Abusing a range extender as wireless link to modem?

Solved this issue by just replacing the router in the basement with a newer (AC 1900) router. Seems like both the 2.4 & 5 GHz WiFi bands are having little trouble punching through the reinforced concrete between the basement and apartment, so all is good :)

Abusing a range extender as wireless link to modem?

I guess I can answer my own question there already: From: https://superuser.com/questions/1294567/how-can-ap-work-without-having-ip-address-assigned This then means that the single IP from the ISP would end up at the router after the Modem -> RE1 -> RE2 -> Router route. Only compromise is...

Abusing a range extender as wireless link to modem?

Yeah, I'd have a much newer router (Asus RT-AC68U) acting as the router in this configuration. The two REs would literally just work as a bridge to get the signal to the router in the apartment . You mentioned the single IP address, and that's one thing I'm not entirely clear about when I use...

Abusing a range extender as wireless link to modem?

There's coax everywhere, but tragically it doesn't run to the basement as it goes to the plain ol' antenna on top of the building. Only easy to way to do anything cable-based is to run Cat-6 through the stairwell, which would have to be discussed with the landlord. Doable, but adds fuss that...

Abusing a range extender as wireless link to modem?

With the installation a requirement to run fiber into apartments was to have a dedicated path prepared, which there wasn't. I think the phone wires also come in that way, but this place was built originally for pole-based wiring, so from the basement it first goes to the top of the building...

Abusing a range extender as wireless link to modem?

Since the goal is just to get a kind of wireless backhaul, I figured that it might be sufficient. There's basically the (concrete, rebar) floor and some (load bearing?) walls between the fiber modem in the basement and the apartment. It's probably not more than 5-10 meters when drawing a...

Abusing a range extender as wireless link to modem?

Due to circumstances and a rushed fiber internet installation at my (rented) apartment, the freshly installed fiber modem ended up in the basement, with a highly inconvenient way to route Cat-6 between the ground floor apartment and the fiber modem (lots of drilling & running cable through...

When will Video Card prices come down lower?

Looking at the automotive market, multiple sources are projecting an easing of the supply there second half 2022. This includes ICs, but also other components like capacitors and other small stuff. Many manufacturers of cars and other products have been hoarding as much supply as they could...

Graphics Card Autopsy - MSI 980 Ti "Golden Edition"

After reading the thread so far I feel glad that I went for an AIO-cooled MSI 980 Ti, quality PSU (Seasonic 660p), in a case with plenty of airflow. I do have a hot air rework station, but swapping MOSFETs in those annoying SMD packages is not my idea of 'fun' :) Also RIP for the 980 Ti that...

How often do you replace power supply?

Got the Seasonic 660p running since 2015 in the same 6700K rig I built it into originally with zero issues. Pretty sure I have never replaced a PSU, only repurposed them. When PSUs often come with warranties ranging from 8-12 years, that tends to be enough time for it to firmly obsolete the...

The new "died in the line of duty" thread

Those would be the SMART values reported by the SSD's firmware, so one might assume that they're somewhat close to being truthful. Though we all know how reliable SMART is in general, especially when it comes to reporting imminent disaster :)

Did a bit of a tour around the world, working at a job in Germany, and did job interviews around the world, even visiting the US a few times, too. Currently slacking off as a freelancer :)

I'll have to brush up on my knowledge, I notice. Guess I do have a few things to catch up on after being away so long :) I figured RPis aren't great for F@H, since last I remembered GPUs were the cat's pajamas, and Cortex-A CPUs aren't exactly known for being performance houses.

I'm doing a lot of software development on RPi boards and kin due to a project I'm running (NymphCast), so if those are efficient platforms, I could maybe run those as DC rigs when they're not being used for testing or compiling. That'd be interesting :)

Hello, Just wanted to drop a quick message that even though I have been AWOL/MIA for a while, I'm currently back to lurking on [H]. Haven't folded in a while (8+ years...) mostly on account of the astronomical electricity prices here in Germany (did some moving). If I ever move to a country...

My Titan X started on fire!

If you are going to put that card back into a system to try and flash the BIOS, at least for the sake of all that's precious, use PCB cleaning fluid to remove the carbonisation and other gunk off the board to prevent random stuff from shorting out.

Microsoft Warns Windows 7 Has Serious Problems

Windows 7 still has over 50% marketshare and Microsoft is obligated to provide security fixes until at least 2020. I fail to see the problem here.

