Sorry wirk, but the E5-2630 is 8 core hypertreding just like your E5-1680. So if you make your calculations I'll have 16 cores and you just have 8.
Although it is preferable for most applications to have a higher clock than the number of cores, this is not exactly true for a render engine...
This machine is going to be used for rendering CGI and post-production. There are some small details I'm not too sure so a little advice would be great.
Mobo: ASUS Z10PE-D8 WS
CPU: Xeon E5-2630 v3 2,4 GHz
Memory: Kingston ValueRam DDR4
PSU: Seasonic X-1250
HSF: NOCTUA NH-12DX i4
GPUs...
Here you have a list of Intels Xeon E5 v3 dual CPU's so you can compare them.

oh gee! this one is a [H]ard one, maybe I should open up a thread and ask for some advice
Concrete-core chokes and hardened MOSFETs seams to be a common answer
Well, no luck. I went back until the first driver upon release but still the same. So I don't relay understand what is going on. Maybe I have to format and do a clean install.
But what bothers me the most is that eventually the problem comes back. For now I will just boot into Windows without...
I found some great articles about Quadro Maxwell and AMD's latest FirePro. For my purpose I'll go with Quadro and still looking at the K2200. Seams they have improved a lot form the Kepler based K2000 or the Fermi. Since they cost almost the same (new not used) I don't see a point in going back...
runs2far I have not modified the mobo in any way. I used Qflash and tried to install the FD version, but as far as I remember it wouldn't let me. I don't recall the exact warning it gave me but I'm pretty certain it said something about not having enough space. So I went with the FC version...
Just restarted everything. Jeez did I sweat to get this SATA cable in the right spot. I had to take out my MSI Lightning GTX680, did some cleaning while I was in there and filed up some cooling liquid. Yes I know, it seams I'm talking about my car :D but I'm still talking about my PC.
So...
At first I took a look at the K620 but since my experience with the K600 was not to great the next step would be a K2200. So how far back should I go, Fermi based or older??
So I just found this wonderful review from Tom's Hardware http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-workstation-graphics-card,3493.html and this one which is about the same time http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/graphics/display/nvidia-quadro-amd-frirepro.html
I think a K2200 is not a bad idea...
No typo, the driver is Nitrous Direct3D 11 which is used by default. Your right, it uses the DirectX11 and you can chose Direct3D9, Legacy Direct3D and Legacy OpenGL. So right now I'm using DirectX11 via the Nitrous display driver.
So the fact is that my GTX680 is the exact same hardware than...
So I put together my PC during October 2010 and it has been running without trouble for years.
Specs: GA X58a-ud7 (rev 2.0) Intel i7 930 @2.80GHz Patriot memory 12Gbytes DDR3 1333LL Series MSI Lightning GTX 680
I have been overclocking the CPU and GPU but have stopped doing so...
I'm not trying to upgrade my GTX680 but a Titan X would be nice, especially for GPU rendering. My problem is that any GTX card does not have the Pro features from Quadro/FirePro. I need a 30bit able card with up to date drivers for all the above mentioned software. I found AMD to be better in...
So I have been at this for a while now, reading every thing I could find. Right now I'm running an MSI Lightning GTX 680 witch is based on the Kepler and has 256 Bit bus width and 192 GB/s of bandwidth. It also supports anything form CUDA to OpenCL, DirectCompute etc.
As a CGI artist I use...
Thanks! This is great stuff.
So I think it is wise to go with the Sabertooth and I'll see which PSU is cheaper even if it's only 5 bugs.
On the cooling solutions I'm still not sold, mostly because there are so many options here and it all depends on cases an mobo's. This is always a mess. On...
Great, so the Samsung it will be.
Yes, it is the ASUS P9x79 I had in mind, since I don't need most of the extra features like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. I had a look at the Sabertooth some while back but as it was a little more expensive I didn't see the point.
Dangman, what where the issues you ran...
Maybe I should start with an EVO and if I see fit I can always get a new one. Since I don't grasp the SSD world it won't bother me too much. Wit the cooler the clearance is the main issue, that is why I went with the H90. Because I don't need to worry about any of this. But I think going with a...
Great this helps a lot. So I will be going with the 8GB sticks and get 32GB, so if really needed I can jump up to 64. The PSU is definitely a concern and I had already a look at the Seasonic which I do like very much.
The SSD from Intel is a bit expensive, how about the 530 Series, would that...
The case is going to be a Cooler Master CM690 3, there is enough room for everything and it has a good price for 86€ = 119 US$
You are right about the RAM, it could be a wise move. As for games, it has been a while since I last played a game. I work to much so there is not really any time...
I am currently holding a Core i7 930 but now is the time to move up. Since I am a great follower of HardOCP and do read pretty much everything on her, I think this is the best place to get a definitive approval of my build.
1) What will you be doing with this PC?
3D modeling / rendering and...
Thanks, that was an option. But I'm not to happy with the Haswell because it has just 1 PCI x16 and I was going with 32 GB of RAM. Most people working in that business have about 16 o 32. Right now I have 12 GB and it's not enough, considering that windows wants 4 already. On top of that Haswel...
So it is time again for a new PC, mi three year old i7 930 is getting a bit slow. This means a lot of reading and looking around to find the right components. I work in the 3D content creation, so it has to be something powerful.
And this is what I came up with:
Intel Core i7 4930K 3,4GHz...
