Performance wise, how do you think the 3rd gen X-25V would compare to the current Vertex2E ? Dunno whether its worth waiting for Intel's 80gig or just get the Vertex2E 60gig now...?
I've been waiting to buy my first ssd for a while now and the OCZ 60GB Vertex 2E just came down to £115 at my preferred e-tailer (ebuyer uk) which I was about to jump on, then I see this thread
Anybody like to proffer a guess for the cost of the 160GB at launch?
Cheers for the replies folks.
@maxburn
The simplest raid option in the software is Contiguous (part or whole of one disk) and as sub.mesa suggested I was contempleting making 4 simple raid groups for each disk connected, but my concern then was when the mobo dies would those disks be...
The mobo in my whs box has 8 sata ports, 4 standard and the other 4 using a software raid controller (Silicon Image Sil3114r5), which I'm now looking to make use of as i've maxed out the first 4. Finally installing the driver for these ports this is my forst foray into raid. Using the software...
Have to admit im a-retentive myself in my flash drive choices. Baffles me that designers still make flash drives these days where the hole for the keyring is on the cap.
Best drive I had was Kingston's mini data traveller. Looked like a peice lego and the cap attached very securely on the...
Try the Lights Out add-in.
- My WHS box turns on automatically when any of the machines on my lan are switched on (great considering its hidden away in a cupboard).
- When all clients on the lan are switched off/sleeping the WHS box hibernates itself after 10 minutes.
- Using a php script...
Nice bro. As a relative newcomer to 'home storage systems' WHS had all the features I wanted but duplication did seem to me a rather inefficient method of protection. I was aware some people used WHS with hardware raid setups but with the cost and complexity that's not something I could be...
Thanks, was hoping that was the case and they were just covering their backs.
Just to clarify to hook up one adapter i should have both the molexes on two separate lines right?
why not swap out the mobo to one with onboard graphics which would give you (presumably) one more vga and one more dvi.
or build a small media center again with onboard to stream the content off of your main machine (they can handle 1080p fine). admittedly costs a bit more but the benefits...
just bought a 4870 and didn't realise modern cards had two pcie power sockets. this card was to go in a SFF system that's using a EA380 which only has one pcie plug.
so in the box comes two pcie-molex adaptors which i was about to use but then reading the manual it says
So my question is...
So my 4870 finally came through and being out of the gaming loop I didn't realise modern cards needed two PCIe power connectors
The EA380 I'm using has a single PCIe power plug, not two. So I'm guessing I should be good to have one wired direct and the other with a molex-pcie...
Length of time wouldn't have any significance. How much you wave the magnet around the drive, as close as possible in as many different directions would.
Watched the first couple of vids hmchk, good links, would have been good seeing that beforehand tbh. Plus that guy highlights something I came to realise half way through my transplant: swapping head assemblies may be easier/safer than swapping platters, especially in a multi platter drive. The...
Mission: Unsuccessful.
Before beginning, I plugged the dead drive into xp to see what happens and the answer was: nothing. The drive spins up but windows refused to acknowledge it. Proceeding with the surgery I changed the platters around without mishap and a very minimal amount of dust and...
TBF that's what they thought from the description I gave them: drive spins, BIOS hangs for a minute while detecting drives, carries on without recognising it etc.
I was wondering about the pcb. I think I'll do the platter first and rehouse it as quickly as possible. If it doesnt boot after...
Lesson severely learned bro. I was actually ready to build my WHS box around a year ago but I remember there wre issues with files edited 'on site' getting corrupted which put me off doing anything about it at the time. Still, no excuse for at least not getting a spare drive to copy off to.
Was...
Initial diagnosis over the phone was degraded media, and full recovery was likely in their opinion. It wasn't until they actually tested the drive that they re-diagnosed it as a faulty head, where even though the cost had near doubled they wouldn't commit themselves to a likelihood of success...
Lol, who said the fan would give me a dust free environment? It's an aide nothing more. Have a read on the linked guide or at least on google and you'll see it's not impossible.
I'm well aware my chances of success here are slim, but assuming it fails all I've lost is another old 80gig drive.
A couple of months back my four year old 80gig sata which housed the entirety of mp3 collection died. Of course, I didn't have a backup. For nigh on a year, sorting out a NAS/WHS box was on the to-do list but I never got round to it before it was too late which of course I regret now.
The 60...
My bad, seek time is what I meant to say and admittedly the negs are in the minority but if you look you'll find them. Of course when your playing any stream of content start to finish you won't notice any difference, but hearing of an OS slowing just to pull the icons off the drive when the...
I'm hoping not since I ordered the 1TB.
Lower heat emissions are a good point. I'll do some benching when it comes in, but if it suffers read speeds as bad as some sources say I may end up sticking to the blacks.
Hmm lets say for argument the difference between a green and non-green drive is 10watts.
By my calculation the difference on a machine running 24/7 for 30 days at a conservative 13pence/kWh would be 93 pence.
Considering the amount of times in one month I'd access many small files or just...
Cheers man. Had come across that page earlier but wasn't sure you could take that to mean there was no silicon present. I'll take your post as a yes though ;)
Thanks all for the replies.
Looking into the drives a bit more, I kinda wish I'd opted for greens when it came to the server. I'll go for the 1TB caviar green with this order and swap it with one of the 500GB caviar blacks I bought for the server.
Last question: would anybody like to...
The 939 board I've using for the past four years has been resurrected as a WHS box so I'm looking to build my next machine. With the server and backup in place housing all the drives and tuners, for this machine I'm aiming for a simple SFF build.
As a console guy I never gamed on my previous...
Cheers and good to hear. Some online calc's were quoting 550watts+ for this box.
On the subject I was in town today, and browsing Maplins (UK's radioshack) for their monthly offers I came across a Power Meter that measures wattage of the device connected. Besides testing my various gear to see...
Currently ordering parts to rehaul my machine into a WHS box and using online psu calc's is giving me really wide varied results. Psu will be on 24/7 and being cost efficient is top priority for me (my elec isn't cheap). Specs so far..

How ram hungry is WHS? On a budget right now planning to build a new desktop and rehaul my current tower into a WHS machine: using an MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum with 1 gig ram (2 x 512 in dual).
So I could get another 2 x 512's or go for 2 x 1gig sticks which would give us a total of 3gigs: worth...
thanks dhc. only game i play on the pc is minesweeper :). so u think i could go down a notch in either brand? wasnt sure what with the HD playback but thats duly noted.
the lan led's is an interesting point, i never noticed it flickering when the pc was off before but then i cant say for...
cheers for the reply.
i was kind of leaning towards 8600 cos of price/availabilty already so im glad you mentioned that. having read up a bit on the ati equivalents and the 3650 my heads exhausted, this is where i wish i knew more about chipsets/ddr2 or dd3/purevideo/udv and all that jazz...
while doing some decorating and flicking the ring-mains on and off at the circuit breaker, i think i fried my mobo - pc won't boot and the ethernet activity led on the mobo's onboard rj45 is constantly blinking despite the pc being off.
i took the 24pin psu plug, snapped off the end 4pins and...
Thanks for the reply frank, that diagram looks kinda straightforward. The only thing that detracts from this circuit is in the way the power supply would always be on. See in practical terms i was thinking the easiest way for me to do this mod, is use the stock psu to power the box itself and...
Hmm, cheers for the help guys - i'll explain my intentions as it might help with the solution. Im wondering if i explained correctly that i want the leds to stay at a constant brightness between switching the circuit on and off.
Im in the process of making a custom case for my xbox almost...
