Well, that is what I was told on my last build and after using the computer for 3 years, I wish I had built something that was even more overkill. :-)
The spreadsheets and even web browsing tax my current system, so I want something as powerful as the budget will allow.
Also, I prefer ECC...
Thanks for pointing that out. Can you recommend a similar mobo & CPU that are compatible with ECC RAM?
As a last resort I could go with non-ECC RAM, but I would prefer ECC RAM if we can come up with the right build parts.
I"m ordering parts now. What about this memory?
Mushkin Enhanced 32GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Registered 1066 (PC3 8500) Server Memory Model 992079
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GYZUK6E
Is it the best choice for the ASRock Z97 Extreme6?
Here are the other parts on my list. Any comments...
Here is what I read on the WD site. Red drives are designed mostly for use in RAID. Therefore, they handle read errors differently and this can potentially lead to data loss in non-RAID systems. In short, they stop trying to read earlier and give the RAID a chance to recover the data.
This is the card reader I used a couple years ago.
Rosewill RCR-AK-IM5002 USB2.0 75 in 1 internal Card Reader
I guess I'll use it again because it seems to work fine. I was looking for something even better, but maybe there isn't anything better.
I can budget for additional RAM.
I...
Thank you. That's all excellent advice!
Will this build fit in the Antec Solo II case?
Are Seasonic PSU's not as good as EVGA now?
Is there an Asus motherboard that will substitute for the ASRock Z97? Just curious. I do like the ASRock Z97 mb and I'll go for that upgrade.
Can you...
I need to add one additional computer to my fleet. I usually build rather than buy because I tend to have special requirements (such as silence or ECC RAM, etc.). However, for this computer I don't have any special requirements. (Please feel free to suggest that I just buy an off-the-shelf PC if...
Yes, that is true. However, I am also often copying large files across my LAN (NFS v4 network with gigabit ethernet) and to external drives. Therefore, file copy operations often slow me down anyway.
Thanks defaultluser & TheEschaton. Seems like we are getting a consensus on CPU, mobo and RAM.
An ideal case for me would be the Antec Solo II, but I think it could be too small for this build. Another case that interests me is the Silverstone Fortress FT05. I have never used it, just read...
Speaking of SPCR review, I just saw this article from last year:
Quiet Liquid Cooled Gaming PC Build Guide | silentpcreview.com
http://www.silentpcreview.com/article1437-page1.html
I have never built (or owned) a water cooled PC. Will they run trouble-free for years? My last build from...
This will be my 3rd such build, all guided by this forum. I built the first one in 2010 and the 2nd one in 2012. So I'm a bit overdue.
1) What will you be doing with this PC? Big spreadsheets, and lots of content creation including audio editing (with Ardour), some image editing, some software...
Thank you! I went with the M4 from Amazon for $629 with free shipping. I almost went with the 830, but I have some other Crucial M4 drives, so I decided to go for uniformity :)
Yes, thanks. I always buy from Amazon anyway (when I can) because they have a better return policy. But I search on NewEgg because their search functions are way better.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
I'm considering this drive:
Crucial 512 GB m4 2.5-Inch Solid State Drive SATA 6Gb/s CT512M4SSD1
Any opinions on whether there is a better option? I want a cost effective, large, reliable and good performing SSD for a laptop.
Thanks. I'm hoping to find another 500 GB drive in the price range of the Crucial 512GB M4 (around $550). The largest drive I can find in that price range that is only 7.0 mm thick is what I'm after. Of course, I would like a good drive, but that goes without saying.
Can anyone recommend an SSD to replace the Seagate Momenus Thin drive, which is only 7.0mm thick? I bought a Crucial M4 only to find out that it is 9.5mm thick and will not fit in the case. NewEgg doesn't allow searching on the thickness of an SSD, so I'm having trouble finding a suitable drive...
I never posted a complete list of the components I used for this build, so here it is:
Macally USB Slim Keyboard (ICEKEYB)
Contour Design RollerMouse Free2
2 of Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24-in Widescreen IPS High Performance Monitor (1920 x 1200) with DVI-D With HDCP DisplayPort VGA

I'm wrapping up this build. I just installed the OS (opensuse 12.1). I have more to finish before this system is ready to use. However, I have already hit a problem. If the computer sits idling overnight, it becomes unresponsive to all input the next morning. I'm not suspending or hibernating...
UPDATE: the problem was not resolved earlier. I finally found out that it was a bad stick of RAM. I replaced the RAM and the problem is now definitely resolved. It was the RAM from the very beginning! It took me about 14 months to find it...
Thank you. I will look at the Antec Solo II case. The others are too big. I need to stick close to a 17" x 17" size.
I will need another quiet PSU because both computers need to remain functional and equally quiet. I'll reuse the current PC. A new use for it just came up, which is why I decided...
Hey, I changed my mind on one very important thing. Rather than do an upgrade, I'm going to do a new build. :)
I'm going with the Asus P8B workstation motherboard, the Kingston ECC RAM (4 x 4GB), the Xeon E3-1230 CPU, silent GPU and all the other parts Danny Bui already recommended. No...
Is $75 a good deal?

I decided I can take my time with the eSata solution. Once I put the computer together, I can back up using USB, as needed.
I'll remove those two sata cards from my cart (as well as the eSata enclosure, for now) and I'll follow up on the IBM M1015 because that sounds like the right solution...
IBM M1015 -- very interesting. I'm reading the article now...
I'm not confident the other cards will work with Linux. I saw one review of a similar Rosewill card that mentioned it specifically would not run under Linux (the driver was very old). The cards I selected were neutral -- I didn't...
I want to get this system up and running asap. I ordered two controller cards because neither one (or any other I could find) got great reviews. I saw some poor reviews (as well as some good reviews) on both of those cards.
I didn't want to get stuck with a sata card that wouldn't work over...

I meant is there any RAM that would work that NewEgg has in stock. I'm going with the 4 X 4GB sticks for now. I can live with 16 GB total. It will save me some money now. I'll upgrade later.
This way I can start using my computer again without waiting a month for the other RAM to come in...
OK, I'll go with 4GB sticks and wait for prices on 8GB sticks to drop.
This memory is in stock at NewEgg:
Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR3 1333 (PC3 10600) Server Memory Model CT2KIT51272BA1339
The Kingston is out of stock as far as I can see.
I ordered everything. I switched up my external USB 3.0 strategy a bit and decided to get a single drive eSata enclosure. I'll test it and see how I like eSata compared to USB 3.0.
