Trying to upgrade a PC so that it's ready for Battlefield 3. Basically, all I am looking for is a video card. The motherboard has a PCI-E 2.0 16x slot, and the power supply is a Corsair TX650W. I'm not really looking to play BF3 at the highest settings, but I would like to be able to play it at least at medium settings. I don't really have a budget. Just looking for something that can handle BF3 and will be fine for the motherboard and power supply that I've got.

If this is impossible and if I'll have to upgrade my PSU too, please let me know. I would like to keep my TX650W, but if it means I can't play BF3 then I'll have to upgrade the PSU too.

Thanks!

TX650 is plenty fine for any single card really. I am interested in what your CPU is however. Resolution too.
Any of these cards should do you fine for BF3: 560ti, 6950 1GB or 2GB (depending on res?), 6870, or anything better (6970, 570, 580, 590, 6990). The 460 1GB or 6850 will probably be fine too if you are tight on cash or don't have a huge resolution.

Just check deals. I found a nice MSI GTX 570 for 247$ with -40$ off and a 40$ MIR so that helped and as far as i know it's faster then the 560. I played the Alpha on highest setting's i could get and blew it up with getting 77fps lowest. But the 560 Ti isn't bad like they said for Med setting's! Just saying for the price just keep a eye out for deals for something a lil better. Peace

Thanks for the advice guys. I decided to go with the gtx 560 ti so it should arrive tomorrow or the next day. Once again, thanks so much because I really do appreciate the help!

Why don't you wait for BF3 performance numbers? We can rather safely bet that stuff like 560/6870 will run it but still it's just an educated guess at most.

LOL i was joking, I have 3 6970's in Tri-Fire and was in the Alpha it was such overkill it was funny, Just 1 6970 card and everything maxxed out at 1920X1200. Just waiting for them to turn on the Features were i would need more then 1 card.

Crazy rig! :D What resolution do you play at normally (multi monitor)? How much is the power draw when using them all for something heavier than the BF3 alpha? Don´t even know if Witcher 2 with ubersampling would break a sweat for a setup like that. Metro 2033 maxed?

Metro is Maxxed but i have to keep VSYNC on with D3dOverRider because if i dont my cards will render some crazy framerates which can overheat them lol. The Witcher 2 with UberSampling does slow it down but i think there is a driverbug with that otherwise everything is maxxed out. I have 3 powercolor 6970's which have the stock 940Mhz cores on them, A 2600K @ 4600 Mhz 24/7 at 1.30 volts (38C idle 65 Load,) it will do 5Ghz at 1.35 volts ( 42C Idle 72 Load )and i can leave it there but i really dont need the power for everyday use. I have a Corsair 1200 watt PS which is awesome!!
3dmark06 LAST RUN WAS AT 36100, I can run some Benchies for you if you need them.

Here is a Picture of my setup, Sorry for crappy picture from my Iphone

Well guys, I know for one of my best friends who I've known for 2 decades (since my childhood really) I've already preordered him BF3 for PC and on my next paycheck this Friday I'm getting my friend a GTX 570 Classified from eVGA for his upcoming birthday. That should be more than good enough for BF3. I might though need to have him get a better PSU though (He's got a Enermax 600W PSU) and with the rest of the components inside the machine (Core i7 920 CPU, X58 ASUS mobo (P6T Deluxe V1) and 6GB of RAM it may be too much combined with the card. But that's just I'm doing for him. As for me, I have a GTX 480 eVGA with a Core i7 950, eVGA X58 3X SLI mobo and 6GB of high-end Corsair Dominator RAM. And DICE has already said in a tweet in no more certain terms a couple of months ago, "If you're current machine can handle BFBC2 now it'll handle BF3 just fine upon release." My $.02. Out!

WHich is more than you monitor can display anyway.
40 to 60 fps is smooth play for most games out there. 70 is more than enough. :)

Seconded. Unless you have a true 120 hz monitor you can't see anything over 60fps anyway. And even if you do, some people don't even have eyes capable of perceiving more than 70fps.

I think the magical frame rate for human eyes is about 30. I think what you are talking about are irregularities in the progressive scan on the display that might be within the visible range for some people.

I used to think like you. But I am playing Dirt 2 with a 120Hz monitor and switching between 60Hz and 120Hz is night and day difference. 60Hz is a choppy and stuttery mess compared to buttery smooth 120Hz. I running it between 90-130fps is true even when fps is below 120fps.

So you've transitioned now to not thinking at all instead? I didn't say he wouldn't notice greater than 60, I said his monitor may not be able to display more than that as most LCDs are 60hz.

As for how many you need over 60 for it to be "buttery smooth", that depends entirely on the person, and as Sugo mentioned, the panel. LCDs have an inherant disadvantage with motion continuity vs. tube screens.

We need SED displays already...

There are multiple issues to consider with 60hz/120hz, the biggest being what happens if you are using vsync and the frame rate has to drop below 120. Another is the tickrate of the game engine itself (if it is tied to display frame rate), those are two reasons why 120hz is better/smoother in games. Input lag is another.

Non thinking? I am referring to your statement that some people can not see above 70fps. You are talking as if some of us are superhumans. You don't have to be special to see the benefits above 70fps
