I disagree, there are plenty of excellent products made from vendors other than Cisco that have the same, if not more features and cost less than Cisco.
That's one way to say it... another way to say it is that "Cisco makes it's own standards and then forces the rest of the industry to adopt...
If you want to control the traffic from the PCs to the server, you can put them into seperate VLANs and setup extended ACLs.
If you want to control traffic between the PCs too you will probably need to define a VLAN for each physical port. That would mean setting up 25 subnets and several...
The domain controller policy only applies to the DCs. I would not modify it. I added a few things to it like auditing and such.
The domain policy is used to set policies for the entire domain. The only thing I use the Domain Policy for is setting the Password policy, lockout policy, and...
Use a proxy server and force it to the clients with a GPO. I disabled direct internet access using Access Control Policies on the firewall (Netscreen-25).
I use ISA server with SquidGuard Blacklists (imported as Destinations Sets) and then use Proxy Inspector to run reports on usage. I...
Turn off automatic caching of redirects and disable caching of the share folder.
Here are the settings that I use for everybody except laptop users:
Computer Settings
At logoff, delete local copy of users offline files Enabled
Prevent use of Offline Files folder Enabled

Backups? Volume Shadow Copies?
I have tried some server based undelete software before and I never had good luck with it.
Too bad the recycle bin doesn't support network drives (except My Docs).
What you would want is to have two servers (both being domain controllers). Ideally, each is configured as an Active Directory Intergrated DNS server. You can use Root Hints or Forwarders, it wont really matter. Have one of the servers also act as the DHCP server. Turn off DHCP on the...
That's why you have a secondary DNS server. DHCP shouldn't be an issue at all. What is the lease time vs the time it takes to reboot?
You do have another DC right?
host.domain.xyz is the FQDN. If the clients can't ping the DC via FQDN and they are unable to get the proper SRV records from the DNS server, I don't think the clients will get to the SYSVOL........
Picture a building with 100 ethernet cables that drop from the celing, have RJ45's on them and plug into a bunch of switches. Then somebody has a problem and you need to figure out which cable has the problem. It's not very easy... is it?
With a patch panel, each port probably has a number...
Does the script work if you run it as a user?
Did you put the script in the SYSVOL?
Can your client PCs ping the SYSVOL by FQDN?
Are the clients getting getting the GPO (use gpresult to verify)
Have you run gpupdate /force /sync /boot on the clients (if XP)?
Another vote against Roaming Profiles, they are more trouble than they are worth.
Folder Redirection is the key. The only useful folder that GPO's doesn't redirect is Favorites, and that can be fixed with a Regedit in the login script.
Also refining the Default User and All Users...
YOU NEED DNS!!!! Active Directory is DNS based. It uses SRV records to finds Domain Controllers. Unless the DC can register the all of the SRV entries, your clients are going to take forever to login. Not to mention, things like login scripts & GPOs aren't gonna work correctly.

Get the newer ADM's from an XP-SP2 PC (%windir%\Inf)
Those new settings will probably only affect a PC running XP-SP2.
True, but my FDU's have the correctly colored Pigtails fusion spliced to the individual fibers. If I look at the splice pack, I can see all the yellow pigtails to tell me that it's SMF.
Also check out CleanSlate.
GhostCast is okay to use but there are too many things that can go wrong when setting up scheduled tasks like that if the OS is 2000/XP and it's on Active Directory.
You can also use Folder Redirection via GPO to set their Desktop and My Documents (assuming...
I've got one at work (replaced a T1 to the internet) for surfing. I'm not that happy with it. I found it doesn't like SurfBoard 3100 or 4100 cable modems. It's auto sensing ports are very poor quality and caused most of the problems.
The firmware is buggy and keeps changing (removing...
