1 terabyte DVD??

I've been out of the loop on dvd storage,and did a google on a whim if there is such a thing,apparently there is???? Are there actually a 1 terabyte dvd one can use to back up a hard drive with???
 
Have they developed a 1TB optical disc, yes. Is there one generally commercially available, no.
 
There are ALWAYS countless numbers of new optical storage methods being developed, most of which never make it to market. If you're lucky more than one of them hit the shelves and you have yourself a genuine HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray battle.

I'm sure at some point we will see consumer level optical media with terabyte capacities but I doubt it will be within the next few years.
 
Current Blu-Ray capacity is 100GB (dual layer double sided disks). not really much need for anything higher at this point. Once the need arrises, technology will step up to the challenge

I have to disagree with this particular point. They have been trying to get 1TB/disc optical working in a commercially viable fashion for quite a while. First were the holographic plans and then the TDK UV. Imagine a backup drive the size of one of those Sony 400DVD changers, with 1 or 2 internal drives. 400TB native per enclosure and you could put 4 enclosures in a standard 4U rack tray. 1.6PB of backup/HSM space in a single 4U pullout tray would be a hugely disruptive technology in the backup space and giving you 5-10x the storage density of tape (physical media space), with a non-contact random-access (per disc) medium. That would be something I would love to see.

^ they have not worked out the kinks yet and this has been admitted to by the people developing it. Sure a 13 layer disk is great but is it cost effective and reliable and at this point it isn't. When the demand starts to show up (people actually wanting it) they will figure a way to make it work.

IF you really need to back up a terabyte of data, an external HDD or NAS is the way to go imho considering thet hdd are far cheaper than some new form of optical media (not to mention at least 15-20x faster at data retrevial)

As I said, the demand is there (and has been for quite some time), they are always "2 years away from commercialization" regardless of whatever format they are talking about. If you just need to back up 1TB then a hard drive is fine. If you need to backup hundreds or thousands of Terabytes, then something like I mentioned is far superior in both storage density/sqft and in ease of physically offsiting your data.
 
I think the most important development in optical storage is M-Disc which really allows to archive important data.
Yes, its only 4,7GB and the medium costs real money but with 2discs I can archive all my important pictures and memories.
