OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

A couple quick things _Gea; -- For whatever reason the latest OmniOS would not work for us. We would continue to get an APD issue with our NFS shares. We had to go with OmniOS v11 r151010 and everything worked perfectly -- On the home > System > Network IB > ipib section the IP addresses...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I'm using 5,5U3, did a pkg update, and this server is a standalone Napp-It server.

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I've rebooted both of my ESX servers and this is still happening over NFS. iSCSI is working just fine. I am thinking of re-installing with an older OmniOS version tomorrow to see if that clears it up. We've been running 3 OmniOS/Napp-It installations and we only have a problem with an ESX...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I believe 5.5U2 fixes most of the APD issues. We are running into this with 5.1 on one of our servers with short APD issues but our 5.5U2 server has 0 APD messages in the logs.

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Hey _gea we are following your SSD build and I am wondering if you have to do additional over provisioning on the Sandisk Extreme Pros or if they are already good to go out of the box. Also, is there still an issue with over 128GB of RAM or is that still a soft limitation we should follow?

New log and cache SSD for ZFS

I put in a new backup ZFS Napp-It server and I am looking for suggestions on current SSDs for the logs and cache. Our original Napp-It server is using Intel 330's for mirrored logs and and Intel 520 for cache, but those are now older drives. It seems that some small 840 Pro/EVO or Crucial...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Interestingly enough the system and the UI are different. I can upload some screenshots if it would make a difference. It's nothing major, but it could cause someone to run lower on space if they encounter the same thing.

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Hey _Gea, I deleted some snaps yesterday because I am doing a lot of moving of VMs and they were taking up a ton of space. In the GUI they do not display, but if I do 'zfs list -r -t snapshot' I see the 3 snaps I deleted. A) is it safe to just delete these from a shell? B) any reason why...

    SAT2-MV8 hot swappale in OI/OmniOS?

Just to follow up to my own question here: OI/OmniOS works with the SAT2-MV8, but it does not initialize the disks automatically. I had to SSH in and issue a "cfgadm -a sata" to see the uninitialized drives (listed as connected and unconfigured) and then configure them with a "cfgadm -c...

    SAT2-MV8 hot swappale in OI/OmniOS?

I picked up one of the TAM Solutions 24 bay Supermicro servers off of Ebay to hold some cheap backup storage since going to tape was killing us time wise. The one thing I am running into in either OI or OmniOS (using Napp-It) is that the controllers aren't acting like they are hot swap capable...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

_Gea, is it safe (i.e. no reboot and no known issues) going from 0.9a5 nightly to 0.9d2 nightly? Since this is our production AIO server I am scared silly to change any configurations and especially do some upgrades. Can I spin up a VM of OI/Napp-It and download 0.9a5 specifically? I can use...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I just wanted to jump in here and give some real world production feedback on Napp-It and an AIO setup. Our server has been running for 242 days now and to date we have had exactly zero errors located on our scrubs. I am running Toshiba DT01ACA200 drives (24 currently) under a mirrored ZFS...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Hey _Gea, I have a question based on something on your tuning page. It says to use as many vdevs as possible and as many disks as possible but then it says avoid large vdevs. (Just a little confusing). In my production server (which has been awesome BTW) I am running mirrored vdevs so is...

ESX5 - Finding HBA cards in use

That was close, but didn't get me the PCI info I needed. For those interested this will help to get the right info: esxcfg-info Look for the VmKernel Device Name and you will get the Parent Device and Dependant Device along with a passthrough capable flag. It's a lot of output but you...

ESX5 - Finding HBA cards in use

I just finished my SuperMicro build with 3 M1015 cards in the server. 1 card serves up the boot drives with my Napp-It and vCenter VMs only. Another card is in passthrough to my Napp-It VM and I have the third card doing nothing. What I need to figure out is which device ID is the M1015 NOT...

Need recommendation for a prebuilt 40TB server

If you're really only looking at a 1 week retention then I don't know why you don't roll your own and save a bundle. Since your budget is about $16k and this isn't long term data then just grab the same SuperMicro case they used and go to town with some NL SAS drives and a good LSI RAID card...

Need recommendation for a prebuilt 40TB server

Are those 3TB drives SAS or SATA? Based on the initial post I would say look at SAS only drives due to the throughput needs and the dual channel nature of SAS drives. If you're looking for a 40TB storage server why would you be looking at OpenSUSE rather than have a dedicated storage server or...

