In terms of checking for the overscan setting, pictures are not really needed. I have posted a picture of what it looks like a few pages back :) Just press "menu" then the button above (down arrow) twice, easy :D
Here is 576 with 4:3, aspect mode:
Then 576 with 16:9, aspect mode...
OK I checked via component RGB and HDMI, and yes, there is a green line when using 1080i. I never noticed this before, as I have never used 1080i, only 1080p.
Cheers :D
Well Benq UK told me the fix was released in July, that is when they emailed me and arranged to swap over the monitor, no upgrade, just a straight swap :)
HDMI 1:1 1080p works great, as you can turn overscan off with the latest firmware. I suggest you go back a few pages and read the thread a...
Well the Dell had lousy picture quality, via the component RGB and composite connections.
It can't do various resolutions and interlaced signals very well, if at all.
720p suffers from screen tearing, like bad vsynch on a PC game, you have to turn on/off the monitor to fix most times...
Feb 2007 mate :)
You would not be disapointed with this monitor. Coming from the Dell 2407 to the Benq like I have, the difference is night and day for me with the firmware update.
Cheers
OK I tried the 24hz mode, but as I suspected, it did not work. I was quoted 50hz as the lowest this monitor goes to, by Benq when I was inquiring about PAL signals.
Here are a couple of shots from the demo of Heavenly Sword via HDMI, Aspect mode,720p:
Also a photo from Superman...
OK the image is stretched a tiny bit as I said before, but does not cause a massive distortion. It is not an inch on both sides  :p
I compared it with my 32" LCD and the image is very slightly stretched on the Benq. It is about 5mm on each side or a CM in total.
Anyway I am...
They did an exchange, taking my monitor and giving me a direct replacement at the same time :) No waiting for an upgrade.....
Parceline did the direct exchange. The first swap was not good, as the monitor they gave me did not have the overscan option and the DVI port did not work! :eek...
How about a quote?
The ATSC digital television standards define 480p with either 704x480 (non-square sampling) or 640x480 (square sampling) pixel resolutions, at 24, 30, or 60 Hertz frame rates. A 16:9 aspect ratio is defined at 720x480 pixels, using non-square, anamorphic sampling.
Both...
I think you are being pedantic :)
My original Benq monitor had zero aspect ratio options and no overscan settings, it was an early firmware revision.
Everything was overscanned and stretched to fill the screen, this new firmware is most welcome and as mentioned, a HUGE improvement
As...
Here is a comparison of the 640x480 modes on the game cube via component and VGA.
I taped the edges of the screen, so you can see that there is about 4-5mm difference on each black bar. Well within my threshold of acceptable image quality. There is not any noticable image distortion...
If the game cube adds black bars to the sides of the image it outputs, then obviously the monitor will have them there when set to fill, as it does. So the monitor is displaying the image correctly, exactly as it was sent from the video source, in the case, the game cube.
Here is my monitor...
Huh? Could you re-state that post please, I don't follow it at all, cheers :)
Turning overscan off gives back the 5% of the screen that was being removed by zooming in. Now the image that the game cube outputs is being displayed correctly, at least to my eyes it looks right.
On a 16:10...
Thanks for asking that question RockoW, I would not have thought of checking otherwise. I thought overscan was just related to HDMI :)
My game cube is a US version I purchased via ebay, 480p works great now that overscan is switched off, much more of the screen is visable and the aspect ratio...
Here is an in game shot, 480p, overscan off and aspect mode selected:
You can see that much more of the screen is now displayed. Look at the menu in the top right hand corner, where the "R" button is located :D
Great stuff!
OK how about this then. DVI and D-Sub seems to grey out the overscan option, but all other modes have the option there!
All the previous pictures of my game cube were taken with overscan turned on, I did not realise this. So I turned overscan off and selected aspect, here is the...
Well I found out that I must hold down "B" when starting the game cube to get progressive scan rather than interlaced. The picture looks a lot better with 480p, but the scaling is the same.
To be honest the picture looks good enough to me, I am not watching movies or anything on the game...
The monitor says it is doing 50hz not 60hz. I confirmed this 100% with Benq before I purchased this monitor, as my previous Dell 2407 could not do any 50hz modes, or support PAL in any way.
I just upscaled a movie to 1080p 50hz and everything was as smooth as butter, I checked the end credits...
Picture over HDMI with overscan off looks great with 1:1, no distortion at all.
My pictures confirm this, no? With the arrows being right at the edge of the screen with black bars at the top and bottom only :)
The game cube gave me 480i with Zelda, is that OK? Will another game give me 480p?
Anyway here is 1:1
Aspect:
and full:
Cheers :D
EDIT: Have discovered that overscan was switched on in all these photos, page 193 has an overscan off picture :)
OK here is a full screen shot of the monitor with the overscan option :)
I have a game cube somewhere with a component output, that should give me 480p I think. Give me a moment to dig it up from wherever it is hiding in my room :p
Cheers :D
I can confirm the Benq can deal with 1080p 50hz signals without any issues at all. My PS3 upscales DVD's to 1080p @ 50hz and they look great!
Cheers :D
The Benq works great with the latest July firmware installed :)
HDMI to HDMI cable used, set to 1:1 with overscan off:

Cheers :D
EDIT: I should add that D-Sub and DVI also work great at 1080p 1:1
Well I have had my FP241W monitor collected and replaced by Benq.
The first monitor they gave me via a direct replacement service, had no overscan on/off options, and the DVI connection would not work, so not a great start there :p
After another email exchange, they agreed to swap over my...
