Help me build a gaming desktop PC

Thanks Skillz. Now that I think about it though, I can build the computer this month too. I just said January because I figured it would be better to wait for the holidays. I'd like to get my computer parts ordered this week.

Need a video card for BF3

Trying to upgrade a PC so that it's ready for Battlefield 3. Basically, all I am looking for is a video card. The motherboard has a PCI-E 2.0 16x slot, and the power supply is a Corsair TX650W. I'm not really looking to play BF3 at the highest settings, but I would like to be able to play it at...

The best Nvidia 3D Vision Monitor

What's the consensus on the top 3D monitor supporting Nvidia's 3D Vision? I'm about to buy parts for a 3D desktop computer here pretty soon and I just don't know which display to go for. Here is a list of displays that work with Geforce cards...

    Building A PC in Japan

I have experience with building PCs in Japan. For the first one, I bought some of the parts at Akihabara and ordered a bunch of parts online through Kakaku. Seriously, the prices aren't bad. It just seems that way because the U.S. dollar is very weak compared to the yen at the moment. For the...

    Building a new computer

Hello everyone: I built a computer about a year ago and I received help from the people on this forum, and I must say that you guys are the best. So, my dad asked me to build him a computer and I told him that I would do it. However, I can't do it without you guys so here it is :) 1) What...

    No signal on my monitor

MrkXCel: I apologize for starting threads with the same issue. I just go so frustrated when I came home from work and this happened. I have some reports that I need to work on tonight and now I can't do it. If you don't mind me asking, how do I disable multi-GPU? Edit: I just did a quick...

    No signal on my monitor

I recently purchased an HDMI cable to use for my computer. As soon as I connected one end to my video card and the other end to my monitor, I went into the built in monitor settings (the DVI cable was still plugged in as well so I could do this) and switched my display to HDMI. After that, my...

    What would be faster - Dualcore w/GTX 295 or i7 w/9800GT?

How about getting the i7-920 AND the GTX 285 or the 260 if you want to cut down on the cost a bit, rather than getting the i7-965 or even the i7-940 which isn't even worth the 400 some dollars.

ummm.... Core i7 920...How warm exactly???

i7-920 overclocked to 3.8 ghz, using Noctua cpu cooler and asus P6T. Idle 39-41, load 68-70.

    Building for the first time

So I finally got my new computer and it looks like everything is running okay. I overclocked the CPU to 3.8 ghz and it seems to be running stable so far. I'll still have to run a few more stress tests though. As for temps, I am seeing high 30s low 40s on idle, and mid to high 80s at 100% load...

Red_Star: Thanks for the suggestion. However, I am starting to think that the motherboard was bad from the very beginning. Here is my story: I sent my faulty motherboard back to the retailer last week, and I've been trying to get them to e-mail me back but they have not been responsive at...

    New pc problem.

Jimrob: I had the same exact problem as you. I bought components for a new computer 3 weeks ago, and after finishing the build, the fans would start up, I got all the lights, the optical drive functioned normally, but nothing would show up on display. Make sure to check and see that your...

This is what I was worried about, thanks. When I get my replacement motherboard in, I'll go back to the shop and talk to them about what you just said. This is why I love this forum. Thanks again :)

    Building for the first time

Good question. I am not 100% sure, but I am guessing that its the standoff thats stuck into the case. However they did mention the word screw to me, but they probably meant the standoff.

    Building for the first time

Thanks Red_Star :) One thing that I forgot to mention was that apparently, one of the screws that I used to mount the motherboard is stuck in the case, because that type of screw was not compatible with the case mounting panel holes. They showed it to me and it is occupying the very top left...

    Building for the first time

So it looks like the motherboard was bad. I just sent a replacement request form to the retailer, but its been over 2 weeks since the purchase so I'll have to wait and see if they'll take it back. If not, I'll be RMAing through Asus using my warranty. Its a shame that it had to be the mobo hehe.

Err, I hope its not permanent damage :/ That is what I am actually dreading right now. I am hoping they would call me and tell me that everything is working now and there is no damage done instead :p

enginurd: That is true. I didn't really want to go through a lot of troubleshooting because yes, I just didn't have time to. There are no results because I didn't try the barebone setup :) The post was more of an update of the situation, and I asked about the bad screws question just to...

    Building for the first time

Well here is an update. My computer is still in the shop, and they haven't given me a call yet. However, I went in the shop this morning because I needed to buy some DVD+Rs and I saw my computer on the table, all taken apart. I guess this means that they have been working on it, which is good...

    Need the cheapest laptop possible!

You can get the Asus EEE 100HA for $349.99 with free shipping on Amazon. The 8.9" screen version goes for $298.53, but I highly recommend a 10" screen over anything else. I also recommend upgrading your memory to 2GB instead of just 1GB. This will cost you an extra $30 or so and is easy to...

    Need the cheapest laptop possible!

Go with a netbook. I used to have a regular laptop. It was pretty decent and was able to run games at mid to low settings, depending on the game. I decided to sell it to buy a netbook for mobility and a desktop for entertainment/gaming. You can't go wrong with that kind of setup. I have the asus...

enginurd: Its not that I don't appreciate the help. You guys have helped me out so much already, with picking out the parts and helping me put it together for the first time. Unfortunately for me, troubleshooting takes a lot of time and patience, and I just don't have the time :( I'll keep...

    Building for the first time

Update: So I went into the PC clinic and I ended up leaving my computer there, again lol. They are going to do all of the troubleshooting to figure out which part(s) is bad. I could have probably done this myself, but it would have taken a lot of time and frustration on my part. I decided to...

    Building for the first time

Well, I took my computer to the shop last week to have them rebuild it their way. Unfortunately, I just got a call from them saying that the computer still won't startup properly (nothing shows up on the screen). I am going to go there later today and I'll most likely just take my computer back...

Hehe. Naa, I am living in Japan atm so I don't really have a lot of options there. I don't have any friends here who are computer savvy. I don't think I did any damage, because I was pretty careful when I was building er up. However, I rather just spend a little bit of cash than spend hrs trying...

    Building for the first time

Err, I hope that I won't be having to RMA any parts. I've decided to just take my computer to the shop tomorrow and have the pros take a look at it. It will likely be a week or so before I hear back but I'd rather play it safe than sorry. I hope that I wasn't responsible for any damage hehe.

I just tried using a regular speaker and connected it to the green speaker slot but there is still no beep. No beep on the motherboard either.

Shouldn't the motherboard make a beep when I boot up the computer too? Something is not right.

Just checked and reinstalled the memory. DIMM_A1, DIMM_B1, and DIMM_C1. I also took out the video card and put it back in. I still can't get anything to show up on my monitor. I tested the monitor on my netbook and it works. The computer stays running, the dvd-rom works just fine. Nothing...

Ok well I learned that the 3-pin cable can go into the 4-pin cpu fan connector and the fan runs great. I just booted up the computer for the first time but there is a problem. I can't get anything to show on my monitor, and I can't get any warning sounds. My monitor tells me that theres no...

    Building for the first time

Nope. It did come with a low-noise adaptor (L.N.A) and a ultra-low-noise adaptor (U.L.N.A). I am guessing that they look like extension cables, but they are all 3-pin cables.

    Gaming Rig Build

Just take your socks off, don't work in a carpeted area, and always remember to touch your case or power supply before you handle the parts. Simple :) Edit: or you can just play it 100% safe and build your computer while completely naked.
