    Acer aspire v3 build quality

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I've seen the Y50s. But for what I do, a nice ssd is a higher priority than a nice graphics card. So the Y50 with a 256gb and an 860m is about 100 dollars more than an acer with a 256gb ssd and an 850m (1279 vs 1149 at newegg to be precise). I don't game enough for...

    Acer aspire v3 build quality

I am considering two options for my next laptop. I am torn between a sager 6658 and an Acer Aspire V3-772G-7616. I am almost set on the Acer, but I was wondering if anyone here with recent experiences with it (especially the Aspire v3) can tell me about their build quality. My last experience...

Merging select pages from hundreds of word files

Hello, all I have a problem that I thought someone here might be able to help. I have about 3000 MS word documents, and I want to merge just the first page of each into a single word document. I've run across many ways of merging that many files together, but I've yet to find a way to merge...

high packet loss despite good signals

Looking at my test history on pingtest.net, I almost certain that it is caused by congestion. Up to about 10% packet loss between 6 and 10 pm, and generally between 0 and 3% between 12am and 3am. Now for the uphill battle in getting comcast to recognize this. Thanks, everyone.

high packet loss despite good signals

Thanks. I understand the effects of packet loss, but was just unsure if congestion would manifest itself that way. And I could go on a pages long rant about dealing with lower level techs regarding this issue. The best examples I can think of are of the one who pinged my modem with 1 packet...

high packet loss despite good signals

Would simple congestion explain these issues? More precisely, if the problem was congestion would I see something like this (good pings and speeds, but intermittent lag spikes/packet loss?)
  8. D

high packet loss despite good signals

Using pingplotter, the bulk of the packet loss happens between my house and comcast's server (the 1st hop outside my lan). Though it could indeed be congestion, since just now is one of the first times i've been able to test in the morning and the problem seems quite a bit better (but still far...

high packet loss despite good signals

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried 2 different cable modems on my end (one of them brand new), but I've requested that the next comcast tech that is scheduled to come here bring one of their own, so that I can try a 3rd one out in the improbable but possible case I have 2 bad modems.

high packet loss despite good signals

I have tried different computers connected directly to the 2 different modems I've used, and the issue is always the same. The packet loss happens in spikes every few seconds. That is, ping will be steady and low for 10-30 seconds, and then I will see a spike. As an example, here's what happens...

high packet loss despite good signals

I've been having issues with my internet connection. Severe lag spikes and packet loss that happen every few seconds. It is the type of stuff that is unnoticeable if just browsing the web, but very noticeable when playing games and streaming videos. Here's a few representative pingtests...

I think this puts what I trying to say more succinctly than I did. I think that in terms of leveling and end game mechanics swtor is ahead of wow. And I say this as someone who fully admits that he will probably play wow longer. And the reason is a lot of what you said. Swtor misses some of...

Official [H] Star Wars:The Old Republic Thread

Wow may have more "skin" variety in end game. Different bosses, etc. But they are all, for the vast majority of cases, tank and spank until you get into some of the really heroic raids. In normal mode, all the different mechanics are made obsolete by the fact that people just so vastly outgear...

Official [H] Star Wars:The Old Republic Thread

Yeah, if you haven't done them you can't really speak to variety. Because I have done both in the past month. There is no way that WoW has more variety at end game. Normal mode in wow is just aoe/tank and spank/mow things down, and things become slightly more complicated at heroic. SWTOR even...

Official [H] Star Wars:The Old Republic Thread

People always come back to WoW because they have a lot invested in it. Not because of gameplay itself. Graphics-wise and raid-encounter wise, SWTOR is a much better game. I had more fun and it was more challenging doing Denova on normal than any of WoW's heroics. I also had a lot more fun...

I am pretty sure that if they haven't already, they will have made back the initial costs pretty soon. This is not the cashcow wow is, but it is far from a flop.

Thinking of trying an MMO for the first time...

I think MMOs are a niche genre that will soon return to being a niche. Wow was a huge crossover hit that only happened because of a very specific moment in time (cable internet taking over dial up, other mmos dying, in between gens in console gaming, lull in pc gaming offers). People just keep...

    Swtor: Where are they now?

I barely log on anymore, waiting for 1.2 But I have to say that: 1- it is definitely worth a playthrough. You def. get your money's worth by leveling up to 50 in the free month. 2- The main problem the game has is one of dying and mismanaged server populations. They released too many servers...

While the nerf is significant, I actually agree with them that healers (and survivability in general) scaled too much with gear. As new 50s doing hardmode content maybe not. But as t2, t3 geared 50s, it definitely was. Part of it was how people can get ridiculous amounts of endurance (some...

in terms of healing, I'd say: Sorcerer is best AOE healer Merc is best tank healer Op is between the two, with more HoTs For DPS, most of the encounters currently in the game heavily favor ranged over melee For tanking, I think powertech has some advantages in AOE tanking by starting with...

let me rephrase that: it is their fault, but I think that the mistake was done because they listened to the player base on issues they shouldn't. I wouldn't be surprised if they did focus groups and the like before implementing end game and built it based on that. The bulk of MMO players have...

SWTOR has easily been the most fun MMO I've ever played with regards to leveling up. End game is a different matter. Quest hubs are streamlined (get all the quests in a hub, clear them all, turn them in and clear the hub, unlike others where you'd walk to and from the same quest hub several...

I've found that at better gear levels this game is actually pretty well balanced. As a new 50, the burst capacity of mercenaries/commandoes and operatives/scoundrels may seem completely out of line. Just like the CC capacity of sorcerers. After all, if you have 11k health, getting hit for 5 is...

Yes, gear makes a great deal of difference. As for people talking about downing battlemaster/champions and stuff like that, I think people frequently don't get the point of warzones. I frequently see new 50s bragging about top damage, or about killing someone. All without paying any attention...

The weird thing is that while progression is artificially delayed in pvp, in pve they put none of the traditional obstacles to progression. Raiding three weeks and my guild cleared both ops in hardmode.

I think that in terms of content, swtor has "suffered" because it didn't follow suit of other more gear grinding games. The content seems to be too little at this point because it is too accessible. I've completed both operations in hardmode easily. But they could have gotten a lot more...

I can't remember any other theme park style mmo that had substantially more content at release. There are 3 ways of dealing with people like you and me, who play at least somewhat hardcore: 1- RNG - which has its problems and is what SWTOR does with pvp gear 2- Random blocks, like wow with AQ40...

While the orbital station is a bit cumbersome, it is at least much, much shorter. After the first or second time, I'd simply walk away and watch tv or something for 10 minutes. So one or two playthroughs? that is likely some 50-60 hours, at least. sounds like a good deal for 60 bucks.

How often did you sit through the 10 minutes worth of flying? Not to mention it was even longer if you wanted to go north-south and missed the zeppelin. And I am not defending anything. It is just a fact. Most of the content is not quality story telling? Sure. But it is also quite undeniable...

Filler is the bread and butter of MMOs. No other way to keep people who play 20-40 hours a week busy. It is just the nature of the game. Sure, the orbital station stuff is annoying. But no more annoying than the nearly 10 minute flight between undercity and the badlands, or EQs travel times.

I rolled empire for a simple reason: I knew I would be leveling solo and bounty hunter is the only class that gets a healing companion from the start. It made leveling a breeze. Meanwhile, on my jedi knight and my scoundrel it has been a pain because I have to self heal after every pull.
