I just got Logic Express as an "upgrade" to Garageband.
Small problem with Logic - it only lets me select one CoreAudio driver, and then seems to insist on using that for input and output.
I like to record through my interface but monitor on my iBook's headphone jack - in Garageband it...
All the Core Duos on Newegg ATM are Socket 478... I was under the impression that LGA775 is a newer socket type than 478. So why are they putting out their best chip with an old school socket that many boards don't support? Someone please shed some light on this as I would love a Core Duo.
My friend and I are planning to write some custom software for our school over the summer. We are of course going to be compensated for our time and effort.
However, we definitely like open source and free software, so we are looking for creative ways to license it that ensure we are...
Hey guys,
I just formatted a 12" 1.33Ghz iBook G4 with a backup of my old 800MHz... I already copied the Scrolling Trackpad driver from the stock install image to get that working.
Now, however, I am trying to get the Apple System Profiler to show that Sudden Motion Sensor is supported on...
Hey guys,
I have asked my question here and on MacNN.com and received mostly blank stares... I also tried the #macosx channel on freenode. Any more suggestions for where I might get a conclusive answer? I am trying to find out if I can replace my (dead) 800MHz G4 iBook motherboard with a...
Hey guys...
Long time no post.
Anyway, today, randomly, my iBook (see sig) randomly started freezing up. Literally freezing as in mouse, clock and other stuff just stops moving. For about a week I've been having to reboot it because "Mac OS X quit unexpectedly" (don't believe me? I took...
I'm considering getting a PSP as a portable media center (big, gorgeous screen), so I'm wondering... how many 45-minute TV episodes (scaled to the right resolution and bitrate for the PSP) have you guys been able to fit on 512MB and 1GB memsticks? How does the MP4 codec compare to things like XviD?
I'm looking to build a computer controlled mood lighting system for my room using LEDs.
I came across many USB-IO chips and boards, but I don't know if they are adequate...
My initial setup will involve 64 LEDs (4 clusters of 4 LEDs of 4 colors). I keep seeing that all these boards take...
Remember my iBook G4 with the black keyboard?
It got an 80GB hard drive when the 30 died last week...
and clear blue plastic model paint on the Apple logo and sleep LEDs
I was going to just use blue cellophane, but then decided that with paint, I could make it all swirly and...
I know it says "Standard Cat5 cable is not recommended for 1000BaseT distances over 25 ft" in the FAQ, but...
My house is wired with a ragtag assortment of Cat5 and Cat5e. How much speed loss can we realistically expect across a Cat5 segment measuring ~110ft? 500-600mbps or less?
Hey all,
I had a server (specs in sig, "Dumpster") running happily on Debian with GRUB.
Yesterday I bought a Silicon Image 3114 chipset PCI SATA card and compiled a new kernel with the driver. I also bought two Maxtor 250GB SATA drives.
I installed the drives and rebooted. The...
I recently found and fixed a 233mhz beige G3 tower. The machine has 384mb of RAM and I put in a 40GB drive so the machine would be usable under OS X for some tasks, I wanted to use it as a Linux box.
Being a Debian user, I downloaded "debian-testing-powerpc-netinst.iso", burned it to CD-R...
Whenever I run the Tiger installer, it says
"BaseSystem cannot be installed on this computer.
This software cannot be installed on this computer."
And the installer log says:
"Apr 28 19:35:00 : Mac OS X Installation Log
Apr 28 19:35:00 : Opened from: /Volumes/Mac OS X Install...
So I'm trying to use my iPod as a Firewire hard drive to boot from.
Anyways, I Carbon Copy Clone a perfectly bootable disk to it, set it as the startup device, and reboot. The iPod thinks for a second and the white background with the grey apple logo appears, but after that everything just...
Hey everyone,
So I have a Zoom X5 ADSL modem/router (http://www.zoom.com/products/adsl_overview.html) .
Now, I recently bought http://miazmatic.com and am hosting the site on a Linux Xbox behind this Zoom modem.
Anyways, when I'm at school or anywhere other than behind the router, my...
I'm getting ready to sell two useless desktops and buy a Thinkpad X series notebook for Linux. As it stands I will end up probably making a total of about $500-$600 from the sale of the two desktops.
Thus the only X series notebooks in this price range are the low-end X20/X21/X22s.
At this...
I currently run an Apple iBook G4 as my main mobile system. It's great and does everything just fine, but I've wanted to try a Thinkpad running Linux for some time.
Anyhow, I'm quite interested in the the Thinkpad x21... they can be had for 300 to 500 bucks, and without the CD base are about...
