I brought 2 desktops to college (the one in my sig and a AXP 2200+ Shuttle). Big mistake. It wasn't a matter of space, it was a matter of wasting time. Next semester I am just bringing a laptop.
As for the whole "you don't need anything" idea... well, bull! My parent's suggested it and it...
Alright, another random question (since it's the end of the semester all my friends are buying new computers). For somone who doesn't game much, (like goes to maybe 4 or 5 LAN Parties a year, and hardly ever games at home) is the Segar 3790 a good idea. She told me she plays UT2004, CS:Source...
I have a friend who needs a gaming laptop. Is the ATI X700 Mobile any good? I have heard from some that it's just an X300 Core in a laptop, but from others I have heard it's like a Radeon 9800 Pro. What is everyone's opinion on this card and how will would it be paired up with a 1.8ghz Pentium M?
I am faced with the same problem you have right now. I decided that I am just going to stick with what I have for now considering that it runs almost everything just fine.
My plan is to wait a few months for prices to drop before I do an upgrade.
Well, I'm mostly worried about the first floor and basement getting wireless. So maybe I'll just hide a WAP behind my TV or something. :D
The only computers on the seconds floor are in one bedroom and the home office.
Yes I know how to wire CAT5, and I actually have a WRT54G so I might use that. Thanks guys, keep the suggestions coming.
As for the server, I think I am going to use Windows 2003.
Within the next 6 months or so I plan to be moving to a new house. Since we'll be spending a few weeks fixing the place up before we move in, I figured I may as well wire the house for Ethernet. My question is, how much would it cost (for cables, face plates, and stuff) to wire a three story...
I have a linksys WRT54G that I use as a Router/WAP. A few days ago I noticed that the router was no longer getting a DHCP lease (I live in a dorm, and yes I checked we are allowed to use Wireless routers as long as we use WEP or MAC Filtering). So I have been using a Static IP setup. Does...

I got a Lite-On DVDRW SOHW-1633S for Christmas and I just noticed the other day that it will burn DVDs just fine, but it is unable to burn regular CDs. Aren't DVD burners supposed to be able to burn CDs as well?
Alright everyone, I am a server admin for Pittco and we have a huge LAN (200+ people) coming up and I need to find a way to run enough CS servers. Does anyone know of a guide online for admining CS and CS:Source servers? I mostly did UT2004 in the past, but now I have to cross over because...
Microsoft tech support finally got back to me. Turns out I was an idiot and had about 5 instance of the Intellipoint software installed. For some reason when you upgrade the software, it doesn't uninstall the old version. Well I deleted all that stuff and now it works fine.
w00t!
No I...
Mushkin 184 Pin 256MB DDR PC-3200 Basic Green - Retail $31.26
SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9200SE Video Card, 128MB DDR, 64-Bit, DVI/TV-Out, PCI, Model "100565L" -Retail $53.00
Comes to $84.26 Not bad for an upgrade like that. But yeah the memory would give you an all around performance...
I assumed since it was a POS dell (My parents bought one for their home office, nothing but problems) it only had 2 PCI ports or something like that.
If it has an AGP port, use it.
I saw on NewEgg a Geforce FX 5700LE PCI, anyone know if that is any good?
I say stick it to the movie/music industry and force them to make CDs/DVDs cheaper, and make the actual content better. What if the general public went on a music/movie strike, when they don't buy anything from the, and don't steal anything from them. What will the RIAA and MPAA do then? Sue...
Yeah, that should help, upgrading the video would help alot to. You can get a Radeon 9200 PCI pretty cheap. I think the Video card would be a better upgrade over the memory though.
For a few dollars more at NewEgg you can get an 80 gig hard drive. 40gig ones really aren't worth buying anymore because the 80s have gotten so cheap. You might want to also think about going SATA if your board supports it. (which I'm assuming it does)
Tried that, still nothing. Same problem, mouse works for like 3 seconds and then nothing. The mouse light is still on too, it seems like it should be working, but it's not. I've tried this on 3 different mice.
Updated chipset drivers, still the same problem. The mouse works for about 3 seconds, and then when then "Your hardware is ready to use" thing comes up, the mouse stops working.
I found one called HID Input Servic, I Googled it and it appears to be the same as Human Interface Device Access. The service is started and it automatically starts, so the service has been running.
I never had the Intellimouse Software installed.
Any other ideas?
I also booted up in...
I am trying to have two mice installed on my computer (both USB, don't ask why it's a long story), and for some reason every mouse except for the one I've been using (Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer 3.0) works for about 3 seconds and then stops.
That's how my device manager looks with...
!bump, anyone?
I e-mailed Microsoft tech support, but I doubt they'll help. Belkin said it was a Windows problem.
Why do I always get plagued with the weird problems? :(
If anyone knows what would make a USB Device work for a second and then stop, please let me know. I have servers to configure and I can't start until I fix this problem.
I tried plugging in another USB mouse and it works for a second and then stops. This is without the KVM, plugged directly into my computer. Arg... I hate stupid problems like that.
It's memory, I delt with that all summer at work. Dusty computers, dust blockes a few contacts between the socket and memory stick. Re-seat the memory, and you may want to blow out the memory sockets.
Alright, I got a Belkin USB KVM for Christmas and I was trying to connect my Windows box and Linux box together and I cannot get the mouse to work. I tried Belkin tech support and they said it was because I was most likely using Generic Mouse drivers in Windows (I haven't emerged KDE yet on my...
I see, yeah I figured this isn't something they'd teach us until Grad school. Weird how ACM puts it in a contest that is mainly undergrad Sophmores and Juniors.
btw, the development environment we use is PC^2 (basically bastardized Xterm) with either Pico, Vi, or Emacs. And were are very...
