the Plextor UltraSCSI CD-ROM and a Toshiba SCSI DVD-ROM and run full SCSI, but these days I don't find the IDE overhead to be a big enough concern to give up the number of options I have with IDE.

For my external devices I just run Firewire or USB2. I prefer their smaller cabling to the monster cable that is SCSI.

It would be nice if Serial Attached SCSI breathes new life into the format but I'm not holding my breath.
