OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

It was confirmed here - http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?p=22587440#p22587440 - by IntelEnthusiast (who verified it internally @ Intel) that the combination can work. So at least the potential is there. (Assuming you are running a C20X series chipset)

Windows 8 Preview / I am playing with Storage Spaces

Raid-5 is a red herring. You should be running Raid-6/Raid-Z2 with large 2TB + disks anyway. If we are only talking 2-3TB of data then sure, just mirror it with two drives - but assuming we are talking multi disk arrays just run 2 parity disks and you will be fine.

Windows 8 Preview / I am playing with Storage Spaces

Multiple parity drives. With Raid-6 or Raidz2/z3 and reasonably sized pools (8-10) drives your chance of actually loosing data are pretty miniscule (you are probably more likely to be robbed). As for monitoring - an email letting you know there is a problem should be supported by just...

    ZFS Deduplication requirements and performance

No, not 20TB, but I do have 12 256gig micron SSD's running a 1.5TB pool (all 2-way mirrors) as a VM host datastore. Your original post said "Given a example of a 2T Pool, VMWare use case". If that *isn't* representative of your requirements/setup why did you bring it up? But...

    ZFS Deduplication requirements and performance

I wouldn't neccecarily agree with that - for typical VM hosting I find that SSD's actually scale reasonably well - and excellently when you take performance into consideration. Bulk VM storage requirements aren't really that great - and as long as you keep your bulk data out of the VM image...

    Could use some storage advice

I have two of these: http://www.addonics.com/products/mst.php with the Infiniband mutlilane card connected to an PERC H200 (sas 2008 chipset) via 2 CX4 <-> SFF-8087 cables. You could do the same with a IBM M1015. It was the cheapest way I could find to get 8 full speed external ports...

Looking for sub-$200 data backup solution

Install a drive in the desktop, share it out, and backup laptop to the share? That's probably going to be the cheapest option. If sleep status is an issue you can probably configure wake on lan, or schedule a wakeup timer.

Windows 8 Preview / I am playing with Storage Spaces

Thanks - hadn't actually caught that portion of it - so in practice it becomes similar to drive extender in whs2003 (though the implementation is different). I expect it's also doing some sort of dynamic relocation on the back end to "balance" the drives when you add a new drive (otherwise you...

Windows 8 Preview / I am playing with Storage Spaces

I'm a bit confused - if you start with a 2 way mirror, then add a third drive, and it's *not* a parity setup, what exactly is it? (assuming we are protected from any drive failing).

    HP SAS Expander Owner's Thread

2 of the 16i LSI cards would give you 32 ports for < 800. That's not to say the expander can't work - it should - but I would go with native HBA's just to cut down on the variables (just an opinion of course though)

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

The DD identification method works if you have individual disk activity lights (norco cases, etc.) -- if you don't just reference via the serial number on the disk (at least that was the easiest way for me). Yep, napp-it supports sending email alerts on errors - look under the jobs tab.

    HP SAS Expander Owner's Thread

I would replace the SAS expander with 2 flashed m1015's, or one LSI 16i (16 port) cards (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816118142 ) - depending on how many PCIe slots you have available. The 2 flashed m1015's are probably cheaper than the expander card anyway - and you...

    ZFS Deduplication requirements and performance

It hardly seems worthwile for a 2TB pool - that's small enough that you could easily put together a pool comprised of, say, 256Gig crucial M4 SSD mirrors (~6000 dollars for 16 drives gives you 2TB usable with 8 mirrors). At that point the performance you get is going to tremendously...

Windows 8 Preview / I am playing with Storage Spaces

Windows 8 is a pretty significant change, so there will be some relearning there as well. That said, it looks like you should be fine as long as you stay away from the parity spaces. Run mirrors (multiple 2 disk mirrors) all in the same "space" - should be equivalent to raid10 (though it looks...

ZFS and SAS expanders with SATA drives a toxic combo?

From a point of view of someone not involved in the discussion it appears to me that the issue/position is more fundamental than that - * Has oracle uncovered and fixed "the problem" ** This really requires someone who could reproduce the problem previously to now run Oracle 11 and see if...

OpenSolaris derived ZFS NAS/ SAN (OmniOS, OpenIndiana, Solaris and napp-it)

As far as identifying disks, if you don't have a case/enclosure that supports the activity lights (to use the DD method) - the latest versions of napp-it do a good job of identifying the serial number of the disk (you have to run the smart monitoring part at least once - after that it seems to...

    BridgeSTOR Dedupe card

I expect the "1Gig/1TB data" figure is someone ballparking a ~1:2.5 dedupe ratio - so the "1TB" is only taking up 400GB of space - the "1TB of data" is "1TB of undeduplicated data, or 400GB of unique data". Not saying it's right or correct - but at least it get's people considering the...

