DIY 90° 24-pin ATX plug guide, from PP05-E cableset

In preparation for trying to fit an SFX-L PSU in the M1 without using a custom bracket (and losing the second 120mm side mount area) or putting pressure on a GPU with a backplate, I tested whether the Method posted by Blah123 on Hardwareluxx.de for modifying PCI-E power connectors to exit at a...

The "You need 8GB vRAM for 4K" myth

First, go watch Linus Tech Tips' video on testing a 10320x1440 surround rig using 3x R9 290x. Watched it? Now, 10320x1440 is 14,860,800 pixels. 4k (UHD, really) - 3840x2160 - is 8,294,400pixels. So, that surround load is nearly 2x the raw pixel output load of 4K. Linus specifically chose the...

    HDD unmounting itself (windows 7)

This one has me stumped. My system has been running fine in it's current configuration for over a year now. This evening, during a file copy (newly created file), two of my partitions (on the same drive) disappeared (from explorer and from drive manager) causing the copy, and explorer, to hang...

    Weird colour issue

This morning, my monitor was working perfectly fine. This afternoon, after leaving it on all day, I returned to find it... odd. Colours are displayed incorrectly, making everything look dark and blotchy. The Lagom calibration test shows the problem well, even with the crappy iphone camera...

    Adding barbs to heatercore

My dirt-cheap ebay heatercore has a unfortunately large set of barbs (17mm OD, 15.5mm ID). What would be the easiest way of hooking this up to a normal 1/2" tubing loop? I've heard of people cutting off the existing tubing and epoxying barbs directly on to the radiator, but I'm not quite sure...

    Car radiator (not heatercore)

What are the drawbacks to using a car radiator? The huge surface area would be great for passive cooling (or using one very slow fan). Most have very large barbs, so a little modding would be needed to fit them into a standard 1/2" or 3/8" loop. Are there any specific pump characteristics required?

    Liquid metal 'hot loop'

I was browsing the various low melting point metals, and found a rather interesting fusible alloy called Cerrolow 136. It's melting point is only 57°C so the hot side of a peltier would easily be able to melt it, it's a lot less aggressive than Field's Metal or Wood's Metal (i.e. it shouldn't...

Opening up the P180's fan doors with only a Stanley knife & pliers (and maybe a file)

Anyone who owns a P180 has probably noticed how restrictive the fan grill doors are. Some people simply remove them, and others take the ol' Dremel to them and remove the extended portion of the slats. This looks much better than having the doors missing, but is very time consuming, and needs...

    Problems with DVI on l2335

I just received an HP l2335, and I'm having some problems setting it up. I can persuade it to run in clone mode at 1920x1200 over VGA, but I can only get an image in dualview mode on DVI (and at a maximum of 1024x768)! I'm definitely using a dual-link DVI-D cable. Ideally, I'd like to run it in...
