Seagate SAS in SM JBOD - lots of read errors (anyone else?)

Try playing with the -d flags for smartmontools, maybe you can force it into SAT mode, or try forcing an ATA command (hoping the JBOD has passthrough of those), that may net you more information.

    Staggered spin-up : M1015 / LSI 9201-16i

It also depends on if you're powering your disks from a backplane or not. All standard SATA power connectors (from your PSU) will ground pin 11. This will more or less make sure they DON'T stagger. Most backplanes will leave Pin 11 floating or high, which will indicate to the drive that it...

Supermicro backplane and mysterious HDD activity leds

There are a lot of "vendor specific" comments in the SATA specification with regards to activity lights and staggered spin-up. If I'm reading it correctly it can either support staggered spin-up OR activity indication, however that doesn't make much sense and I doubt anyone follows that...

Supermicro backplane and mysterious HDD activity leds

They mean Pin 11 on the SATA POWER connector, not the DATA connector. Pin 11 is an interesting pin. It is commonly used to manage staggered spin-up of drives in backplanes. (Not all though, some drives support it by commands only, and some don't support it at all). If pin 11 is high or...

IBM M1015 in IT Mode - Drive spin down

Ah, I just realized that its an LSI 9220-8i flashed to IT firmware, although it should effectively be an IBM m1015? Maybe there are minor differences? It is also attached to an HP port expander. mpslsi0: <LSI SAS2008> port 0x6000-0x60ff mem 0xd2600000-0xd2603fff,0xd2640000-0xd267ffff irq 16 at...

IBM M1015 in IT Mode - Drive spin down

I run FreeBSD and use this script i found somewhere as a daemon: http://pastebin.com/AwAiTK2P It basically forces a spindown using camcontrol after X minutes. Works for me, but I had to make sure any "status reporting" script that uses smartctl uses the "-n standby" flag in order not to wake...

Sure, doesn't matter to me - end result is the same, no file for me :) Found it somewhere else, consider this closed.

    IBM M1015, sas2flash.efi.. anyone got it? :)

Hi Trying to flash my IBM M1015.. unfortunately my motherboard requires me to use the EFI version of the flash utility. Tried to download it from LSI... zip file downloads fine, but the efi flash utility is replaced by a text file saying this: FILE QUARANTINED Microsoft Forefront...

*Official* Norco data storage products thread

I got a CTM-1042SAS (4x 2.5" in a 5.25" slot) and stuck it to the left side and bottom of the case (inside) next to my mobo, with doublesided tape. Its not going anywhere. Mounted it 2cm from the rear end of the case so I can still plug in the SATA cables and I can access the hotswap trays...

ARECA Owner's Thread (SAS/SATA RAID Cards)

Have an ARC-1280ML... need some new drives, but unfortunately the Hitachi 5K3000's are out the question... they're either not available or twice as expensive as anything else here in Sweden. Usage is media storage and RAID-5 or RAID-6. Have these choices: WD Caviar Green 2TB - WD20EARX Seagate...

    Powersupply with decent 5v rail?

That could work... the AC connection is a bit dangerous though.. totally exposed screws :( The other external thing only has 2A on 5v and 12v (either combined or separate, don't know), which isn't enough..

    Powersupply with decent 5v rail?

Yeah, I have them on 1.2 sec staggered spinup. But as I said, "full load" power usage isnt specified in the HD datasheets, and the server has blown 3 PSU's so far due to them running very close or above max capacity :) As for the external things... anyone have a specification on them? Need...

    Powersupply with decent 5v rail?

Holy crap, those server PSU's are expensive :D The external 12v/5v thing looks like it'd work.. just have to find it somewhere around Europe, at least I know that they exist now (never seen one here), thanks for the help =)

    Powersupply with decent 5v rail?

Yeah... so I've noticed. Limited space in the case (Norco 4224).. so no room for second PSU unless i attach it to the outside of the case, lol. External 5v source? Would that be safe? What about dedicated server PSUs? Any recommendations there? Although they sound like banshees from hell...

    Powersupply with decent 5v rail?

Looking for a powersupply for my file server, should be able to support ~30 HDD's. Whats up with all the powersupplies these days having absolute crap 5v rails? Seasonics 1KW PSU has 25A on the 5v rail.. Corsair aren't much better at 30 A and the list goes on... A new 2tb HDD draws 1.2A on...

Socket 1155 MB with IPMI that takes a core i7 with new AES instrution set?

Hmm.. maybe you're right. I'll go for the E3-1230 I think, since it has hyperthreading and appears to be blazing fast.

Socket 1155 MB with IPMI that takes a core i7 with new AES instrution set?

As the topic heading says. I'm trying to find a reasonably priced server MB with IPMI that takes one of the new (cheap) core i7 CPU's using socket 1155, that has the new AES instruction set. I've found the SuperMicro X9SCA-F ... but it says it only supports up to i3, and I don't understand...

25GB in 70 seconds... with USB 3.0? Definitely...

Source is no problem, just about any raid5 array with 6+ disks on a decent controller will do 400mb/sec sequential read without any trouble at all.

Same... Activity LED's need a magnifying glass to be seen. Its the model with 5 backplanes, SAS connectors (so 20 connectors in total, not 40). Bloody annoying.

Building 2x quadcore xeon, need help

Building 2x quadcore xeon, need help

So its cheaper because its a newer part, with a more efficient manufacturing process... Do you think I'll notice any improvement going from Q6600 to 2x E5410 when it comes to compiling and such? Whats the noise level of your average stock Xeon HSF? I've noticed that there are exactly 0...

Building 2x quadcore xeon, need help

Hello Thinking about building a 2x quad core xeon system, but I am a bit confused about the different xeon models... The server is primarily going to be used as a file server (ARC-1280ML + ARC-1220) and while developing .NET applications (VS2008, MS SQL Server). This is the current list...

    Project: Galaxy 4.75

Yeah, I know its coming off the SATA cable, which is why I was confused. I double checked... in a totally dark room I could barely make them out, and that was with 10 disks working constantly. Those are some really really shitty LED's. Bit weird, since the green ones are fine. I wish mine...

    SFF8087 extension cord?

Nah, I am in love with hardware raid 5 & 6. I'll either use a Dremel, buy longer internal cables or sell case #2 and buy higher density hdd's. Thanks for all the suggestions though, good to learn about some higher end stuff, since I have exactly 0 exposure to it normally :(

    SFF8087 extension cord?

I'm not sure the ARC-1280ML would appreciate me doing that, it is a pure SATA card, isn't it?
  36. F

    SFF8087 extension cord?

Yes and no, I'm not convinced it'd work. If I understood this correctly, I'd need 3 of those in the server, then I'd need 6 horribly expensive cables, and then I'd need 3 more brackets that are device based, not host based like that one, and then a bunch of sata cables..

    SFF8087 extension cord?

Those seem like a better idea... The one with 2 connectors, it says host end, do I need to worry about that or do I just buy like... 6 of them and slap 3 in the actual server and 3 in the extra case?

    SFF8087 extension cord?

Okay, so for 20 drives I'd need. 2x 4-Port SFF-8088 to SFF-8087 Adapter 2x 1-Port SFF-8088 to SFF-8087 Adapter 5x SFF-8087 to SFF-8087 miniSAS cable from ARC-1280ML to BRACKET 5x External MiniSAS Cable SFF-8088 to SFF-8088 that go between BRACKET and BRACKET 5x of my existing ML cables...