    BridgeSTOR Dedupe card

That's per TB of unique data I think - so it would only take 2.5gigs if you achieved no deduplication.

best way to transfer 4TB of data

Is this just a one time thing? Just mount an SMB share in windows and drag the files to your USB 3.0 drive. 3TB at 1GbE speeds should take just under 9 hours. But it it's a one time thing just fire it up and let it go. If you are worried that you are somehow going to introduce subtle...

    Expanding my FreeNAS Box

I wouldn't use SATA drives behind a SAS expander - Nex7 has a good writeup here in another thread on it - but suffice to say there are plenty of issues. If you aren't PCIe slot limited you can add M1015's for however many drives you need - if you are LSI has a 16 port hba.

    ZFS Deduplication in Open Indiana

No worries - and yeah, the is/isn't broken distinction almost comes down to a semantics argument. I would say it's "functionally broken" when your dedupe table has to swap to disk. It's kinda like a car with a 5mph speed limiter - sure it works, but not really :). But if you are planning on...

    ZFS Deduplication in Open Indiana

Dedup isn't broken, it just has some significant caveats. These caveats are *especially* applicable to people running in home server type setups (lower memory, no l2arc, not a significant candidate for dedupe datawise, etc.) - so you tend to see statements that would be hyperbolic in other...

HP Proliant Microserver VS i3-2100+Server Board?

If I already had a case and power supply I would probably do the supermicro + i3-2100 (or 2100t if you want to go low power). The microserver is a killer value, but part of that value is the case, hard drive slots, etc. If you don't need/value those then I suspect the i3-2100 is going to...

    What is your Backup Strategy?

Are consumer drives bad for hardware raid?

WD Green drives have other issues besides whatever hardware raid incompatabilities there are though. I have a larger drive ZFS box, and setup one for a friend also. He had 5 2TB Green drives from a previous WHS setup (running ZFS now). So a total of 15 Hitachi 5k3000 drives and 5 WD...

You will have to go used, and still will be tough. The things that's going to kill you is *8-12 hotswap bays *redundant power supplies that's going to move you into a pricier bracket unless you happen to find a cheap pull on ebay. For instance...

    Serving files out over Samba/NFS

40-60MB/sec over 10GbE? I would 1) Export a share from a drive not on the Areca and see what kind of performance you get there (yeah, you did this with the ram disk - but it would be nice to run the share through the sata subsystem as well) 2) Try connecting over a 1GbE connection without any...

Neeed 3 platter, 3 TB hard drive, 4k sector for ZFS storage

Yeah, my Hitachi 5k3000's use WAYY more power than my WD Green's. ... That's because the WD Green's spend most of their time in a box being RMA'd Viva "advanced technology"!

*Official* Norco data storage products thread

    Interesting cheap JBODs available

Well, that 500 MB/sec is about what you can get out of 2 PCIe 1.0 lanes or 1 PCIe 2.0 lanes. But that seems like a really low number of lanes to be run to a 8x slot (I assume that's what the card is?) Might be worth verifying though.

Are consumer drives bad for hardware raid?

Ugh. I have 10 2TB disks and I've had 2 of them die. That would have been 20% of my data lost. Sure, some stuff I could probably re-create (dvd's I ripped, etc.) - but recorded TV shows, documents, backups for the computers, etc. would all be gone. And even for the stuff I could re-create -...

I HEART ZFS - Happy Valentines day Drive recovery

Not that it's easy to convert, but if you were doing this from the ground up wouldn't it be better to have 2x raid-z3's instead of 2x raid-z2's + 2x hotspares? since it would be the same number of drives?

Help with a hanging OI/Solaris ZFS System

Before you completely blow away the system you could try booting off of a live CD (OI or Solaris) and seeing if the issue repeats itself. Also if you have any older boot environment snapshots (beadmin) you could try rolling back to one of those.

My whacky (?) Microserver ZFS config and the slow writes.

I believe the write caching option here is just enabling the write cache on the hard drives, no? I think in most setups these will be enabled by default - having them disabled isn't common?

Help with a hanging OI/Solaris ZFS System

Yep, I can confirm using smartctl will present as S/W errors under iostat (typically 1 per invocation) - the current versions of napp-it I think warn about this in the web dialog.

*Official* Norco data storage products thread

I don't think there's an expander in the backplane of the 4220's - they are just being used to bundle 4 SATA cables together, not to provide any switching - it's just a cabling convienence. (i.e. you still need one HBA port per disk). You mentioned this later in your post: But I...

Suggestions for a WHS machine (low power used for streaming)

It should work fine with drives up to 3.2TB ref: http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=958208&page=316 (so 4TB drives are a no-go). You probably can't boot off of 3TB drives, but you can run them as data drives without issue.