Need recommendation for a prebuilt 40TB server

Check out Aspen Systems: http://www.aspensystemsdirect.com/servers/pc/Stratum-ZSHJ2208I-ZFS-SAN-p1321.htm They can get you 45TB of raw storage (enterprise class) with a ZFS server with 3 year 24/7 onsite parts for under $13k. We looked at them as a possible vendor before building a Napp-It...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Cleartext authentication Again, 0.8l3 doesn't have this issue going to the same server, so it has to be either a code change or change in the PERL module. Anonymous access worked fine so it's something with the auth. I'll stand up another test VM just to rule out some sort of environment...

_Gea, The mail request is obviously hitting the server so it's trying to send something. I am looking through the code now and I don't see any differences. The napp-it.cfg files are identical between the two servers. Running a telnet session to the server from my Napp-It box had no...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

Over the weekend it seems the web server stopped so how in OI do I restart the web services? I can SSH into the VM and it's serving up NFS just fine, but I can't hit the web GUI. Since this is now in production I can't just reboot the box.

    Storage Project - Dell 2950 + MD1000 or MD3000, need advice

Keep in mind that the MD3000 also requires Dell branded enterprise drives or it may not function correctly in RAID. They are locked to certain HD BIOS revisions. At the time our MD3000 was what we could afford, but it's been a big PITA when we needed some cheap bulk storage for backups and...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

If it's an AIO setup you don't need to assign any NIC to the vSwitch. You will need to assign a NIC if this is to be used by external (to the AIO box) machines though.

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

If this is an AIO setup you don't need to even assign a NIC to the iSCSI vSwitch. Just make sure you have a vmkernel with an IP on the separate LAN and it should work. I had that same setup just this last week doing some testing with my new AIO setup and it had no problems connecting via iSCSI...

Recommendation of a cheap production box

$1200 for a production box? That's going to be tough. You could go with something like this as a base for the build: http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=CA-815TR7U - $490 Stick with production level motherboards with ECC RAM. I would suggest SuperMicro for case/mobo and some 16GB...

    Build or Buy JBOD Enclosure?

You can't run the dual channel backplanes at the same time using SATA drives. Only SAS drives work with both channels connected, so unless you mean redundancy by physically swapping cables around then I guess you could argue that. I just finished a production build with the 36-bay chassis...

    Poor M1015 SSD performance

Just to follow up to my own issue, I tested last night with the ZFSGuru live CD benchmarking and it did show that the SSD drives and my planned configuration are both giving very good performance. I am not sure why the VMs aren't showing higher numbers but this weekend I am reconfiguring...

    Poor M1015 SSD performance

This is being mounted through NFS within ESX. Async is disabled on all 3 pools. I did try the SATA pool without SLOG and cache and there was a noticeable difference in write performance. Read performance was the same with sync=standard and sync=disabled. I have not swapped the M1015 with a...

    Poor M1015 SSD performance

I am still benchmarking my new ESX 5.1 Napp-It All-In-One and I am seeing horrible performance on my SSD drives. My hardware is as follows: Supermicro CSE-847E16 - 36 drive chassis Supermicro X9DR3-LN4f+ - motherboard Samsung ECC RAM - 192GB on the box with 48GB reserved for IO/Napp-It...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

The zfsbuild IOMeter tests take a LOOONG time to run doing the full suite, so I will probably trim things down and try to run more tests over the weekend with my current build. One thing that strikes me as interesting is that the SSD pool I built pretty much sucks in the performance arena. I...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

I'm running the zfsbuild.com IOMeter tests today and over the weekend. I forgot to disable sync on my first test and my 4 drive 7200RPM mirror was about half the performance of my 8 drive 15k RPM RAID10 array on our MD3000i. Considering the IOPS differences between a 7200RM SATA drive and a...

I'm going to give that a shot. The boot screen said IT firmware, but it could still be running the old IBM firmware. I'm getting the boot files together to do a mass flash of all 3 cards and I'll see how that works out. EDIT Reflashing the cards worked just fine. The IT firmware I was...

Need advise on tape backup for large home office data (50TB+growing)

LTO tapes are re-writable, but they are not like the normal USB drives where you replace just a single file that changes. They are not directly accessed storage like a hard disk or USB drive. This is the reason why you need some front end software (Tivoli, BackupExec, Amanda, etc.) to catalog...