I have made my iBook unique without voiding the warranty. Here are some pics for y'all:
Hope you guys like it. Looking to replace the Caps Lock and Num Lock lights with blue LEDs eventually, and get a bigger 5400RPM hard drive.
EDIT: pixorz on imageshack
I know the whole story how Linux for Apple hardware doesn't support Airport Extreme and Kismac can't use it in monitor mode, both because Broadcom refuses to write Linux drivers.
Now, I was feeling [H] the other day and wanting to put Linux on my iBook G4. Now, before I run out and buy a USB...
Today at school someone broke my Sony MDRV150 headphones, which I loved to death. Anyway, I'm looking to replace them with something of similar or somewhat better headphones. These are used primarily for listening to iTunes on my 12" iBook at school, and I'm really not looking to get an amp...
I used to have a PCI GeForce 4 MX440. Laugh at me, pity me, whatever.
I upgraded to a 5900xt @ 425/700. Now all my other games run so much better at mostly the highest settings (except D3, duh) but Battlefield 1942 v1.6 runs a lot slower than it did on the old card. It lags and about every...
I'm going for Athlon 64 this Christmas.
I'm in 9th grade and I don't have a job, therefore must rely on mom to buy stuff.
Christmas is coming. My mom usually spends around $300 on me each Christmas.
Anyway, I've pretty much figured for the price ceiling for chips is the Athlon 64 3000+...
I have an 800MHz iBook G4. It only has 256MB of RAM (more coming for Christmas), and I'm running Konfabulator. When that and iTunes are running, Safari and Adium becomes slow and I get Rainbow Wheel.
I've already removed the speed cap on Safari to make it load quicker, but the interface...
I'm running an Albatron KX600 Pro (pics) in a mid-tower Riadmax Scorpio case.
I'm getting to upgrade ye olde Athlon XP 1900+ to an XP-M 2600+. I want to overclock it to around 2.4GHz, but still have a cooling solution quieter than my current $11 Coolermaster aluminum shitheap.
I'm not...
For our next LAN party, my mother (yes, you read that correctly) had a really good idea which I've since implemented, but only on a small scale.
Basically, we've used Alcohol 120% to image all the discs we need to run games onto the file server. We also have a primitive database of CD keys...
My iBook G4 800MHz has not been into the AppleCare Shop since I got it, a nice change from my old G3 500 iBook.
Anyway, it's having a weird tic.
When I close the lid, it goes into sleep mode. This is meant to happen.
Sometimes, when I open it back up, the Sleep Mode light turns off...

Somone just gave a board (1.6GHz Pentium 4, 512MB RAM) with no case or hard drive. I want to use it as a dedicated Halo/Quake III/BF1942 server.
I'm trying to pick a case for it. It's mATX and I...
I have just inherited a Xylogics microAnnex els.
It's a 16 port switch. It also has one more ethernet port that looks like it could be removed, as well as an AUI transciever that also looks like it comes out.
Any of the "regular" ports I plug it into, nothing lights up. However, I plug my...
My friend dropped $700 on a Compaq Proliant PL590, only to find out that he couldn't get Windows Server 2003 under the machine license because the PL590 was only released to developers.
Anyway, the thing has two 800MHz Intel Itaniums and we're wondering what a good OS would be to run on it...
As payday draws closer, I've almost decided on my new card.
Until now, I've been an nVidia kind of person but am unbiased and don't mind making the switch either way.
So, then, what is an nVidia card that preforms similarly to the 9800Pro?
As per this graph, it looks like the Geforce...
Ok, current PC specs are so:
1.6GHz Duron (unlocked to AXP1900+)
Albatron KX600 (up to 400fsb)
512mb PC3200
64MB PCI Geforce MX 440
It sucks, I know. Anyway, I have $150 to throw at it. I've narrowed my upgrade down to two options:
Powercolor 256-bit Radeon 9800SE ($144), hope and...
I thought I was off the habit end of last year, and I stayed clean, but today someone asked me about folding.
I get home and start piecing together old boxen once more.
Here we go again...
(Pointless thread, meant to show that someone who just worked off the addiction can get bitten...
The R9800 Pro has slightly better framerates, but is also a few $$ more. They both must have 128MB as I can't afford the 256mb model of either.
I want to run Doom 3 and Farcry at reasonable resolutions (High-quality, 10x7or 8x6).
There's also the option of softmodding a R9800SE into a...
I just got a Viewsonic 21" monitor from a friend. Then I ran the Doom 3 on my GeForce4 MX440 (64MB PCI). Needless to say, I'm now in the market for a new graphics card.
Now, back when I had my 15" monitor, 1024x768 or even 800x600 would have been fine, so I was planning to get a GeForce 5700U...
