Building a PC for my cousin, he finally came into the cash he was due so he wants to build within a few weeks. I asked about this earlier when he mentioned it, but he just wasn't ready to build anything then. Thanks for the help :D

CPU, Ram, HDD, Video card(s), motherboard, Blu Ray or DVD drive. Unsure of Power supply yet. Most likely won't need a monitor, and won't need keyboard + mouse

No, need a 64-bit OS.
 
SLI is complete over kill for any single monitor setup, much less a monitor with only 1680x1050 resolution. I don't think he will even notice a difference in SLI with that low of a resolution to be honest.
 
If you aren't overclocking, then the i5-2400 is probably a good choice. Pick an MSI P67 motherboard and 8GB of RAM to go with it, and then either a GTX 560 Ti or a GTX 570 for video and you'll have a good core setup. How big a hard drive are you looking for?

Overkill, but it depends what you are using the computer for. However, given the low, low price of RAM nowadays, it isn't a terrible value for the money. But it is doubtful that mainstream uses will require that much RAM in the near (2 - 3 year) term.
 
16GB of RAM is definitely overkill. But considering that DDR3 RAM prices are soo low, I say get it if you have cash to burn.

Ended up getting it for him. At only like 45 bucks more then 8g was hard to go wrong...

Plus his last PC he kept for 6 or 7 years and just did upgrades to it so at least ram wise it'll be future proofed.
