I currently have the Adaptec 51645 and I'm looking to upgrade my current raid array to about 8, 2TB drives. The 5K3000s look like a great price point and I'm happy with Hitachi, but I haven't heard much about using this particular model in a hardware-based raid array. Does anyone have any...
Any thoughts on creating a new sub-forum for ssd and/or platter-based drives? It would make it a lot easier to sort through.
A sub-forum for drive controllers wouldn't be a bad idea either.
I just got a deal on the i7 875k and the G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB 1333 and am looking to finally upgrade from the e6400.
I'm not looking for SLI (I'm just going to be putting my 9800gtx+ in there) and am indifferent about USB 3.0 (although they seem to have this more often than not). The...
I just installed the drivers for my Epson scanner, and I was wondering if there are any free alternatives to the built-in windows software. The only real thing that the windows software is missing is a quick copy button. I could try finding and installing the old xp software, but it never...
I'm about to upgrade my parent's computer from Vista Home to 7 Professional via the student upgrade deal, and I was wondering what the best route for this would be. It appears that I cannot go directly from one to the other.
Is it easiest to just use the migration utility, or is there a...
Does anyone have any ideas as to what would cause a different BSOD every time I try to install Windows 7 (64bit)? Sometimes it is 5 minutes after selecting the partition and hitting next, other times it doesn't even make it to the accept agreement screen.
I ran memtest and didn't encounter any...
After my second 680i board killed a set of memory (my first 680i killed two sets before I RMAed it), I've decided that I've had enough. What would you guys recommend? Just swap the board for something new (and what)? Or new board, mem & cpu (i7 maybe)?
My current setup is in my sig.
Edit...
My embedded alix setup just died after 7 months (yay :( ), and I've realized that for 20 bucks more than the cost of a new board, I can just go the Intel atom route (esp now that I have a switch that supports vlans).
What are your thoughts on this jetway, this intel nic, with this memory...
I have 7 new 1TB hitachi's on their way to be used in a RAID 6, and I want to make sure that I use an optimal configuration.
I'm currently using 10, 500GB drives in a RAID 6 with a 256K stripe on an Adaptec 51645.
The file system is xfs, configured as shown below:
tuckie@nibbler:~$ sudo...
Just received my order from zipzoomfly of seven 1TB 7K1000.Bs, and two of them have the click of death (with some beep sounds thrown in there), and aren't even recognized two different computers (why must the Deathstars continue to haunt me!). What would you guys do in my situation? I'm going...
I'm looking to go from 3 switches scattered throughout the house to one that's centrally located. VLAN support would be nice for some added flexibility down the road, but not a requirement. What would you recommend?
Thanks in advance!
I've been looking at getting a 13 (maybe 14) inch laptop to replace my 17 inch so that I can have something a bit more mobile for taking notes in class as well as a bit of gaming (nothing more processor intensive than WoW or HL2 engine based games). I'm looking at spending 1,000-1,500 or so...
Working on a setup for a friend of mine (having never put together a SFF system), and I just wanted to see if anyone saw any problems with this setup (or have any suggestions of any sort).

A friend of mine is willing to take this card off my back, so that he can switch to an sli setup. What card would you guys recommend for a little upgrade? Preferably something a bit more energy efficient. Thanks all in advance!
I've picked up an Adaptec 51645, and I'm wondering what size stripe would work best. I can choose sizes between 32kb and 1024kb. I would imagine that largest would be best, as I'm generally dealing with files from a few hundred mb to a few gb in size, but I'm not sure. The array will consist...
I've had a raid 5 setup via linux softraid for some time, using ext3 as the file system. I've finally picked up a hardware raid card, so I've migrated all the data off the drives, and I'm considering changing to a more modern file system (that would be better at handling large files). I'm...
Is there a vnc (or something similar) server that can run on my linux box so that I can view being played on it with a decent framerate? I'm looking at putting my linux box in another room, but still would like to have the mythtv frontend (accessed through windows). I've been messing with...
I've been looking at picking up a hardware raid card, and this appears to be significantly cheaper than others with similar features.

