Your probably right as the Crosshair III kinda defeats the whole purpose of a budget friendly platform. I assembled an i7 platform on the Egg, and it competes favorably in price to my most expensive system listed in the OP.
i7 920: $280
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R $190
6 GB of G-SKILL DDR3 1600...
It's a great board for the money, but the Crosshair III seems to be worth the cost for two reasons:
1. The Crossfire thing that you pointed out.
2. Build quality. For someone like me who only upgrades every 3 years or so the build quality of the board means more than a cheap price...
My current board is an Intel 975xbx. Can't do the quad's; at least not that I am aware.
An AM3 setup might be worth it. As for the Core i5 most of the pre-release speculation says it is within a stone's throw of the Core i7's performance. Personally I think Intel chipsets are the best route for...
I think I am about ready to replace my aging C2D E6700 and Intel mobo with a new platform. As I do not want to break the bank, I am planning on an AM3 socket build. So far, I have come up with three builds, each one progressively more expensive than the former, however, I did not want to get...
It does. You should go to the ASUS website, and take a look at the Qualified Vendors List. Here is the link to their product page:

I have been doing a bunch of research on this subject, and I think I have decided on the ASUS Crosshair III; only downside I can see is that it only has two PCIE 2.0 x16 slots and it's the most expensive board, but I have read no negative reviews and no major negative comments. Oh, and it...
Not trying to be an arse, guys, and I do appreciate the advice. I just don't want to screw up hundreds of dollars worth of components; if you say I am making a big deal out of nothing, then I defer to your experience.
Yes, I saw that. My question to people like you, who know much more about building computers than me, is which book/guide/site was best. Having so many options is just as useless as having too few if you don't know what you are doing.
Neither is trig, but I sucked at that :)
My main concern is plugging all the wires back in their correct sockets, and hooking up the water cooler to the mobo.
Thanks. That is what I was looking for. As for the PSU, it was a free upgrade after my first one failed. Velocity Micro really took care of me; got that PSU, a 4870 512MB, and an upgraded water cooling unit for a little over $100.
However, now I want to try to do this on my own as my...
I have always had my computers built for me. The hardest thing I have ever put in a computer myself was a graphics card and memory:o
I now want to upgrade my platform. Currently, I have an Intel E6700 Core 2 Duo CPU, Intel X975XBX mobo, and 2 GB of Corsair DDR2 memory (still use XP)...
For you, it worked; for me, it didn't. Not trying to be melodramatic, but it's just good business to provide your customers up front with the adapters needed to get the card running out of the box.
All of this is more of an irritant (the equivalent of a mosquito bite), and it hardly means...
Well, I manufacture goods for a living, and I can tell you that if I didn't include the necessary hardware to get a product I manufacture and sell working right out of the box I wouldn't be in business long; nor should I be. My God, in this economic climate you can't afford to treat customers...
It's nuts. I could understand if this was an older product that had a change to it's specs, but a brand new product? Unfortunately for me, I do not have a local store that carries such an adapter (CompUSA is a joke), and will have to wait until next week until I get one from the Egg.
Got my new Sapphire HD4890 2GB yesterday, and low and behold, the thing has a 6 pin and an 8 pin input, but no adapter. I knew I should have ordered an adapter (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812200420). I wish to hell these companies would include the necessary...
Thanks for the info.
Just ordered a Sapphire 4980 2GB that just showed up on Newegg. Upgrading from a 4870 512MB reference card. I game at 1900x1200 and play primarily RPG's and FPS so I am expecting a decent performance bump. Next up will be a new mobo and cpu next year.
I altered the xml file per instructions, but did not notice any change in fan speed after reloading the edited profile. Any reasons you guys can think?
As I stated previously, I am getting a 4870 free of charge from VM. As for the 1200w being overkill, of course it is. However, I wasn't so sure my 600w PSU would be enough. I have ton of peripherals attached to the computer, so better safe than sorry. I'm pretty sure it's a quality unit; VM...
Got off the phone with VM yesterday, and here is what they are going to do:
My cooling system leaked all over the case so they are replacing the mobo, and upgrading the cooling system to their latest offering. GPU will go from X1950 Crossfire to HD4870 at no cost. I am upgrading the PSU to...
While I know I can use the new ATI cards with my 975X mobo, how much of a difference in performance will that make?
Just trying to get an idea as to whether or not to upgrade, or not.
Current System:
E6700 at 2.97Ghz
2 GB RAM
X1950 Crossfire
150GB Raptor HDD
Enermax 600W PSU...
That was my thought, as well. I think I will wait to see where the price of 4870x2 falls in relation to the 4870. However, I am sliightly concerned about the power requirements of the 4870x2 which could make a better PSU necessary.
No, but I'd rather not use VGA; I don't think I even have cable lying around anymore. If you strong feeling that's the issue I will go purchase one, though.
A week ago I booted up my computer, and my wallpaper had a greenish-tint to it. Black and grey were now displayed as a camo-green. Then, after loading a webpage, the problem persisited. Even now, as I type this, parts of the web-page that are supposed to be black are camo-green. I downloaded...
It took downloading the 6.10 beta, but I finally got Company of Heroes running, and it is awesome. FPS is very hard to gauge in a game like this, but I'm getting about 20-30 on average.
Call of Duty 2, however, is just downright sick. With everything cranked to the max I am averaging...
What's funny, or not so funny, is that I just bought a 1500va APC unit, and you would think that would be enough; my, how we push our systems today. ;)
Jim
:D My APC UPS overloaded and shut down. As soon as the PC and monitor were moved off, and on to a surge protector the system ran fine. Note for future reference:
Do not put everything on one UPS. ;)

Finally got through this morning after not being able to access tech support all weekend. I have no idea why, and after explaining the situation to the tech, Peter, he couldn't explain why either as he was on-call this weekend and should have received my call.
But all is well now. Pete...
Well, this didn't take me long...
I was playing around trying to get my z-5500 speakers to work with the X-Fi card, and the computer locked up. I had to do a hard reboot, but Windows wouldn't come up. I'm not sure what happened. Could I have fried something when I was switching audio...
