1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
Gaming/Web Browsing/General Use. He's not interested in Photoshop or anything like that.
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$1500 - Shipped
3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
48420, USA
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
The case and everything in it. CPU, PSU, RAM, HDD (SSD), Mobo, CPU. The parts are being shipped to his parents place over Christmas. He's going to get keyboard, monitor, mouse and headphones when he gets back.
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
N/A
6) Will you be overclocking?
He says he won't right away, but this will be his first custom build PC. He said he would want to after he's comfortable with it. I told him how easy the new Intel's are to overclock.
7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
1920x1080
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Today, if possible.
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video? etc.
He doesn't use any of that, if anything I say he will need SATAIII for a good SSD.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
He will need an OS, Win 7 HP 64 bit would work.

These are some notes of mine:

He will be playing: Battlefield 3, TESV: Skyrim are the 2 major ones. He will also be playing others like Diablo 3, Torchlight. He's also in the US National Guard, so if he can get a military discount somewhere that would be great.

I'm between these motherboards - MSI P67A-GD53, MSI P67A-G43, Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3, and Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3.

I want him to have an SSD in this build if possible. Crucial or Intel.

I would like to stick with Corsair/Seasonic/Antec for a PSU, I trust them and have had great luck.

He doesn't want a flashy case, he's a pretty simple guy. He likes clean lines/dark colors (Black).

I think whether we got Nvidia or ATI and are able to squeeze in crossfire/SLI support will determine motherboard.

He says he wants the i7 2600 and/or k-version, but I'm not sure if he needs that much.

Let me know if you need any more information, I should be able to provide.

EDIT: Formatting and updating some answers.

Hi!

Perfect. Love spec'ing these kinds of systems. I'm building the newegg cart now -- will post it in a few :)

Out of the mobos you listed, I recommend the MSI P67A-GD53. CPU wise, for gaming, there's little to no real world difference between the i7 2600K and i5 2500K. So stick with the 2500K.

$225 - Intel Core i5-2500K CPU
$130 - MSI P67A-GD53 Intel P67 ATX Motherboard
$30 - G.Skill Ripjaws Series F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL 2 x 4GB DDR3 1600 RAM
$290 - eVGA 012-P3-2066-KR GeForce GTX 560 Ti 448 Cores FTW 1280MB PCI-E Video Card
$110 - Crucial M4 CT064M4SSD2 2.5" 64GB SSD
$136 - Hitachi Desktar 7K1000.D HDS721010DLE630 1TB SATA 6.0Gb/s Hard Drive
$105 - Corsair 750TX V2 750W PSU

Total: $1026 plus tax and shipping

If your friend still want to spend the leftover cash, go for a second set of that 8GB RAM set and up the SSD to the 128GB version. Or even grab a second GTX 560 Ti 448 Core.

Thanks Danny for your recommendations Any reason to not just go up to an ATI 6970 or a GTX 570/580 rather than another 560?

I think the 128GB SSD will be the one that goes in. Thanks agian.

Going out for a little bit, I will be back later to answer more questions.

Well definitely not the GTX 570 as the GTX 560 Ti 448 Core provides 97% of the performance but at 85% of the cost. So the GTX 570 is a poor buy for the money from that perspective.

As for the HD 6970 2GB, my main issue with that is that right now Skyrim and BF3 don't exactly work 100% well with AMD GPUs. AMD and DICE have slowly been improving the performance with AMD GPUs so there's that. But if your friend doesn't want to wait for the improvements, then a Nvidia GPU is your best bet.

I only recommend the GTX 580 if you're going for a balls to walls build.

Thanks. He's going to be building it, he just needed some help piecing it together.
