10tb HTPC Setup?

Currently I have 6.5TB but it is full. I am getting tired of how much heat my HTPC puts out and it's kind of annoyingly loud for livingroom use.

I was thinking maybe of setting up a NAS and just getting something small factor for an HTPC to play to TV, but my router is in the living room anyway so the nas would still be in the living room.

Looking for idea's and suggestions on the best way to go.

I currently have my primary PC, my primary HTPC/NAS machine, and 2 HTPC's in the bedroom's which just play off the collection on the primary HTPC.
 
With that much storage, definitely separate NAS and HTPC IMO.

With that said, you sure you can't hide or string a long ethernet cable or something from the router to a server in another room/closet? What's the specs of your current HTPC/NAS anyway?
 
Or check out MoCa adapters. I get 90mbps sustained transferring between a room upstairs and a room downstairs.

I live in an apartment so unfortunately not much options in the way of wiring :-/

My current system is just a core 2 duo @ 3.2ghz with 4gbs of DDR2. Does the job just fine though, no lag. I use WMC on all 3 machines and works fantastic. Using a 4k series with HDMI to my tv (50" Samsung 720p). Slew of random different hard drives, including 2 0 raids (2 1.5tb drives, 2 1tb drives, etc).

I do too and it hasn't stopped me from having a seperate HTPC and server. Mine is in an Antec 300, I can fit 12 HDD. :)
 
I fit 6x 3.5" drives and 2x 2.5" drives in a SG06 case... that can give you raid1/0 OS SSDs and up to 18TB of storage in a nice compact form factor... only need a small psu (thus small amount of heat) as well (2100t or i3-530 is plenty of horsepower, hell, a e350 would probably be enough if you didn't stream netflix).

I use power Ethernet adapters. I get 100 mbps which is plenty to stream any blu-ray rips.
 
I've never had a problem streaming 1080p via 802.11n using 5.8ghz and 40mhz width mode.

I connect at 300mbit and get about 100mbit with it.

Server, HTPC PS3 and a desktop are all wired. Bedroom desktop and laptop are wireless N. Works perfectly in my apartment and I didn't have to run any wires.

So then your server, htpc, ps3 and desktop are in the same room? So how would that help me? lol.

Yeah... along with a TV, a reciever and some chairs.... what's your point? :rolleyes: The server is headless and the only interaction it needs is through remote desktop and it's quiet like a church mouse.

The server sits in a cabinet, behind the TV with the switch, modem and wifi bridge; under the TV sits the receiver, HTPC and my PS3... you know? Where you'd typically find those kinds of things. :rolleyes: Hell, I could even drop the PS3 onto wifi and in another room or just sell it (I hardly use it).

I wouldn't be that hard for me to move the server into a closet, plenty close by without some unseemly wires laying around. Then again I'm not lazy and don't care to half ass something just cause it's hard. I've reconfigured this room when I need too. :rolleyes:

So yeah, I really don't get your "point."

Maybe you should read my original thread which is about heat and noise being in my living room and nothing to do with anything you just mentioned. :rolleyes:

My htpc is headless (hooked to TV via hdmi), on my entertainment center, and IS loud and creating a lot of heat. IE what I am looking to solve, IE nothing you mentioned is any kind of help or solution.
 
Did you address the suggestions to use powerline or MoCa adapters? I live in a duplex and the MoCa adapter is exactly what was needed to eliminate reliance on wireless between the two floors.
 
Well the powerlines could be your solution. I tried them back in the day and wasn't too impressed with the sustained bandwidth as it's related to the gauge of wiring. New Apt complexes will have better wiring which will give you less interference / bandwidth. Bad wiring / Old Apt complexes might not behave as well.

However, you can remove the overhead within SMB by moving to NFS for your NAS giving you more bandwidth to stream. It's going to be a toss up between powerlines and 802n. Technically there's more bandwidth with the powerlines however bandwidth is more stable going wireless. However you'll probably reach it's cap if you have more than 2 or 3 HTPC frontends going at the same time. It's going to be a toss up. But I think 802n with NFS will give you the best combo.

I don't understand your problem. You seem to be able to get your files from the living room to the bedrooms. I don't see why you cannot put your NAS or whatever in a bedroom next to the PC there.

My HTPC has 11 hard drives. It appears to be quite and not very warm (certainly not hot). Perhaps you should just build something that is reasonably quite and cool.
 
Everyone has a different definition of quiet. Quiet to me is 'I can't hear it at all'. Just like a cable box or Blu-ray player.

There's no way a 11 disk PC is quiet.

Most of the drives are spun down most of the time. They only spin up when playing. Simple Windows setting.

Not sure if interested or not but when the ATT UVerse guy came out he had to run 2 Ethernet cables from one side of my apartment living room to the other so he just pulled the edge of the carpet up and ran it underneath to the other end. You could probably do the same.

Umm so are the drives in the HTPC 7200 rpm or lower spinning drives? I have a DF-85 case with 8 Hitachi cool spin (low rpm) 2 TB hard drives and never hear a peep from them. Otherwise like others suggested you will need to change your airflow so that less rpm more air = better cooling and less noise.
 
hmm just bought 4 2tb drives and was unsure if i should buy a nas or buy a new case to fit the drives..thanks guys for the case suggestions
