New computer time, help me out?

Hey guys, I apologize in advance for probably the 40000000th thread with this same intent. I'll be straight up; I used to be computer crazy, built all my PCs etc...but the last 5 years with work and family I am totally out of the loop. My computer is getting a little long in the tooth and I want...

Yes, it's another help me out building a computer thread...

Gotchya. So it seems like if I want quiet I will need to go for either a GTO, which is impossible to find, or something less than a 7900. Hrm, choices. :)

I don't mind drilling; I was more concerned with silence - the solo seems to be a popular choice over at silentpc, which is why I put it on my list. I will check out the centurion though. Word over at silentpc is the 7900gt is loud. I wish I could find a GTO.

You guys rock, you just helped me make a lot of decisions, particularly the video card and PSU, which were really vexxing me. How does this card look? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130065 Seems like a giant hsu/fan, but hey if it works, it works. Any better...

Hey guys - so my wife's computer is finally so outdated that I'm going to get off my lazy ass and upgrade my computer, and give mine to her! :D Problem is, with work & life I've been out of the computer hardware scene for awhile, and find myself feeling like my dad must have when he got his...

    New Poster Design...

I think it's excellent aesthetically; definitely eye catching and I like the sort of monochromatic way about it. I guess the only issue is how easy/hard is it to read. For me it's no problem, but you know how some folks are. :)

Ah, thanks - actually for the purpose they serve (my car detailing business) I want the bright reflections. That said, I have been wondering how to eliminate that for personal photos. I appreciate it. :)

    Another request: corporate logo.

Hey Guys - I am trying to create a new corporate logo for my small business, I basically have the idea however I do not have the talent to do the design and am unfamilar with local desginers (plus I'm familar with [H]) so I thought I'd post here. No, I do not expect anyone to work for free...

Time for a laptop, I am lazy, so give me some guidance.

Alright thanks guys. I shouldn't have said I am lazy; I'm not. I've been doing a lot of reading and I see what you guys mean about big screen + power = mediocre battery life. Regarding the screen, 17" would be more than enough I think. I'm so used to 20+ I was all wigged about going to 17", but...

Time for a laptop, I am lazy, so give me some guidance.

Sad as it is, with job, wife, etc... I've been out of the computer scene for awhile now and find myself pretty lost, especially regarding laptops; I figure that's what you guys are here for, right? :) So my current computer is finally feeling a little slow and outdated and I want a laptop...

Konica Minolta 5D or Nikon D50

Wouldn't that be attributed to the lens then? I have felt some "cheap feeling" Canon lenses, mostly the inexpensive kit ones. Actually our 50mm F1.8 (the one everyone has), that costs $50 feels pretty light too, but it's $50. Then again our 100-400 feels like it could withstand a bomb blast...

Konica Minolta 5D or Nikon D50

Question - what's up with the general concensus that the 300D/350D have poor build quality? Is it just the fact that they're plastic rather than metal? I'm just wondering - we own two 300D's (one for ~3 years one for a year) and both have been rock solid mechanically and otherwise. We use the...

Good tutorial, although I agree with others that it looks a little over-exposed. I use ps for all my photos, but try to keep them "as original" as possible, whatever that means.

Recovering files deleted over a network?

Long story short, something got deleted that shouldn't have. I know when files are deleted over a network (win xp) that they bypass the recycle bin - do you guys know of any way to recover them? I figure they have to go somewhere. When the folder was deleted it just vanished, no "deleting.."...

Computer on Plasma TV: Hook-up Questions, Need readable text

I've been using a 4th gen Panasonic Plasma as my computer display for just over 2 years now. No burn in yet, including the taskbar. I used to get image retention the first couple weeks I was using it, but that went away after ~ one month. Image retention is a ghost image that looks like burn in...

    Looking for a 42in HDTV

Has anyone here even seen a good EDTV displaying an HD signal? Seriously, sometimes the EDTV propoganda really makes me wonder what online rags you're reading to determine that they will "look like crap". I own both an EDTV Panasonic plasma and a HDTV Panasonic plasma and if you could tell them...

Am I doing damage to my eyes?

It's only bad to watch any television/computer screen in the dark because it forces your eye to dialate a lot more often and a lot more rapidly, which gives some people headaches. If you don't get headaches then don't worry about it.

OLED (Organic LED) what are we waiting for?

Not offhand sorry. I'll take a look at work tomorrow. You don't have to believe me or anything, but that is what's most panel makers are doing right now (or experimenting with anyway). Just to toss my guess into the hat I'd say we'll see 20-27 inch OLEDs in mass production by the end of '07, but...

OLED (Organic LED) what are we waiting for?

They've only been able to make the blue's last as long by combining reds and greens to make longer lasting, but less true blue phosphors. Essentially they're sacrificing picture quality for enough longevity to make them halfway feasible in the consumer market. All the hype about better pq than...

    Dell’s UltraSharp 2005FPW widescreen 20-inch LCD monitor.

One dead pixel that you don't notice and minimal bleeding? I'd keep it for sure - the odds of getting one that is superior is very low. You could try and then ship back the replacement if it's not better than the first, but I don't think it's worth the time.

Why you should stay away from Viewsonic and the associated RMA hell

Shit, sorry to hear about your bad experience. I bought two VX910's early last year and one of them had a faulty DVI input. Called Viewsonic, had them send an advanced replacement with a shipping label for the return - the end. Weird that we had such different experiences.

    Dell’s UltraSharp 2005FPW widescreen 20-inch LCD monitor.

A class action lawsuit regarding an issue like this would be laughed out of court. Don't be silly. Return your monitor and grab another LCD with your $400. Odds are no matter what you buy it will have backlighting issues. Maybe not like the Dell, but they will be there. I have 4 LCDs on my desk...

Just fyi my second one got here today. Both had estimated shipped days of 5/19, both shipped before, and both were 1 day air because I called asking what the status of my order was. So for those of you worried about timing, give Dell a call, act concerned, and get a free upgrade on shipping...