    DPC Latency, i7 6700k / 970 / Maximus VIII Hero

I had massive DPC Latency issues with my new Z170 build (see thread in Intel Mainboards section), which turned out to be caused by the Asus AI Suite III software. After uninstalling it DPC latency was back to normal.

Rumor: Xbox One Getting New Polaris-Based GPU

I think it'll be a while before we'll see a console able to match the performance of my current 6700K, GTX 980 Ti-based PC. There is the nice, integrated experience with consoles of course, but that can be as much a blessing as a curse at times. Even if Nintendo's NX console (to be unveiled...

Top First World Problems Include Not Having Wi-Fi Or 4G Service

Pits in a type of fruit. Common transparent tape, known as 'scotch tape' as well. Businesses in the UK are no longer allowed to give away free bags for groceries, etc., but have to charge the customer for each bag. The idea is that this will make people bring their own bags instead of...

    Rise of the Tomb Raider

I went by the screenshots and trailers I have seen so far. Obviously video compression and such may have made it look worse than it would look like while playing the game. I won't be buying this title, though. The story is so bland and uninteresting that I'll gladly skip it and just play the...

    Rise of the Tomb Raider

You mean the Tomb Raider reboot game? It looks fine for me with a GTX 980 Ti with everything on Ultra/enabled (including TressFX) @1440p... The new game looks about the same graphics-wise, though with less interesting environments compared to the previous one, but it may appeal to some...

Windows 10 Surpasses 200 Million Installs

MSFT lost any chance of getting me to upgrade to Windows 10 when they backported the privacy-invading 'telemetry' fluff and 'accidentally' upgraded Windows 7 systems to Windows 10 without asking permission. I'm running Windows 7 now with Spybot Anti-Beacon to weed out the telemetry malware and...

    Twitter Diversity Pick Stirs Controversy

Pretty much that. It's the part I loathe the most about this whole 'diversity' thing. To me the most important thing is always that the most qualified person is chosen, without discrimination on any ground. This clamouring for 'equal representation' is then disingenuous because just having...

    Windows 10's End-Of-Year Report Card

I have had Windows 10 available and within easy reach since last year, via developer preview ISOs and later the 'free upgrade' campaign. MSFT's desperation with said campaign illustrates quite well how reluctant people like me are to even entertain the notion of switching to Windows 10. And MSFT...

Critics Of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Blast New Film

I had to think for a while until I remembered that they did a new Battlestar Galactica series after the (cancelled) 1980s one. I lasted until the beginning of season 3 with that one before the religious nonsense and other fluff got to me. I hear the series got even worse after that :)

Critics Of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Blast New Film

Nemesis could be a lot worse, yes. Like JJ Abrams 'Red Deus Ex Machina Matter' bad :) First Contact is the uncontested best Star Trek movie as far as I'm concerned. Insurrection was... passable, but kinda predictable. Generations was unforgivable even when it could have been a cool idea...

Critics Of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Blast New Film

I completely agree. I love DS9 and TNG because of how their main characters and even some side characters carried the show through a wide variety of scenarios, ranging from serious, to very dangerous to emotional and joyful moments. All of that helps to make these characters into human beings...

New Skylake build, is it even worth it?..

I only installed AI Suite III because I was in a rush and just wanted to quickly flash the BIOS, even if it was done from within Windows... in hindsight I should just have copied the BIOS to a USB stick and done it the proper way: from within the BIOS itself :) I find that SpeedFan works fine...

Critics Of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Blast New Film

I don't disagree with that :) DS9 was the last Star Trek series which was just basically brilliant from beginning to end. I watched Voyager when it first aired and maybe it just grew on me. Watching it back years later I find myself skipping lots of episodes, like all the Fair Haven filler. I...

Critics Of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Blast New Film

As a Star Trek fan who had to watch on as JJ Abrams destroyed the last remnants of her favourite sci-fi franchise, I can only agree with these critics. JJ Abrams is a terrible director who doesn't seem to like or care about anything he directs. All he wants to do is direct cool action movies...

"For me" Win 10 is utter crap

As an occasional professional iOS/OS X developer, I am not shocked. The effort to keep a working development toolchain across updates on OS X is insane. So many things are broken or break (again) over time which are never an issue on Windows or Linux. The Control Panel in Windows 2000 was...

New Skylake build, is it even worth it?..

Fair enough :) The RAM compatibility issue on my Asus Pro Gaming mainboard was with the original BIOS (0302, IIRC), which I have since updated to the new BIOS (1102). Still, it seems pertinent to at least do a BIOS update on new Skylake systems if they are easily 10 BIOS revisions behind with...