Looking at getting a new laptop, and have been eying up the dv2845 at best buy, it comes with the AMD TL-62, I'm also considering an xps1330, which comes with core 2 duos, so I was wondering what the equivalent to the TL-62 was.
thanks in advance.
I currently have the ga-m61p-s3 running in a home server of mine (great due to integrated video out). I heard that some boards only like having video cards in the 16x slot, and others have no problem with other equipment. I was looking at purchasing a raid card so that I could have a hardware...
Does anyone know if there is a parameter that I can use with xming to remove the "are you sure you want to close this" dialog when exiting? There is a simple option with PuTTY, and I'm hoping that there is something for Xming. I would to make it a bit more portable-friendly (I have a script...
I was just curious as to why only some of the articles that appear on the front page are linked to the comments section of the forum. Shouldn't all articles be created with a corresponding forum thread?
So I'm trying to fix a computer, that "stopped working" (endless reboot loop @ windows loading screen) when the plugbar was switched while it was on (thats the story I was given). After running an extended test, it gave error code 0223. According to to western digital's site:
223 Errors...
I currently have 5, 500GB RE2 drives in a raid 5, which are all WD5000YS models. Looking at Western Digital's site, I see that they have a few newer models. The complete list is: WD5000YS, WD5000AAYS, WD5000ABYS, and WD5001ABYS. Would there be any problems going with a newer model, or would it...
mpja has a great deal going on cat 5e, but there's a 15 dollar min order, so to reach that, order six :) 6x2.95= $17.70.
Shipping to my area (mid Michigan) was $9.17.
Total = 26.87 shipped for 300 feet of ethernet.
I'm trying to get some data back for a friend of mine, and i tried out the eval version of diskinternals ntfs recovery, and it was able to get back a large chunk of the data along with the folder structure and names. Other software that I've tried only saved a raw dump of all the files without...
I have a bunch of poorly named files, that either have underscores, have extra information in brackets "[dont need this]" or like "(this)" at the beginning and the end of the file names, or need a dash inserted before the number in the filename. What I would like to do is run the filename...
I'm trying to figure out how to split the output of a shell script to two separate log files. One that just has the last line that contained the phrase "encoding task" and the other that contains everything else.
command 2>&1 | tee | grep -v "Encoding: task" >> /var/log/encoded.log grep...
My 3rd gen ipod is getting a bit long in the tooth (and short in the battery life, and a broken hold and rewind/previous switch) so I'm looking at a replacement. I've been out of the loop outside of hearing about the new iPods and Zunes, but I've heard problems about both. My 20gb isn't enough...

Its been happening every so often lately, when I do a cold start on my computer, I'm getting the C1 (memory bad) and sometimes the -- error code on the led readout. I've been able to get it back up using by first removing one stick, boot and shutdown, put then put in the second stick every time...
I've gotten tired of ghetto rigging old psu's to test various circuits, so I'm looking for a cheap benchtop variable power supply that supplies around 0-25 volts @ 1-4 amps. Display is optional, but would be nice (I can always just hook my multimeter to it). As for cost, 40 bucks would be my...
I'm looking at wiring up two standard c9 (IIRC) Christmas light bulbs as eyes, and I would like them to fade in stay lit for maybe 5 seconds, then fade out, stay out for a similar amount of time, and repeat. What would be the best way of going about this?
As a continuation of my fun here, I'm trying to try and zero the superblock on one of my hard drives to add it to the new array, when I try to do so (sudo mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sdb), Reports that it it "Couldn't open /dev/sdb for write - not zeroing" Running fuser /dev/sdb reports nothing...
I currently have a 5 disk raid 5 array (sda,b,c,d,e), (just added the last drive a few days ago) But now, I can't get it to assemble, after it thought one of the drives had failed (reported as degraded). If I run a mdadm --assemble --scan, I get /dev/sda has no superblock - assembly aborted...
Whenever I upload files using any protocol (bit torrent/ftp/html) my ping times spike anywhere from 500ms to 2000ms and my download speed drops to a fifth of what it should be. This is via cable modem tried on multiple computers, and multiple network configurations. Is this to be expected?
