ok, thanks for the reply im not sure if freenas allows for such control? when watching a movie after 30 mins the disc will have spun down in my experience
hi,
im building a nas for HTPC stream and audio / picture playback around the house.
something that has been bugging me:
I have 1 x 2TB Samsung spinpoint HD204UI, the spin time is 10 seconds and then the drive spins back down again after a period of time. Thats will be no problem for use...
thanks for the reply
I already have a bare fractal design define mini`s ready for the main server within which i will run 9 x 3TB drives in a yet to be decided software raid setup via freenas . After much deliberation I am going with the method you use as its what I already do at the moment...
one question, is it easy to allow the backup machine to sleep until a file change is made or a backup is committed each night ? your setup sounds fairly simple but robust as a design idea but id want my backup server using less than 2w in sleep/idle until the master server decided it wanted to...
synctoy looks quite good, i also use something very similar to that called Yadis which is also free and syncs folders and does network backup
http://www.codessentials.com/products/yadisbackup.html
it runs as a service on windows and will monitor your folders and update the remote location...
sounds like a good set-up is the 8 x 2TB drives in each machine or is it 8tb per server? (i suspect the latter)
Also are you using plan ZFS? or Z2 for parity across your discs?
thanks
Really interesting topic guys, im still deciding on the right storage and backup for my files.
reading between the lines it seems raid 5 AND 6 are not the best idea at the moment. I also agree with what you said with regards to the single to single storage mostly but im curious as to why so...
thanks for the advice. On second thought with stickers it wouldn't be much quicker to see if a disc had failed. If I received a snmp trap log or was just browsing to the server then i would already have to be on a computer via weblogin which hopefully would have access to the txt document...
so from a home use perspective, when using the onboard 6g sata`s it would be a good idea to get the serial numbers and document them. Rather than label the fronts of the drives I could just write down on the document which physical bay out of the 6 is tied to which serial number on the HDD...
Hi,
Im in the process of building a home server. For the streaming and storage of movies, tv clips and music. I haven't worked out what to use freenas or unraid whichever is good at both streaming HD content and good disc failure support / redundancy (if its better to use amahi for streaming...
im quite shocked at the amount of back light bleed its top of my lcd hate list above ghosting in fact.
whats the best monitor on sale at 27" for no back light bleed? my current tn has none and is very dark (but not totally) with nothing on screen with no glow or clouding its the best movie...
i have the 2510i . its the best TN panel ive ever owned tbh. it looks really smart for the money. it is genuinely a nice picture and the colors feel natural.
next year im looking to get a 27" 1440p IPS / PLS and i just hope that (beyond color depth and black) that any screen i get matches up...
hi,
im mesing around with 3 x portrait (looks awesome but yes the bezles are annoying) also normally run landscape but i find its too wide mostly unless i use the 360 gamepad and play driving games sat back a bit further.
just wondering for a laugh if its possible for me to run just two of...
i think future nvidia surround games (and a smaller icon for eyefinity suppoprt on games) ;)
will incorporate this.
cant wait for bezelless monitors TBH. in portrait i was immersed in the world it was upfront and real, but the width wasnt quiet there for the spacial aspect, but then again the...
i have bizlink and this happens about once every 15 hours, so over a week if i put in a few hours a night it will happen.
rare, but yes annoying.
i have bizlink, 3 x 2334bwx 1152p, 5850 on 10.6 and it happened on 10.4 too from memory.
interestingly my monitors report a signal out of range when...
hi,
i have power dvd 10 that can do blueray on one screen. but it cant do blueray on two or three screens. I have tried extended desktop and the software wont display on more than one even though the window can be stretched across them all.
now i know this is a hdcp thing or some blueray...
extra high quality sounds and slightly faster smoother gameplay on the amiga going from 512k to 2mb, and fitting a second DF0 disc drive, and then later a faster co-processor :D
hiredguns started it really
what are the chances of the 6xxx being compatible with 5xxx ?
i mean i dont see anyone teaming up 4xxx with 5xxx
so i guess with crossfire the architecture has to be very simular ? .. but with 6xxx being an adapted 5xxx at 40nm with some bits on would you think it would be possible to mate the...
actually playing unreal is great on eyefinity :D
seriously though this is all hot air, the people who saw eyefinity on the web and took the plunge love it and i have hardly seen a review where people go back to one large screen, hell they even lower the gfx settings just because eyefinity...
unless you run 6 screens there isnt a bezel in front of you ?
in fact imagine playing on 1 screen of a decent size and add two to either side and forget they are there.. its ok, as your mind knows its part of the same scene and peripheral vision kicks in wether you like it or not..
seriously...
ive seen a few people running the passive dp to dvi adapter recently, only £11 vs £70 ! i know it can cause some problems but it does seem very display dependant
my 3 monitors which TBH have great black levels, colours, motion and a really decent 2048 x 1152p res in total inc rip off VAT and shipping were £485 !
not exactly a lot for 6144 x 1152p with bezel management
the cost of a 'decent' 30" is twice as much and i have a greater pixel density...
so thats the 26th of april then ? (from what i read on the 6 core release time)
im also waiting for 6core amd cpu and the new fx MSI board with OC genie for (hopefully) and easy overclock to 3.8-4.0ghz on 6 cores :D
for this round i will miss the bezeless times as i just bought 3x samsung 2343bwx :D
having said that from posistioning them side by side i cant see the bezzel will bother me there already way too wide in 16:9 x 3
speaking of thin bezels the sammys have smaller bezel than my old 15"...
