    Building a silent box

I think Skillz suggestion is bang on, I've done some builds with Fractal cases and can confirm they are *incredibly* quiet to the point of being inaudible. A little note (not to take away from Skillz's suggestion), I am in a similar boat but in my case the wife doesn't want to see -or- hear...

    My BOINC Farm (pics)

Some background: My wife is hesitantly supportive of my DC hobby. Basically, I'm allowed to pursue DC as long as the following criteria are met: She doesn't have to see a room full extra computers (out of sight) She doesn't have to hear any extra noise (fans humming, etc.) I chip in extra...

Gauging interest for motherboard trays for benchers

How high do you figure these things can be stacked when fully loaded with CPU only setup, say 2p Xeon or Opteron setup (I'm thinking about Rosetta@Home [CPU based boinc project] crunching cluster)? Any idea how stable these things would be if they were stacked say 6 to 8 units high?

    Rosetta@home

Looks like the issues have been resolved, if you can call it an issue - what actually appears to have happened is a huge swath of new users joined the project due to it now being bundled with a new DC platform and it caused a big logjam as their servers were pushed beyond their concurrent...

Come over to BOINC, there are lots of awesome projects to choose from. Rosetta@home is still in the protein space but from a very different angle and they've recently made some very interesting headway in their research. They also keep a very active thread on their main forums where they keep...

    What's the big deal?

Hello All, It's been a long time since I've posted in here (years, I believe). I haven't really participated in F@H much recently either (though I've done and am doing a bunch of BOINC stuff). I have recently been browsing these forums and have stumbled across a few people eluding to 'PG...

    Doctors Using Brain Surgery Simulator

Not to get political about this, but as a Canadian watching all the debates in the US about universal health care, I have to tell you this is a prime example of why I'm so proud to be Canadian and how great our health care system is. As a previous poster said, this surgery was FREE! Also, a...

Digital Cameras That Do Thinking for You

Is this really new in the US Kyle? I've been in Japan for a while, so I'm always kind of taken back when I read something like this as "news". We've had cameras that do this here for about a year now. Though the one I have is a Casio, not a Sony... You put it into "best shot" mode and you...

Hands On With The 9” ASUS Eee PC

Is this supposed to be news? I have been using one of these for a few months now. Then again I live in Japan so maybe we got them early here - surprise surprise. Anyways, you will be happy to know you can get them in both XP and Vista flavores here so hopefully you will still have that option...

Please post youre opinions about amd/ATI.

I build computers for friends, family, colleagues, etc. In the past 3 years I have built 23 machines, maybe not too impressive compared to an OEM but for a one-man show doing it as a hobby (usually for no profit, just because I love to stick it to the OEM like Dell and HP - I used to work for...

I wish AMD would do this

Here's what I think AMD needs to do. 1) Oust Hector Ruiz 2) The other execs need to all take fat pay-cuts until the company becomes profitable, and that money should be re-directed to useful causes within the company.. (Paying off debt, R&D, Fab upgrade expenses, etc.).. I was going to...

    Comcast Admits Delaying Some Traffic

    1. How about investing in better infrastructure instead of paying some PR team 60K/year per head to come up with this BS. 2. We pay $42 a month for 10Mbit internet - this is the standard cable package from my ISP, there's also a pro package that costs $72 that gets you 16Mbit and a higher...

Stanford team finds blood test to help identify Alzheimer's disease

F@H's research is fundamental more than anything when it comes to the development of cures and the like. F@H looks to give a greater understanding of what is happening on the cellular and molecular level, so when researchers are looking at creating the miracle drugs we're hoping for, they have...

EC Grants $361M In Aid To AMD For Fab Upgrades

yay.. *sigh of relief* As much as some people might look down on this sort of hand-out, in the business world its pretty common.. and I dont like the thought of a monopoly in the x86 microprocessor market, we've already been there, and it brought us stagnation in technological advances. Yay...

I know someone wants this for their farm....

not to burst everyone's bubble, but would these things even support the SSE instruction set Stanford is using? (if they do, then awesome, but if they don't these things PPD could take a big plunge on some WU)

    New Era of Desktop Supercomputing?

    FTC Warns Against Network Neutrality

Wordwide broadband adoption: http://blogs.zdnet.com/ITFacts/?p=9265. The US is falling behind in adoption of broadband as it is already. {See above link} If the telecoms get their way, it's only going to get worse. Mind you, being that a lot of servers are based in the US, I can see any...

Any benches of the ATI 2900XT & GPU client?

Using what metrics? If you went with points-per-watt the entire benchmark would play to the mercy of how Stanford chooses to distribute points to the various clients, regardless of the amount of computation they produce. If you go by FLOPS (computational power), then the GPU takes the crown...

    ATI 2900

mhouston has stated it has potential for 2.2X performance compared to the X1950XTX at F@H.. but currently they have it running at 45% faster due to driver immaturaty, cpu overhead and some other factors but the hope to bring the performance up substantially.

Power useage reports - how many watts does FAH add?

You'll definately want to test different machines. The old P4 netburst chips were power-hogs and could double as a frying-pan cooking surface. Would be nice to get an array of Pentium D, A64 and C2D power usage results.

    WCG, R@H, or Something Else?

After reading up a bit.. I like the idea of WCG contributing to multiple medical research projects that all aim to further humanity's understanding of human biology and medicine. R@H seems like a worthy cause also, so I guess it comes down to personal preference... On a side note, older...

    help me to "re-fold"

first of all.. there's a pinhole sized reset button (most likely on the back or bottom) of your router. You'll first want to press that and hold it in for about 20 seconds.. That should reset everything. If that doesn't work, then try contacting your ISP.. and if they cant help you with the...

    X2-4200 folding slow,need help

two words.. drop vista. :o or, if you're gutsy, try installing vista on the other machine and see if the performance drops to a comparible level but I'd almost garuntee that is the problem vista seems to suck at folding (and pretty much everything else performance-related)

Theoretically possible, as stanford processes the WU's upto 3 times each for verification (sometimes a bad OC can return incorrect numbers).
