I'm in the process of building a home server box. I already have the case and a copy of the latest Windows Home Server.

I want this machine to be as low power as possible and quite too. It will be used to serve media files to other windows machines in the house.

So what I need at this point is a CPU/Mobo combo and a PSU. I already have a couple of 3 TB drives that I'm going to continue expanding over time (when Hard Drive prices drop).

My budget for this is no more than $500. Any suggestions?

Seasonic-based Gold PSU 750w+ if you want to expand to 20 drives.

That leaves you enough to get a server-class C202/C204 motherboard and a LGA 1155 CPU.

HP Microserver - available for 200-300 bucks depending on current coupons and deals

As for sound, here's the SPCR Review - 23dB measured @ 1m - as delivered

That HP machine is exactly what I'm looking for but after doing some research I found out it can't accept more than 2TB hard-drive per bay  I have two 3TB drives so this might not work for me (unless you guys can suggest a way to do that)

It should work fine with drives up to 3.2TB

(so 4TB drives are a no-go).

You probably can't boot off of 3TB drives, but you can run them as data drives without issue.
