This is freaking awesome. So many people in this thread completely miss the point. This is what being an enthusiast is all about.
Nice work OP, looks fantastic!
That bites. It's taking a little bit of excitement out of me. I'm not a watercooler and never will be, just not [H] enough I guess. If this thing runs super hot on air I'll just go with a 3770K and be done with it.
I will wait and see though, like you said, need some trusted reviews.
I just sold my my i7 920 and mobo in anticipation. I figure if haswell is great, I'll buy it. If not, then I'll pick up a cheap 3770 from somewhere. Either way, I can't wait. This is my first new build since 2009, i've got the itch bad.
This is the main reason I bought a 7870 for a $199 back in January. It will hold me over until 20nm parts come. If those specs are legit, then sign me up fro an 8970 come Christmas time.
Arctic silver will work fine, some will complain that it's conductive material, but as long as you aren't glopping it all over it's perfectly fine.
The process is about the same as doing a cpu. Most gpu's have 4 screws securing the heatsink to the card. Take those screws out, lift up and it...
Definitely go Q9450 or 9550. Q6600 should only be bought if you can get a killer, too good to pass up kind of deal. It likely won't overclock as well and uses more power.
I for one wouldn't mind a crap ton of used 7970's hitting the market. I wouldn't mind upgrading to one on the cheap. I like my 7870, but if I can pick up a 7970 on the cheap, I will.
The story in Bioshock is fine, it's the complete and total lack of challenge on any difficulty level that makes the game a bore. A veteran FPS player will crush that game.
I highly doubt anyone will be hitting 6ghz on these things with typical air and water coolers, maaaybe, but I doubt it.
I would be perfectly happy with 5ghz, coming from a 3.6 920.
I'm going to agree with the ambient temps theory. Over the winter, my 7870 idled at 28-29c or so, and loaded at 68-69c. Now with spring time ambient temps it's idling around 32-34 and loading at 72c.
Ambient temps always effect cards especially if it's a single fan reference type. Get a dual...
Just looking around various forums, it seem like hash rates can vary wildly across identical hardware when mining LTC, it's more than a bit frustrating. I too went back to BTC for that reason. I can also use my computer when doing BTC. With LTC the computer is all but unusable if you are using a...
Yeah, that is really my primary motivator. In the winter, it's not such a big deal. Summer however and the 920 can put off some serious heat. I have a VERY small office that is shared with my girlfriend, so the less heat my PC is putting out the better.
I'm kind of in the same boat OP. I still love building hardware and following the scene. But actually using that hardware for gaming is becoming increasingly rare for me. I recently upgraded my 6850 to a 7870 and I haven't even used it to really play much of anything. I got it because I felt it...
I love my 920. 3.6ghz daily for 4 years now. It runs rock solid stable at 4.1. I just didn't feel it was worth the extra power and heat when 3.6 ran everything just fine. Definitely the longest I've ever stuck with a platform and processor.
It's a testament to how great these chips were that...
I'm looking strongly at haswell for my first cpu upgrade since 2009. My good ole' 920 is still getting the job done, but moving from 45nm down to 22nm sounds like a good jump in performance, wattage and heat.
I've been running my 920 at 3.6ghz daily pretty much since day one and it's done...
I had pretty crappy results with my standard 7870 on litecoin. Even after hours of tweaking, the best hash rate I could pump out on cgminer was about 300-310 kh/s
On the hardware comparison guide just about every 7870 listed was pulling almost 400 with the exact settings I was using. I don't...
Looks like this will make a nice upgrade to the 4670 in my HTPC. Although with a power draw above 80w for both means it will likely need an external power connector, that kind of bites. I can live with that though.
I'm getting the downclocking failure also. This is on Win 7 x64. It's not that it won't downclock it just jumps up and down constantly every 10 seconds or so, even when the pc is completely idle. Annoying, but not a deal breaker for me.
I think there is alot of truth in this statement. I'm still an active gamer but I don't get nearly as excited for games as I did in my younger days. It feels strange saying that being only 27, but when you've been gaming since you were 3....it carries some weight.
Thats strange, I just recently installed my copy of 7 pro that I got off of acm.org as well. I haven't had any issues yet but i'll post here if I run into anything. Keep us posted.
I think the general word on the street is that AMD/Nvidias new stuff is due out in the fall. If you can wait a few more months then by all means. Otherwise as little as $200 can get you a very good card from the current gen, which should still last quite a while. It's a good time to be a...
I've only had my P6T Deluxe for about a month now, but so far it's been rock solid. I haven't overclocked it for daily use yet since the i7 at stock clocks is beastly. But I did a mild test overclock on it up to 3.6Ghz and had no problems.
It's very possible that something else is conflicting with his game, for most people with i7's including myself, the game runs between 40-60 fps rock solid. I myself went from averaging barely 30 fps to averaging over 50 when I went from my e7400 @ 3.6 to my stock clocked i7.
