    Ethernet boot covers

Anything's possible. What you're proposing should work, but.... It might be less work/money to buy components and make your own cables.

hp to sell touchpads on ebay (December 11th.)

I was on ebay at 6, and after 20 mins I finally got through and made my purchase on a 32gb one. When I got done with paypal and back to ebay, I went to My Ebay and there was no record of the transaction. Then I went and logged back in to paypal, and same story. Don't understand how I can go...

Where to find or buy quad pci ethernet card at?

PCI-X cards work just fine in PCI slots. The ports aren't going to run at half speed or anything silly like that. They just hang off the end of the slot, so make sure there is nothing on the motherboard next to the pci slot that will interfere.

    WRT54GS stuck at 16mbit speeds

You could try to flash it with the dd-wrt firmware to see if that will free it up some. If you're going to buy a new router you've got nothing to lose. Any of the 'N' routers should be faster. Your best bet for long term reliability and speed is probably one of the *.nix routers on an old PIII...

Basic Switch Network - How to Set 'Private'?

Go to the network and sharing center, then advanced sharing settings, and try to turn on Network Discovery. That might allow you to select home network rather than public network.

Set a linksys SRW2016 switch to DHCP, now can't access it

Look at your DHCP server and see what addresses it has issued. Alternately, I was able to find the IP of a used print server I bought by connecting directly to it and looking at a network capture from WireShark.

FIOS: Own router + NIM or FIOS Router?

You can use the FIOS router in bridge mode, essentially making the moca port a LAN port, to provide VOD and the guide to your STBs. But if they'll bring you a moca adapter/NIM for free I'd go that route. Then you can use any router you want. I used IPCop so I could have multiple LANs for video...

    Tenda

I've used some of their USB wireless card. They work pretty well. I get better much throughput than an old Linksys one I have, and a bit better than the Airlink ones I got at Fry's.

CAT5e Wall Socket with CAT6 Cable

I used cat5e sockets with solid cat6 cable when I wired up a friend's house. He hasn't had any problems, and has gotten the expected performance out of it. I can't really say if there is or isn't any difference.

    Supermicro server question

Supermicro may not be the way to go for a home server. I've had a 1u, 2u, 3u, and a 4u tower that was more of a workstation. The rack mount servers were unbearably loud to have in the house. Much louder than the Dell or HP stuff I've had.

Cheapest way to add storage to Proliant DL380/G3

The setup you link to should work with the proliant. How are you with custom modification? You could remove the scsi backplane and modify the drive trays for sata drives. You'd have to remove about a 1/4" of material to get sata power to fit. Then stick in a PCI-X sata controller. You would lose...

    Diagnostic POST cards for servers?

How long are you letting it run before you decide its not posting and you turn it off or reset it? I had a similar issue with a DL360 G4. Every time I unplug it, it takes 2+ minutes to POST the next time I plug it in. If I turn it off and leave it plugged in it, it will POST in under 30 seconds...

    Need some computers....

Also ask any other family members or friends that may be upgrading their systems, or have upgraded and have old PCs lying around. Your teachers would also be good people to ask. Check the craigslist "for free" section as I often see old systems and parts there. To get the good deals you have to...

SCSI as a short term fix for OS Drive

On a normal 32-bit 33mhz PCI bus you'll hit a wall at about 80MB/s for sequential reads. That said the system could still "feel" fast when you're using it because the random access times will be fast with the 10k rpm scsi drives. Also I've had issues with the 80-pin -> 68-pin adapters forcing...

    Dell/EMC AX150i

If they firmware limited the ram, they probably firmware limited the cpu too, but I would try it anyway. :) IIRC all the Tualatins were pretty cool, so I don't think you'd get a noticeable heat difference. SATA II + S370 + DDR 1? It sounds like this is some hacked together system more than of...

    Dell/EMC AX150i

I've never seen a socket 370 system that supported DDR memory. Can you tell what chipset it uses? What kind of disks does it use? I think it should support the later PIIIs since that celeron is the same Tualatin core, and any board that suports DDR should support 1GB of RAM.

