So if I want to upgrade from a Sapphire 4870 to an XFX 5770, I know I will drop the bit rate to half. I want to know from you all if this will be a downgrade for me or if I can continue to play on my 2560x1600 well enough?

Crysis?
 
The 4870 and 5770 are very similar performance wise, if your 4870 could do it the 5770 probably can just as well.

However, why would you be upgrading from a 4870 to a 5770? While the 5770 has DX11 it's not going to be powerful enough at 2560x1600 to really make use of it, and otherwise the cards are pretty close with the 4870 being a bit faster sometimes.
 
Kind of depends on what you are wanting to play. My 4850 handles MW2 at 2560x1600 perfectly on all high settings.

4870 and 5770 offer very similar levels of performance.

Also, just because the memory bus width is halved doesn't mean the memory bandwidth is necessarily halved also. In this case the 5770 delivers 76.8GBps compared to the 4870's 115GBps, which is slightly more than half thanks to the 5770's higher memory frequencies. You are correct that the reduction in bandwidth could affect you in high-res situations, though.

Nice links btw. It's kinda what I thought. The reason for the idea of the 5770 is the $100 less I would pay for the 5870.

Wait, either you're finding a really expensive 5770 or a really cheap 5870. If it's the latter let me know where you found it :D
 
I just bought an XFX 5850 for $320. Should be a small upgrade, but give me the perks. I would crossfire it, but I thought this when I bought my board;

"I won't ever need a crossfire setup."

2560x1600 eats memory bandwidth for breakfast. Since you'd be losing a substantial amount of bandwidth going to a 5770, it's a downgrade. I wouldn't get a 5770 for 2560x1600, ever. Grab either a 4890 or 5850 or wait.

Good purchase, you'll be very happy with the 5850. The 5770 is a nice mid-range card but won't be able to cope at that res with recent, more demanding titles. One of the pitfalls of owning a 30".. you pretty much have to go big on everything. But it sure is worth it :D

5770 is a fine card for 1680x1050 and below. Not really for 1920x1200 and up. With AA it really shows 5770 weakness. Bandwidth! Although clocked higher than 4870 it still lose to 4870 by an average of 10% in actual games. Probably more so with AA than without.
 
2560*1600 really that much better than 1920*1200? o_O And cuddos on the 5850 buy... I would of just told myself "whats another 100 bucks" and gotten the 5870... but then again I guess we all have different wants. o/c that beast and compare.. im sure the 5850 will be pleasing.

Well, 2560x1600 is almost double the pixel count of 1920x1200, so yes it is quite a difference.

He said he has already bought a 5850, that's why I couldn't understand why that was a downgrade...
 
I'm running a 5770, and it's great. I'm only at 1920x1200, but can crank everything and keep good framerates, (but I don't use high levels of AA.) I would think at 2560x1600 you would definitely notice the bandwidth limits though.

I very much disagree with the guy saying 1680x1050 and below, but agree that at 2560, you should think about grabbing a 5850.

I imagine the 5770 is certainly capable. But I think what they are saying is a 256 bit card would probably be a better idea when you get into the higher resolutions with AA.
 
I have to give you all credit. A thread with no real arguments. I am impressed. And you are gave real world ideas on this. We are evolving. :)

The 5970 was a real close runner. Go REAL big and go home. But, to be sensible, the 5850 should rock.

Maybe next gen for the double GPU. Maybe even double die GPU?
