...

Return to Castle Wolfenstein. End of story. It's not too hard, and it'll run on any computer 500 MHz and up.

Or... get him some Mario Bros. happening on the NES.

battlefield 1942, cs 1.6, c&c generals off the top of my head i used to play those on my own dated rig..

Get him started on offline SP games. This way he doesn't get owned online and not want to contnue on.

I've noticed that alot of the "older" people I know adore WWII games, So MOHAA would be a decent choice. Or if his comp is up to the challenge, CoD/BF1942

What is it with Dads and Beachhead?! Mine too!!

Mine really enjoyed Wolfenstein.

i second the suggestion for WW2 themed games.

I third it. I know of a few older teachers I've had in the past who got into gaming mainly due to WWII games.

My father loved the Descent games, Duke Nukem, D00M and Wolfenstein as well as Commander Keen.

Since it's an old computer, I highly recommend Unreal Tournament G.O.T.Y edition.

Why??? There are a few reasons...

1) It was the 2nd online multiplayer game I ever played (first being Quake 3) and it lasted me 4 years (until Unreal Tournament 2004 came out). I played on it almost every night!

2) My mums ex boyfriend didnt use to play games but he saw me on Unreal Tournament and showed some interest. I put him on the game, showed him the basic controls and he to played it for 4 years straight (stopped when Unreal Tournament 2004 came out).

You can find Unreal Tournament really cheap now and many people still play it online. Offline mode is great but the game is really great online. It doesnt require a fast computer either so I recommend this!

start slow, do some 2D

then DOOM/Wolfenstein

Follow by quake1, that will take a while, 3 weeks methinks

after quake1, the best single player fps in existence: Half-Life 1

and after half life, you can do all the other shooters

for strategy, start with warcraft2/Command and conquer 1/2

New starters should really get aquainted with the more complex games in singleplayer, I'd suggest some decent single players first (farcry, hl2, doom3, fear for FPS)

When playing multi i'd suggest starting on less elitest games, play any kind of quake, UT or CS and you'll not find a server with enough n00bs on for a first time FPS gamer to get any kind of enjoyment out of, they're just far too elitest.

Definatly try out some coop games, SWAT 4 is neat coop, svencoop for HL and sven coop2 soon for HL2, theres loads of other decent mods with coop.

Finally move onto multiplayer games online and introduce CS style games later on when he will have enough skills to jump into a server and actually do something other than constantly die.

RAYMAN 1 no question. then up him to mechwarrior 2. then, go anywhere. cod 2 sounds good..but his computer probably won't play it?

Yeah uhh... are we limited to first person shooters here? Or any game? You said gaming, but most of these suggestions are PC FPS games.

Aww dammit. Looks like the onboard video in that old piece of junk just isnt going to cut it....COD demo won't even work, it's not compatible.....*sigh*....i'll try to convince him to fork out the cash for something cheap......

ValeX

and would he not be interested in Diablo 2? that runs without 3d acceleration

starcraft starcraft starcraft Brood War... my starting game into the PC world....

I second StarCraft...I would also suggest Worms World Party, one of my favorite games of all time!

Definately start him out with some single players on the FPS front. Otherwise he'll just get frustrated and quit when he gets owned by people 1/3 of his age online.

My suggestions?

Deus Ex (should be nice and cheap now)
Soldier of Fortune 1 and 2
any of the UT series (the bots should be good training before going online)
CoD
XIII
HL/HL2

Some other genres:
C&C series
Sim City 4
The Sims 2
either or both of the CSI games
Law and Order CI
Neverwinter Nights
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004
Some EA sports games (Madden and Tiger Woods Golf should go over well)

Oh, and get the man a decent gamepad and a flightstick.

Oh, and if onboard video isn't cutting it, pick him up a gf 5xxx pci card (or a cheap AGP card if the PC has an AGP slot, obviously) and another 512mb of ram. While anyone on here would probably turn their nose up, for him it will suffice. He should be able to run most current games at least in low detail.