Installed 2 new HDD. Computer -VIBRATES- now.

I would think this is something other than a hard drive. Open your case up and turn it on to see if you can pinpoint where it's coming from. You may have a wire interfering with a fan.

    Need SCSI expansion help/suggestions

    Need SCSI expansion help/suggestions

I ran a Compaq drive array off of a PERC4. The only issue I had was that the PERC was not able to light up a failed drive the way a compaq/hp controller could. The PERC would tell me drives were failing, but it was inconsistent and would not report the same drive as bad all the time. At first I...

    Skulltrail Build Problems

So, I got a cheap Skulltrail D5400XS board at a local Fry's after seeing a post about it in the hot deals forum. It was open box, but I decided to chance it. The issue I'm having is that the first 2 PCI-e slots do not seem to work. With a graphics card in one of the first 2 slots, I power up...

    BIOSTAR G41-M7 motherboard question

You get this thing as part of the Fry's deal yesterday? I did.... Seeing as how they're basically the same processor, I would be shocked if the board did not support the E1400. My vote goes to incomplete compatibility list.

    New File Server

I always like to see pics and benchmarks of people's servers! Is this for a home server system? Looks like you spent some serious money for that case, and the OS for home use. I can definitely say that Supermicro's quality is great, I've picked up several servers made by them and I have no...

Stripping down P.C.'s and selling parts questions..

You'll make more parting them out than trying to sell them whole. Nobody is looking to buy a PIII system, but there are some people out there who will spend a few bucks for a motherboard/cpu/whatever to go with parts they already have rather than build/buy entire systems. eBay is probably going...

Should I just return these drives?

Those down spikes seem to be characteristic of all seagate drives. I've noticed them on all seagate and maxtor products I've had...160GB, 320GB, 500GB, 1TB. They all do that to some extent, and I've noticed that the WD, Samsung and Hitachis all have much smoother curves, and generally perform...

More HDs = Slower OS Boot?

In my experience if you have several drives, and you do not set the boot order properly it can take a long time to boot. If the OS drive is the last drive in the boot order, your PC will eventually try to load an OS from it after checking the devices ahead of it in the boot order.

Of the stuff I've bought new I've had very little fail. I'd say the most common things that fail on me are optical drives. Updating an old PC

If responsiveness is the issue I would think that a faster hard drive would help. Also make sure it is running in AHCI mode and not some type of legacy/ide mode. Intel SE7501WV2 Server MoBo - Windows XP

It should run Windows XP. It will probably be disappointing as a desktop today. You're going to be limited to the on-board video or a PCI video card. As a server board it doesn't have PCI-e or even AGP. You will also be stuck with IDE drives, unless you get a PCI-X sata card. It is an E-ATX, so...

Good Coolant to use - non conductive

Definitely agree with using distilled water. I had a leak with some of that "non-conductive" MCT-5 crap and it destroyed my board, and video card. It also made a huge sticky mess. I went with distilled water and had another leak and watched the water run across the board, and into the power...

Why is SATA bus operation affect by Ultra 320 or USB Jump drive?

Are you using the onboard controllers for both SATA and SCSI? If so it may be a common problem with those workstations, and HP may have a fix for it. They generally have pretty good support and downloads for their business class stuff.

is this there a scsi to ide or sata adapter out there?

It sounds like these are workstation drives. They have a 68-pin data connector, and a standard molex power connector? The 410 probably has the 2 smaller drives, and they're ultra2 (80MB/s). Much faster than the IDE stuff of the same era, but not even close when you compare it to new IDE stuff...

is this there a scsi to ide or sata adapter out there?

You will have to have a scsi controller, there is no way I've seen to make them work with IDE or SATA controllers. If you want advice on whether buying a scsi controller is worth it, you'll have to give us more info on what type/size the drives are, and what you want to do with them. A good...
