Okay, this is definitely the feel good story of the day. Kudos to the Mercedes F1 team on this one!

Mercedes where so touched by Matthew's ''intelligent and moving letter'' they agreed to help him and teamed up with firm Touch Bionics, who create and fit hi-tech artificial limbs. Together they designed his own customised i-LIMB Pulse - the most advanced prosthetic limb in the world. The hand is so versatile Matthew can grip a pen to draw pictures and write, tie his shoe laces and catch a ball.

LOL Mercedes were "touched" by Matthew! Well, now they really CAN be!

One step closer to chopping off all my limbs and replacing them with prosthetics!

...never mind the phantom pain.

Happy for him though. He's got the coolest hand in school!

On a more serious note...it says he wants to play sports with the other "lads" now; how secure is that fastened, will it take the shock of a bat hitting a ball? Because if so that's pretty damn impressive. And don't get in a fight with him!

though phatom limb pain only happens when you actually lose the limb in distress. If it was surgically removed while knocked out then there shouldn't be any pain.(which is more than i can say for my current limbs, concert is not your friend children)

I am sure he is glad it was from Mercedes and not Chevrolet or Chrysler.. or any place from China!

If I ever needed a Bionic limb, the first thing I would do is tear the fake skin off of the thing. I would rather have a terminator type limb, than an obvious fake.

i-LIMB? Steve Jobs and his lawyers will be at his house to take that arm soon.

After they're done, tomorrow they'll over a new hand called the iHand. It'll cost twice as much, but offer twice as less feature as the i-LIMB.

Wow! Awesome! Very cool thing for Mercedes to do. +100 kudos! :)

There's more German made products in a GM then there's American made products. My C5 Vette has "Made in Germany" on the center council. My Saturn L-Series is really a Opel Vectra, with an engine designed in Germany, but built in England.

You're comparing Apples to Apples. The problem is when car parts are made in Mexico or China. I think Fords Newest Mustang's manual transmission is made in China and has loads of problems.

I was wondering if the batteries go dead, in the middle of watching porn, does it feel like your hand went to sleep?

though its muscle controlled not brain controlled sadly, but still pretty neat.

newsflash, guess what controls those muscles ?

All the current "mind controlled" tech that I see today actually implemented real world aren't "intelligent" at all. They merely scan for generic electrical activity in the brain, from say, 10 sources.Certain electrical patterns are assigned a function (such as move up, move down, etc) and the user has to "teach" it to know which are which. In no way do those devices "know" what you're thinking, and are easily confused.

You might be able to teach it to turn left when you're thinking about "turning left", but it could easily be confused into doing the same action when you're thinking about "spaghetti sauce", simply because the electrodes could be picking up similar waveforms.

Basing the movements off of muscles (or in this case, likely small portions of muscles at the tip of his arm as well as ones going up his arm), is much more accurate as those muscles are receiving a focused signal to do *something*. This artificial device can than base it's own response off those muscles instead of trying to swim through a veritable ocean of electrical signals that the brain is sending out.

We are no closer to artificially telling(or reading) the brain to do a precise, specific action as we are to traveling to Alpha Centauri.

It is, it's a getrag transmission manufactured in china with some pathetic syncromesh materials. You should see this one thread on one of the forums. It will take you over a week to read through all the posts...

On the plus side I get good fuel economy and the harder I drive mine, the smoother the shifts LOL(It's bittersweet irony).

On topic. the fact that the technology for limbs is that far is impressive. And a really good PR move by Mercedes.

Made by Mercedes? So does it come with a short four year warranty and then promptly have issues thereafter?
